Troy announces development of new infantry weapon

The Trojan Empire

The Trojan Military Development Department has announced the implentation of its new hand-to-hand issued weapon, the XS-3000 Red Lightsaber. The lightsaber will replace the standard and horridly outdated steel sword used by Trojan infantry units.

The XS-3000 is an excellent weapon for close-combat, and contrary to public belief, cannot parry or deflect bullets or plasma blasts easily.

When deactivated, a lightsaber appears as a polished metallic handle, about 30 centimeters long, lined with control studs. At the press of a button the energy contained within is liberated and forms as a shaft of pure energy about a meter long. The saber hums and scintillates with a distinct sound. Its shimmering blade is capable of cutting through almost anything, save for the blade of another lightsaber.

We expect a full conversion to the XS-3000 in about eight to nine years, including three years of training. commented Lucius Marcus, head of the TMDD.

More news later.

RL physics aside, I question the tactical value of such a thing. If you live in a world of ranged weapons, how often do you get to use this, and how much time/money can you devote to this?

OOC: We're Trojans. We like to cut people up, charge the battlefields, swords, etc. You get the point.

OOC: Firearms render your personal preferences irrelevant. And remember, Troy lost...

Although light sabres may not appear to be very efficient on todays battlefields I just bet they would be very effective against wooden horses? :? wouldnt they?

I would be most interested in such a development in personal lighting, since our current weapons, made from the finest unobtainum, cannot realistically illuminate our warriors in a cool and dramatic style.

Now Hektor, don't go rolling your eyes. That's the most sensible comment I've read yet....

Seriously tho, it's a zero-sum world out there. Every dollar and training hour spent on what is essentially a sword is one less available for weapons that will actually effect the battlefield. The armed forces of today teach only the most rudimentary HTH combat because they need to put that time/money into other things.

I admit they look cool, but swords and guns don't mix. If you want to have these things, issue them to the Royal Guard or whatever you call it. They would actually get close enough to use them.

That's actually a good idea. :P Although, it's still climematic and cool to have thousands of soldiers charging, with sniper cover, and then smashing into the enemy for a crushing battle. :D

You must begin to think outside the box young padawan, and eventualy entirly without it.

these swords may (not) be effective in battle, but does that matter? What about torture? What about cutting open tanks and fortifications? how do you place a barrier that when they will come through just as fast anyhow?

i would like in on this.

Torture is not a method of interrogation, it's cheap entertainment for people without cable TV. Fortifications, have been useless since the development of modern firearms, so developing yet another entry device sounds like a waste. And tanks? You'll never get within 1000m.

Have you never heard of any enemy machine gun fire never mind mortars arial attack rocket launchers etc. Any army foolish enough to try attacking in their thousand like you suggest would be simply blown away!
Get real please
