The Awakening:
“Coordinate reflector modules for sectors T4, T5 and T8” Announced proffessor Matthias through the microphone.
“Sectors T4, T5 and T8 coordinated for reflection, sire” Informed back one of the technicians, upon checking one of the holomonitors.
Cleaning sweat from his forehead with his white napkin, the proffesor continued “Comence multichecking procedure for all sectors on my mark…mark”
The nine huge articulated antenas extended over the massive central track structure, opening and extending their receptor beams. Each antena took it’s determined possition on the large hexagon formed by the tracks, each one focused directly over the main reflectors in each governorship’s capital city.
“Multichecking procedure…succesfull. Diverting signals to null focus now” Said loudly another tehcnician.
The proffessor leaned back to his chair, clearly relieved. “Good, good” He said to himself, then turned on the speaker “Prepare Ring Coordinators and initiate central core rotation, following procedure number six”
The main control bridge was suddenly in the middle of a large burst of activity. Hooverplatforms and Mechnochairs moved from one point to another with hastly technicians in order too comply with the orders of the Nexus Projetc leader.
“Perimeters A, B and C ready for relase. Awaiting confirmation from perimeter D” Informed the rumbling voice of one of the men in charge of that task.
“Initiating power procedure number six. Energizing Main Inertia Dampeners. Divert liquid catalyst to Core Area” Came another voice, this time a woman.
Among numerous voices and shouts from the various procedures being taking care of, proffesor Matthias was still able to understand each one of them. They have prepared for this very moment during the last two years. Every detail was taken care of, and no task was minor. Only by fully coordinating each one of them the station would be put into function. Any mistake, and most likely there will remain no one else on the Federation to remember it.
“Main Inertia Dampeners online. Proceed with stabilization”
“Core stabilized. Commencing coolant rotation”
“Perimeter D now functional. Sending verification order to main Ring control”
“Confirmation received. Full Ring Perimeter coordinated. System ready to launch.
Awaiting First Bridge order”
The last inform floated in the air for a few seconds, and then the whole bridge went silent. Only the distant humming sound of the Main Core could be heard. Not a single technician, scientist, politician or reporter in the whole area attempted to move a muscle. They all waited for one order, proffesor Matthias’ order.
Matthias had his eyes fixed over the large holographic diagram that represented the instalation. There, the Nexus seemed just a toy, a mere ilusion of the real one. He knew the magnitude of the station he was about to turn into functional. The moment he had been waiting for fifteen long years finnaly came to reality. And now he wasn’t even sure what to think.
“You know that there is no way back after this point” He thought “Once the Ring is ejected it can not be contracted and the whole activation process will become automatic” He passed his trembling hand before his face, cleaning away the drops of sweat that rained from his forehead “This is the most important point in your career, in your whole life. Just give the order and everything will be fine. We tested each possible error and the station is perhaps the most secure instalation in all the country. After this, the entire Ministry will be at your feets, claiming to name you Rex Provost. This is your time for success”
He leaned forward and touched the small microphone “Relase Projector Ring”
The control bridge became flooded with activity once again. Through the enourmous glass domes above it, from which the vast sea of clouds stretched to the horizon, miles above the Federation, the last rays of sunlight went away, and night fell over. The large hoovering station became iluminated by hundreds of thousands lights, becoming a second sun above the clouds.
With a barely notisable tremble, the whole station began moving. The rotative manuver allowed for the thousands of small spherical projectors to be relased in a coherent, spiraling pattern around the Nexus. The same procedure was at the same time a marvel of technology and an incredible spectable. Each projector, not larger than a human head, shone with preternatural light, it’s quicksilver surface reflecting the lights from the station. In a matter of minutes, the station came to a halt. It was completely surrounded by a large disk of projectors, each one in their precisely desiganted area.
“Ejection completed. Ring structuration completed” Announced a toneless voice of yet another technician.
The whole crowd that curretly populated the bridges exploded into cheers and shouts of success. Cameras flashed everywhere as reporters, politicians and scientists jumped from excitement.
Proffesor Matthias was smiling. Yellow teeths crowded his mouth while his eyes inspected the beautifull patterns made by the projectors.
“Establish direct connection and hand the procedure over to the central system”
Said this, he jumped from his chair to meet proffessor Nikita Dostoyanov, who had been patiently awaiting in the back of the room. The fat bearded man was smiling as well.
“We did it, Nikita, we really did it!”
Giving a powerfull hug to his assistant and life long friend, Matthias sweated of excitement.
“No, you did it, Matthias. If it wasn’t for your full commitement to this project through the last one and a half decade, none of us would be here, at the very roof of the world, seeing how future is being brought to us”
As the two men keept talking about the marvels of the at last functional mechanical marvel, the thousands upon thousands of silverine spherical projectors came to a complete rest around the facility. Then, a few seconds later, a powerfull and deafening blasting noise engulfed the Nexus, sucking away all other sounds. The crown that populated the bridge area became surprised by it, being unable to relase the slightest of sounds. Their ears went empty, only the vague metalic sound that signals silence resting in them.
The two scientists turned towards the glassy dome, also unsure of what was going on. Then they felt a fast feeling of pressure, and, with a cacophonic sound, everything went back to normal. Words, shouts, noises and rumbles came in, flooding the rooms with a true pandemonium of sounds. It was followed with a short lapsus of blurred images, and then it came back to normal.
Without a second thought, Matthias hastly went to the microphone "Full system check, full system check! Report any disturbance, and somebody find what the hell was that!" He cryed.
The whole crew began acting inmediately. Holopannels turned on and off, changing areas and screens, checking everything for possible failures. But none was found.
Shortly after, report came into Matthias holopannel. All seemed normal, and the Nexus seemed to be in optimal state.
He scratched his left cheek while looking at the information "I do not understand what was that. We had no such events in the computer simulations -he turned to Nikita- what do you think?"
The fat scientist shrugged "We are dealing with tachyons here. It could have been anything"
Matthias made a short pause and then continued "Indeed. This will require further research -his eyes turned to the dome and beyond, where the myriads of projectors ressembled a miniature galaxy around the facility- but, for now, all we can do is hope the Nexus work as we thought it would..."
Through the lasts decades, Tachyonic science has become one of the most dinamic fields of investigation in the FTR. However, most of it's new discoveries became secretive, due to strict security issues of the nation.
The Tachyon Netxus is the pinnacle of all this advancement. The massive project, which has been under development for the last fifteen years, has now finnaly reached completition, and the Consulate has allowed it's exposure to WTE and SFN members.
The Nexus is a titanic floating structure, hoovering nearly two miles above the Worldspire Mountains, the highest point inall the Federation. It's inmense, spiderlike shape is surrounded by several thousand tachyonic projectors. The structure itself is one great tachyon converter/rotator, which generates a stable flux of superluminal energies.
It's purposes are many. However, it is mostly centered on three aspecst: Production, Science and Defense.
First of all, the Tachyon Nexus is an unlimited and astronomically powerfull source of energy. Through the use of the Projection Ring, a large circular patter of small projectors, which surrounds the Central Nexus, the tachyon bolt energies can be diverted into the tens of thousands Tachyon Collectors, located in specific areas of the nation. This empowers the local industry and society with a safe, reliable and unlimited power source, throwing away the preious dependance on Hypermatterial Power, which, although powerfull, was highly dangerous and produced large amounts of hard to handle waste.
Second, the new influx of semi transdimensional energies to the Nexus, has turned the station into a thriving scientific core of the nation. It's monumental instalations, several miles in diameter and almost nine hundred meters in heigh allows for enormous amounts of investigative room. Almost the full percenatge of the tachyon-related investigation has been already transfered to the Nexus, and several of the Federation's most grand corporations have already expressed their interest on renting research space in the instalation.
Third, there is the important deefensive issue. Through the last half of the century, the whole international comunity has become more and more unestable, making our leaders come to worry. That is the reason for the large scale revitalization of teh once dead defensive department. Soon after the Nexus Project began, plans were made to fit the station to be able to providee massive protection to the nation.
Two major initiatives finnaly became true: The Tachyon Grid and the Bolt Discharge Matrix.
The Tachyon Grid is a nationwide tachyonic net of defense, which, once activated, literaly encircles the whole national perimeter with a powerfull tachyon wall, rendering the nation a virtual fortress for any land or sea based attack.
Next to it is the Bolt Discharge Matrix. Huge Tachyon Pylons were installed all around and inside the nation on highly strategic locations. These pylins act as reflector towers. Once required, the main station will send an overloaded bolt of tachyon energy, which will be captured by one of these pylons, to then relase it, with quite good aim, focused on the target. The effect is catastrophic on the target, literaly dismanteling the very fabric of it's atomic structure, by creating variable points of material densificatio and vanishment.
However, although the original plans contemplated faster-than-light discharges, which would hit the target even before the alarm was sent, several theoretical troubles began. Finnaly, it was proven that, due to the basic dimensional composition of our plane, ftl bolts were impossible. Still, the power of the Discharge Matrix is titanic, granting the much needed close range defense which the FTR lacked.
Asides from those quite important elements, the Tachyon Nexus is currently being investigated to see how far can it's full capacity be stretched. Some researchers belive that, if the appropiate power channels are oppened, the Nexus could be used to empower a nation-wide teleportation system. Although not yet proven, there is a high possibility for this to become true in the future.
