The Alliance Between Men and Elves is now. Our time here...

...is just beginning. (To paraphrase a certain bitter old elf who looks like Bodyguard Barry)

"Well, that was certainly a good time." D'ron smiled at Lesley, "What do you say to a few orbits while we sleep, a brief stop in Menelmacar to sign the treaty, and then home again?"

"Why don't we just sleep on the ground? I'm sure the Empire won't mind."

"Probably not."

"Honor, clear it with the Imperial Government. We're staying here tonight."

"Of course, sir."

As day dawned anew over the South Atlantic, the Forbidden Honor lifted from the Nenyan International Airport. Time to visit the heart of elvendom on Earth.

Vinyatirion. Home of the Lady Sirithil, Lady Protector of Elvenkind.

Only a few seconds away...

The Honor shot upwards, towards the Noldorin Empire.

This is the Federation of Sentient Peoples Ship Forbidden Honor, requesting clearance to enter Menelmacari airspace. We have an appointment with the Elentári.

And just WHAT to do with the Fungi people?

Gahh!!

All too often, smaller minorities are too frequently overlooked. Meh!

Fine... fine... go on.

"Northmark Sentinel Array Command to FSPS Forbidden Honor. You are cleared to enter Menelmacari airspace. Proceed to Vinyatirion Gravport along [vector]. I am told the Lady is expecting you."

The Honor acknowledges the vector and clearance, and flows inward, slicing through the air.

She settled smoothly to the ground, gracefully, landing herself with none of the flair D'ron displayed while piloting.

Her ramp flickered outward, and out stepped D'ron and company. The were dressed as they had been the day before, but the clothes were perfectly presentable.

Lesley is on D'ron's arm, and Cortana follows first, the Jessica, reflecting the difference that lies in the two events. Yesterday and today.

Cortana stops abruptly at the base of the ramp, and Jessica bumps into her, not expecting the sudden stop.

A motorcade approaches... Mornahossë on jetbikes, leading and trailing a long, sleek black grav limo, with the House Fëanor crest emblazoned in crimson on its front-seat doors. Two small flags flutter from the hood of the vehicle, the left of FSP, the right of Menelmacar.

When the procession has stopped next to the aircraft, an Elf emerges from the vehicle. Tall he stands, hair black as raven feathers, gazing at the visitors with a piercing - and faintly glowing - sapphire gaze. He is arrayed in fine robes, and around his brow sits a golden circlet. "Welcome to Menelmacar," he says in an almost musical voice - it is easy to imagine it might be an absolutely incredible singing voice. "I apologize my mother could not be present to greet you." He offers a handshake to D'ron and the others. "I am Lord Maglor nos Fëanor, second and only remaining son to the Lady Sirithil, and apparently a Crown Prince as well." He smirks wryly. "Though just 'Maglor' will be fine."

D'ron firmly shakes Maglor's hand. "Of course it will, Your highness." He smirks very slightly as he says this, attempting to make the joke clear, and hopefully not insult the elf.

The other shake Maglor's hand as well, though Jessica seems to let go only relectantly. And at a quick glance from D'ron.

At Maglor's suggestion, they climb into the limo, finding it easily spacious enough for the five of them.

I hope we don't bump into anything, Cortana thought.

The motorcade moved off, leaving the gravport grounds and getting onto a freeway into the city. All around were beautiful buildings... low, sprawling structures in the Elven style with lines of tall, elegant fluted towers. In fact, these were heavy-industrial factories; it was the Menelmacari way that if anything was worth building, it was worth building beautifully. The towers were, in fact, the smokestacks, though no smoke could be seen billowing forth from their tops, for the stacks were packed with all manner of emissions-control devices to lower pollution to a near-negligible level. The fires of industry burn brightly in Menelmacar - though they do so in harmony with Arda.

Periodically their host would point out various landmarks, but generally he tried to keep a conversation going. "How was your trip from... EOTED, was it, that you visited last?" Maglor asked. "And what sort of arrangements with my mother did you have in mind?"

Ahead the road vanished into a tunnel bored into a mountainside; it looked for all the world like the procession was actually leaving the city, approaching a jagged and nearly impassable wall of mountains: the Pelóri, the Fenced Heights, the natural walls of Vinyatirion the Eternal.

"The trip from EOTED was quick, Lord Maglor." D'ron would be damned if he didn't use a title of some sort. "This country lies not far from the borders of that one, and I am sure you know something of traveling at speed, with the famous Menelmacari Gravfleets."

D'ron was somewhat at a loss. He had not realized any of the Lady Sirithil's children drew breath in the air of Arda. Someone in the IRDI needed to keep him better informed. He managed to keep his surprise in check by concentrating on the questions at hand.

"As for the arrangements, I believe that a formal alliance between the Empire and the Federation is long overdue, mostly due to my own nations quiessence. I have come to rectify that situation."

Jessica and Lesley stared in unabashed wonder out the windows of the limo. The Elven city seemed so different, yet startling familiar. It certainly was nothing like Griffin, where kilometer high towers were considered short. It was, on the other hand, much like the city of Nenya they had just left.

Cortana watched the city go by as well, mentally cataloguing it, tracing their route. Even without closing her eyes, she could watch their progress as ever watchful satellites swung about their orbits, following them. But as for why, she could not tell, but yet, something uneased her about this place.

Let's see. We have a population of 1180 million, about 12 million of which are elven. And about half of that twelve million are armed Islamic terrorists. They're primarily used in bad RP'ing, which end up ignored right from the start. But well, they're cool to have.

But then again, I suck at RP'ing to begin with. I learn well from Belem and Bisons.

The motorcade proceeded into the tunnel.

"An alliance," Maglor mused. "Yes, mother has often spoken in desire of such a pact. So I can be certain Menelmacar will agree to the idea in principle and overall purpose. All that needs be worked out is the details, yes?"

The tunnel went on for some ways, lit by light fixtures resembling globes of crystal, casting light on the roadway as spectrally close to true daylight as it is possible for the craft of any race to create.

"I would suppose so. I imagine no more than a simple agreement to mutual defense and free trade would be required, at least from our end of the bargain. What exactly you might desire from the agreement, though, I do not pretend to know." D'ron smiles. He was no Nenyan telepath.

Even Lesley could only sense strong emotions.

As they entered the consuming tunnel, D'ron blinked. The lights seemed to defeat the purpose of the tunnel, but then elves were supposed to not like it underground.

He on the other hand, didn't mind at all.

The other three passengers remained silent, eagerly awaiting the transition back to true daylight, and their first glimpse of Vinyatirion proper.

Jessica whispered to Cortana, having no experience driving at this speed, "How do you keep cars from bumping into each other at this speed?"

The lights of the tunnel flashed by, creating no shadow, except straight down.

Maglor nodded to D'ron. "I suspect our aims will be similar. Perhaps exchanging of intelligence as well. All in all it's likely to be a fairly stock alliance in terms of its, well, terms."

He then glanced at the women. "We're just that good, miladies," he said with a grin.

And with that, the car emerged into sunlight again. They were on a slope overlooking a vast bowl-shaped valley surrounded by mountains, though both the valley and the mountains on both sides were cleft in twain by straits of the sea, for the mighty capital straddled the straits between the two main Menelmacari isles. From mountain peaks all around, waterfalls from little mountain rivers streamed down.

Across the strait stood Daeriant, a great bridge of an ingenious cable-stay/suspension hybrid design, which allowed its spans to stretch across the nine mile expanse of the strait with but three towers (though these were in excess of 3000 feet high), uniting the two halves of the city; the longest and tallest bridge in the world.

To the north of the city reared the cliffs of Taniquetil, the great mountain. Ninety-four hundred meters tall, the mountain was the tallest in Menelmacar, and was home to Strategic Defense Command, built deep below and hewn directly from the living rock. The road on which the motorcade travelled curved immediately southwards to the left upon emerging, to descend sideways to the valley floor.

The city shone, with great towers spearing the heavens, some of which were over a mile tall. They glistened in all manner of pale colors, sky blue and mauve and sea-foam green and rose and peach and gold, in the light of the sun. They were built of glass and steel and stone and even precious metals (including gold and mithril), and seemed delicate, almost but not quite crystalline, postmodernistic extrapolations on the classic Elven 'Rivendell' and 'Lothlorien' styles.

The greatest of these was Fëanor Palace itself. The palace stood almost a mile and a half high, though only the topmost part of the complex was actually the palace. It was made up of several towers, much like the others around them, in that the sections below the palace proper were mixed-use commercial and residential space. The towers served also as support pylons for the palace, whose wings perched atop them, joined by bridges and skywalks and the like, with the occasional terrace practically overflowing with gardens.

At ground level the towers were interspersed with forests and waterways and parkland and public spaces; the buildings were set well apart from one another and carefully placed, to let sunlight reach ground level at all hours of the day. The city center was still very distant, though, at least fifteen or twenty miles from the nearest of the Pelóri that nonetheless surrounded it, so to see that area in any further detail was difficult. The local area could be seen, though... it was basically suburbs.

Oddly, though, few streets could be seen; there seemed only walkways joining the houses, all of which were built with classical or modern Elven architecture and were exquisitely designed and landscaped, carefully built around and into their surroundings rather than in spite of them. There were no cookiecutter homes here, either... all were unique in some way. Occasionally what could be termed shopping centers could be seen, though with no apparent parking lots; there were also towers filled with apartments or offices, far smaller than the ones downtown but similar in style.

After the descent, the road plunged into tunnels again, which probably explained the evident lack of streets or parking areas. "All the roads are underground," Maglor explained. "In a city of fifty million, surface land is precious; yet most human cities devote roughly a quarter of their land to transportation. Here, we relegate it underground, and whatever is not built on or privately owned is parkland, for the enjoyment of all. The road layout is a radial grid centered on the palace complex; the suburban areas do not have their own little streets, but common garages underneath them, linked to the main grid. Mass transit is provided by magic-based teleportation circles scattered around the city. Anyway, we'll be heading to the Palace for the negotiations, and then afterwards you can explore the city in greater detail if you like."

Cortana chuckled as Maglor answered the question before she did, somewhat grateful, as she knew how it was done in the Federation, but not here.

All of them were appropriately awed by the construction of the city, and as Lesley was about to ask about the lack of visible roadways in the city, Maglor spoke again.

D'ron blinked. 50 million? That's it?! Griffin, the capital of the Federation had 298 million people in it, and easily was on much less land. But the elven population in the cities is low. I've always wondered about that. Don't like the crowding I guess.

The primary difference was obvious. The tallest building, the Palace, was only of average height for a building in the Federation's capital. In fact, if he remembered correctly, the only building in the capital under 100 stories was his own residence, which was only three above ground and two below. Assuming negociations went smoothly, he planned to be back in the Federation, to sleep in his own bed tonight. It had been twelve days since he had set foot in the Federation. There would not be much time to explore the city.

But he could see the longing on Jessica's face. But there was no reason for her, or Lesley, for that matter, to attend the negociations. They were not part of the government. They could explore during the negociations.

He signalled this to Jessica with hand motions, in the Federation Battle Tongue, as it was sometimes refered to. He'd taught her when she was little.

She smiled in response, clearly pleased.

At this speed, it wouldn't be long to the Palace.

What do you mean? I've said for months that my capital city had 298 mio people in it.

*realizes that is the size of SeOOC, isn't it?*

I've historically had crowded cities, as the nation is relatively small.

So I've got to have high towers.
