OOC: Well, I have 1%, 5% when I'm in war. 2% isn't very realistic, but most nations have 2.5-5% all the time.. Sigh. Even with compulsory military service, you don't really need more than that 1%, I think. You can easily rise it if you go to war.

Than [i[you[/i] need to figure out who is made to enter survice, ie. males 18 to 25, and than how many there are in that catigory. Remember, a large # of personnel = less money for toys!
I would say your still looking at around 3 to 6% max. But, admitadly that is a guess/estimate.

I spend about 30-40% of my budget on military ... of course, I'm planning a bit of a conquest (mostly puppets at the moment ;))

My army is about 0.001% of my population.

OOC: Whoops, I change that.. Actually, a small nation could have huge numbers, maybe even 30%. But a nation with hundreds of millions couldn't afford that, nor need that. October 14th nation, compulsory military.. 10% wouldn't be unrealistic. But I'd guess 5% would be good. Lower it when you grow.

I have done a fairly accurate projection on my percentage. I tried to take into account compulsory service, age, % male population, fitness, and other factors (some of which are educated guesses based on my own perception of the population). The conclusion was that I can get 1.14% at any given time, including long service professionals, male conscripts (sort and long term), and female volunteers.

Also, don't confuse miltary service with budget spent on military. Most nations spend between 8-20% of their budget on the military but their numbers for actual percentage of population are relatively low... ie the 2% for large nations, higher for smaller. In case anyone cares to refute my comment on budget spent on military, the US spends roughly 17% of it's budget (NOT GDP) on its military.

3% in the military and $4 tril military budget :D

OOC: Keep in mind that your standing army is not the one you're stuck with forever. 1-2% is fine for peacetime. If you enter a war, -especially- a defensive war, you can draft much larger portions of your population into fighting. It's also worth keeping in mind that conscripted soldiers, at least in an offensive conflict, will be far less willing to fight on the whole.. so if you draft %5 to conquer Random Country A, expect your draftees to not perform as well. Defensive wars are different, as they inspire large amounts of patriotic fervor.
