Explaining IC reasoning OOCly

This is not a knock at anyone, I'm just trying to understand what's going on here, and why. Though I will rant and rave in a little bit, I enjoy Roleplaying with most of you, and everything I bitch about is all in fun.

I'm not understanding the ooc explanations. This seems to be a political RP more than a War. All of these little 'OOC: Yut wouldn't help' OOC Arda would never...' Fuck that. That's the point of politicking, is to make someone think you have more cards than you do.

Explaining it ooc defeats the purpose of writing, or more importantly reading a Story, which is to make it an interesting read. By going ooc, I already know what you're going to do, so I can just skip the rest of your posts. If you had kept it IC and played it off with a bit of mystery, attention could be kept. *shrugs* Just confuses me.

If everyone relied less on OOC explanations and more on quality, in-depth Roleplaying and storytelling, OOC information abuse would be cut down tremendously.

Now what could have been a good political scenario, with people making thier assumtions about what will happen, has been tainted. Tainted because now they know the deal. Instead of wondering about what the evil alliances will do, you already know. Let people draw thier own conclusions, lead them to believe one thing and then when the time is right, spring your trap and do something unexpected. THAT is good storytelling. Who would read a book that instead of putting in some details and writing well, the author just said, {{{"OOC: Okay, this isn't really true. It's only propaganda from the EVIL EMPIRE OF FUCKING DOOM. Don't worry, they would never support the Good Empire of Shit and Biscuits, even though the Semi-Evil Empire of Wretched Fucks said they might."}}}

That's stupid, and instead of reading the book, and drawing my own, possibly wrong conclusions, I already know what to expect and might throw the book in the fire(or find another thread to read). It pisses me off. Alot. We're here to tell stories, and play a role, not write a boring-ass, 3 sentence, out of character summary, that just screams DONT READ THE REST OF THE THREAD. THERE IT IS.

Word.

Hear, hear. The VC/Martian War might've been a really good RP, except that 'certain people' kept saying things like "oh, don't bother to have your diplomat try to convince my diplomat of anything, 'cuz it won't work", or tried to explain what they [i]meant[/]i to say OOC. Of course, OOC explanations are useless IC, and no one could rightfully follow that advice anyway, since it would be metagaming. Thus, everything got screwed over and nothing interesting happened. Bleh.

OOC:

Pantera, well done. When I'm in character (IC) I not only try very hard not to use any OOC knowledge but act according to how my people see things - which may not always be how I the player act.

As well, I view OOC only as a way to minimize any miscommunication - not as device to give away the whole plot.

I also use OOC when speaking as the player of Vrak, because there are 'tards out there who can't tell the difference between OOC and IC.

Yeah, one can go overboard with OOC explanations for everything. But OOC communication is good to do.

In the Resi War I kept my betrayal an OOC secret, figuring people would take advantage of OOC knowledge. And the war just kinda exploded prematurely like a popped balloon full of... something nasty.

Its hard, but key, to find the right balance. Say what needs to be said, so that the RP doesn't go to hell, but don't say so much that the RP becomes just a redundant addition to what you say OOCly.

In the Melkor-Ackaxal II incident, I dropped a few OOC hints that spiraled the whole thing into a giant crapfest of bad RPing.

My point is: Go OOC only if you want to talk about things not directly pertaining to the thread, like "You have a telegram" or "Let's get on AIM". Don't say things like "I wouldn't do that if I were you" or "You're such an idiot, can't you see he's trying to kill you?", they're the NS equivilent of yelling at a movie screen. You give away the plot to people who would much rather derrive it from elegant flowing text than someone standing up and yelling crude one-liners.

OOC:

Whilst I am ICly angling for a war, I OOCly wholly support Pantera in this - and apologise for the brief OOC rant in which I got trapped by Scandivian States. I actually thought Kalessin's efforts were pretty good, and made sense. The massive OOC return barrage against them shows a lack of ... well ... ability to differentiate IC and OOC.

Plus I was really starting to enjoy the actual word battle between AMF and EOTED, once it settled into IC.

OOC: I thank you for this, I almost explained myself OOC to some one a second ago, and then realized that it would ruin my suprise tactic

Ah! I'm glad you took the time to say this, Pantera. I never explain anything OOCly. If they can't figure out what's going on from my or my character's actions, then they'll just be surprised when I pull my aces out of sleeve, and if so, well, tough for them.

Very, very nice, Pantera.

And I just realised I'm against you in the Resi war.

And that you have my Prince's sister inside one of your allies.

Should have thought that through.

Hah! I tried doing IC stuff like telling lies...guess what...I got accused of being a GODMODer. So I put all thbe outrageous lies as messages from the 'Ministry of Misinformation'. The next time I made a wild claim I was accused of being a GODMODer again. I complained about this and was told I should indicate I was lying by doing false statements like this;
Dyelli Beybi would like to announce it has entirely conquered the Nation of XYZ, the people are throwing flowers at the feets of the beloved liberaters
I've since taken to OOCly pointing out to people that I'm telling a lie just to avoid everyone jumping on me and calling me a GODMODer.

Guess it doesn't help the fact that my posts are almost as long OOC than IC.

The problem with this is that anyone with decent technology could easily see that you had not conquered the nation of XYZ. It's kinda like the Sahif guy from Iraq. We all knew they were getting thier shit rocked, the rest of the world knew it, but there it is. If they go OOC to call you down, tell them to eat shit and deal with it In Character.

In a situation like this, I would continue to make my claims, getting more outrageous with each one. If people kept resorting to OOC, I would politely ask them to get out of my thread because they aren't contributing.

Your idea of going ooc to clarify that it's just propaganda is all well and good, but once more it just ruins what could be a fantastic scenario. Instead of the other nation going out of its way to prove to the world that you're full of shit and have NOT conquered XYZ, he squeels 'Godmodder' and ruins the scene. Shitty, and I hate it. Alot.
