The Australian Marsupials Government announced today that it had decided on a cost-effective way to assist the nation's flagging airlines, most of whom have suffered from declining ticket sales in the past two years.

"We believe that issuing Letters of Marque to our airlines will enable them to recoup a substantial percentage of their losses at virtually no expense to the Australian Marsupials taxpayer," said William Dampier, an AM government spokeman, yesterday afternoon. "This is, to my mind, a win-win situation."

Letters of marque are documents providing governmental authority to fit out an armed vessel and use it to attack, capture, and plunder enemy merchant vessels in time of war. They were used extensively by, amongst others, Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th and early 17th centuries, producing some notable privateers such as Sir Francis Drake. To date, they have only been used for sailing vessels, but government analysts see "no reason" why a Boeing jumbo jet wouldn't qualify as a suitable vessel.

"We’re very excited about this proposal," said Edward Teach, the newly appointed CEO of the embattled Australian Marsupials natioanl carrier, Bunyip Airlines. "The windows in a 747 already look like portholes; all we have to do is stick some cannons out of them, and we're ready to go." Logistics are still being worked out, but it is likely that passengers sitting in a gun row will have similar obligations and restrictions as those sitting in an exit row.

Traditionally, letters of marque provide authority to plunder ships from a specific nation. Mr. Dampier was somewhat vague about the target countries, saying only that "well, if you need a translator to talk to them, odds are they could be fair game."

Numerous countries have expressed deep concern over the plan, noting that letters of marque have not been valid under international law for several centuries. "Frankly, the last thing we need is for jumbo jets full of Australian Marsupials back-packers to be hoisting the Jolly Roger and firing broadsides at any Airbus that comes across their path," said an anonymous diplomat from the United Kingdom. "I mean, we had our fun and all with Drake; but let's not get carried away."

AM government officials stressed that the letters only provided for "opportunistic plundering" and that flight plans would not be changed to increase the odds of better prey. "However, if someone goes a little out of their way to get their hands on a Transworld Airline Alliance (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=76346) flight packed with gold bullion, well, that's their affair."

Human rights groups were outraged, but not surprised, at the developments. "It's really just a hop, skip and a jump away from allowing handguns in the cockpit," said Amnesty International spokesperson Brianna Wetblanket. "Hopefully passengers will get tired of sharing cabin space with giant smoking cannons and the delays caused by all this privateering."

To complete the signing ceremony, Bunyip Airlines brand-new 747 flew overhead and fired off a broadside at a passing KanangAir jet. "Yo ho ho," said Mr. Dampier.

Vichy International, a managing partner of FKC Airlines has announced that FKC Airlines has applied for protection status to the Alconian Navy and Alconian Law. Under these regulations any craft engaing in piracy will be treated under the 17th century Naval Acts which call for both the selling of craft captured under prize rules, and the harsh punishments of the law.

The navy has estimated that with current economic trends that they will have several used airliners for sale, and cheap dog food for sale within the next few months.

Naval Pilots are very happy with the news...."When I first decided I wanted to be a pilot, well I never thought I'd ever have the opportunity to become rich. I mean a 747 costs a few hundread million, and then I get what 1/2% of the value...so all I have to do is bag a few of them and I can buy a posh house in Thunder Bay." exlaimed one Alconian Pilot as she prepared to escort a FKC Air flight.

The Alconian government, long noted for it's anti-pirate stances. Such as the beheading of an 8 year-old who pirated 70,000 songs in three months. The Duke has announced a policy of capture or destruction of these new air-pirates by the navy. "We have invaded, crushed, and killed these vermin on the sea for hundreads of years. Now we shall do so in the sky..." in a recent address to the Captain's Guild.

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF BOA VISTA

The President of the Commonwealth has expressed his objection to Wombat News' decision to arm airliners. Airliners are strictly a civilian institution and any arming of the airliners shall be light and for defensive purposes. The arming of airliners for the purpose of piracy is strictly barbaric and of another century. In this time and age, a government has no reason to support piracy whatsoever.

As a way to lend a helping hand to the Incorporated States of Wombat News, the Commonwealth Government is willing to donate 20 million dollars in hopes of stablizing the airline industry there and avert any unhappy incident.

The President also warns that if the plans are put forward, and Wombat News-based airliners preys on any Boa Vista-based airliners, the Boa Vista airliner pilots will not hesitate to fire upon the Wombat News airliners. The Commonwealth does not want bloodshed, but if the lives of Boa Vista's citizens are threatened, the Commonwealth Government has given all Boa Vista airliner pilots the power to fire upon the aircraft.

Sincerely
Joao Ferreira

Just a couple of points:

Wombat News' decision to arm airliners

1. Wombat News reports the news - we don't make it. We reported, fairly clearly we think, about an Australian Marsupials government plan to issue letters of marque to airlines.

the Commonwealth Government is willing to donate 20 million dollars

2. Whilst we cannot, of course speak for Australian Marsupials (OOC: LOL), we are certain that the AM Government would be delighted to receive such assistance. It will make paying for the cannon so much easier ...

the Boa Vista airliner pilots will not hesitate to fire upon the Wombat News airliners

3. How exactly are they going to do this since:

The President of the Commonwealth has expressed his objection to Wombat News' decision to arm airliners. Airliners are strictly a civilian institution and any arming of the airliners shall be light and for defensive purposes

or is this simply another "one rule for us, another for everyone else"?

LOL,

FROM THE FOERIGN MINISTER OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF BOA VISTA

The Commonwealth Government apologizes to the Wombat News Government for this incident. The press release was incorrectly typed by the President's secretary and she was subsequently fired for her actions.

The Commonwealth Government still objects to the Australian Marsupials government plan to arm airliners for the reasons in the previous press release. Our airliners shall not be preyed upon by the Australian Marsupials government and if any AM airliners preys on Boa Vista airliners, they will be shot down. We arm our aircrafts for the simple purpose of defense and those weapons, under the Commonwealth Government provided control system, remains, inactive until a weapon (say, a missile) is detected to be heading towards the aircraft. In this scenario, the weapons will be activated and will fire automatically.
