The new Parliament of Hawking has officially declared the eighth of October a national holiday, following a significant economic reform from Communism to capitalism. Named 'Reformation Day,' it will be celebrated annually in recognition of this milestone in Hawking's history.
Members of Hawking's new Parliament, many of whom were decided upon with a snap election that took place within twenty-four hours of the reform, gathered today in the building that was once known as the Hawking Workers' Commune to discuss new legislation to improve Hawking's imploded economy.

The party which has held power in Hawking throughout the nation's existence, and which was also responsible for the initial introduction of Communism to Hawking several months ago, has undergone the second name change in its short history. Its name has been changed from the Communist Party of Hawking, to the Libertarian Socialist Party of Hawking (LSPH). It was originally known as the Labour Party of Hawking.
The LSPH has initiated some major legislative and national identity changes following the reform. The most noticeable change to outsiders is Hawking's new flag, which now features a large red star (representing socialism, unity and life) set against a dark blue background (representing calm and serenity). Hawking's capital city is also now known as 'Mandela,' commemorating the great left-wing politician and human rights advocate of the same name.

Hawking has a new national motto, "Tolerance and mercy." This motto is thought to sum up the political feelings of most of the citizenry of Hawking, having been approved as the new motto by a landslide vote. It also details the governing party's core stance.
A new anthem has been introduced to replace "The Internationale." The provisionally and simply named "Hawking National Anthem" uses the tune of the Singaporean national anthem "Majulah Singapura" and will soon have lyrics written for it. The popular song "What A Wonderful World" is to be Hawking's secondary anthem, the equivalent to Australia's "Waltzing Matilda."

The most significant change for Hawkingers was of course the new national currency. Whereas under Communism there was virtually no use for currency, the new age of fairly regulated capitalism that beckons requires an official means of trade.
This has been provided to the people in the form of the Hawking mark. To avoid severe inflation, few notes and coins have been created and none have yet been released into circulation. This is because that although Hawking has converted to capitalism (and been renamed 'The Republic of Hawking' to fully emphasise the fact), growth of the nation's economy is still hampered by a one-hundred percent income tax rate. Despite this, the majority of Hawkingers are pleased to be moving into a new age of prosperity and were out celebrating in the streets today following the completion of the working day.

The LSPH plans to wean the people off the government teat to a certain extent by very slowly decreasing public spending by the State and allowing for an increase in private spending. This precaution is one that must be taken, because it is known that Hawkingers are now so dependent on public spending that too sudden a drop in it could result in the nation collapsing into anarchy. Some tax cuts have already been initiated, although these have had little effect so far.
Hawking's education, healthcare, police and transport systems will remain under government control as the LSPH does not trust the emerging private sector to handle these crucial components of the nation to the best effect. The railways are to be electrified and upgraded to be able to carry larger tonnages of goods and passengers, and the steam locomotive which used to haul the Communist government's train ('Proletarian,' pictured below) will be set aside to run tourist trains through the coastal rainforest area on the Tanczos Peninsula, which protrudes from Hawking's North Coast.

A massive firework display will take place over the capital Mandela tonight, along with a fly-past from No. 20 Squadron of the Hawking Air Force in their Sukhoi Su-27 fighters, marking a new beginning for the Republic of Hawking.
