Mishaps

The M4A3 Sherman light tank moved slowly ahead on the streets of Manhattan. Outfitted with a flamethrower attachment it had been sent with other armored units into the city to finish the last of the clean up operations. It had begun with a simple experiment being conducted at the research laboratory in Huntington. A new strain of bacteria which emulated the flu but the side affects were much worse. Attacking the nervous system and the brain the victim would experiance sudden flu like systems followed by what a doctor would mistake for as psnumonia and then death after 48-72 hours. Spread through such little contact as the touching of skin to another or a simple sneeze the scientists felt they had a nice little toy at their disposale to use against certain nations in the future. However as the project wore on several of the scientists became disgruntled with the government and even began to forumalte plans of revenge. None of them were all to serious until the military learned of the supposed planning and executed 4 of the 5 conspirtors. The 5th one staying just ahead of the military managed to get several samples of the infection and sent them to an anti government insurgent force.

For 15 years the Red Brigade was a thorne in the side of the Federal Republic Government, ever since the nation had gotten itself back on its feet did the communists try to knock it back down. After the first civil war many of the RBs leadership was exected and the rest of the RB followers jailed for life on charges of treason. With the back of the RB broken they could only resort to taking a town and holding it until the FRA could clear them out. They were nothing like what other nations had to deal with but they were still time wasters. Receving the strand of bacteria, the RB went to work making more of the biological weapon which they had planned on using to try and cripple the government. Volunteers were selected and driving rental cars and vans to several cities in NYNJ they waited. The volunteers infected themselves with the strain and then proceeded to touch as many people going so far as to sneezing purposely on people as well. Infecting only a few hundred before police officers arrested them and put them away that hundred began to grow slowly.

It took several weeks after the inital deaths for the OSS and the Military to figure out what had taken place. President de los Santos had moved out of NYC when it became clear that NYC was afflicted with the same diseae Trenton, Newark,Buffalo, and Albany were all experiancing. Millions were dying in the five cities and there appeared to be little that could be done for them. Each city had to be forciably quarintined by both National Guard Units and Regular Military until a solution could be obtained. However for those inside of the cities a solution could not arrive fast enough. Order quickly broke down and chaos rained inside of the cities. It was everyone for themselves with the military providing little to no support.

Communications with the outside work were effectively terminated. The Federal Republic sealed its borders with outside nations and communications broke down. Flights to and from NYNJ slowed down until no one brothered to fly to NYNJ anymore. This was all to the glee of those incharge of the Red Brigade who began to use pirate radio to gather followers throughout the nation much to the discontent of the Government,Military and those loyal to the nation. However with the lack of a cure and the subsequent leak to the public that the infection was a military weapon the grumblings of civil war sounded again as people took up arms.

Internal Strife

Spewing flame from the main cannon of the M4A3 Sherman, the nearby building took to flame, and was soon engulfed. It was a process that was being repeated in the other infected cities, and it was a process that many in the Federal Republic of New York and New Jersey had grown to hate. President de los Santos's approval ratings on the situation had dropped drastically and there were open talks of impeachment and/or military coup. However the military dismissed all such claims and stated that they would remain true to the civilian government in any and all events. This is not however what the Red Brigade wanted, they wanted the military and civilian government fighting, and to Nathan Holn, the Red Brigades new commander the only way to get rid of the capitalist was to see that they collapsed form the inside out. However Holn was the only one who preached waiting for the right time and other RB Commanders saw the disapproval with the government as the chance they had been waiting for,for years.

There was no way they could take one of the major plague stricken cities. They knew that they was just to many troops in the area to hold one of the ruins and use the terrian to their advantage, however, with many of the military off holding back the people in the infected cities it was more than possible to launch assaults on small towns, cities, and even military bases. Holn was hessitant however and he didnt want to subject his unit of 5,000 to any of the upcoming conflict. So with the approval of the other commanders he and his men were held back in reserve for the time being.

The planning was simplistic and meant for speed, surprise was on their side, however timing wasnt. It was still undecided as well just how people would react to the armmed rebellion. If they found themselves fighting armmed loyalists in the streets of towns and cities, they would be bogged down here and there and the military would crush them before they ever had a chance. However if they could sway enough towns, enough villages, and even a major city or two they would have momentum they would need. Starting out on the western most parts of New York the Red Brigade numbered about 67,000 while the Federal Republic Armed Forces numbered around 2.8 million total. One of the short term goals of the RB was to swell the ranks to 100,000, it was believed that once that number could be reached the FRA would be hessitant to launch a full scale attack against the RB not having fought an actual war in close to a decade, the last time the FRAFs took on Iesus Christi in a short but bloody war.

However this was based on assumptions and prodictions and hopings for the best. The attacks would begin soon. Soon was broad term though as the RB commanders realizing the magnatiude of the objectives hesitated every so often to launch the beginning offensives. They wanted to wait, a sign, anything that would distract the government even more away from the internal strife and keep their eyes to the sea and sky, and not on the ground.

Meanwhile, back in Peterboro -

A; Does anyone know why New York and New Jersey are experiencing these crazy plagues?

B: I'm just wondering has it crossed over into our territory yet?

A: Not that I know of. We sealed off the border a couple days ago.

B: Do you think it's the elves?

C: I really doubt it's the elves. Did we give them the CV?

B: No, they shouldn't have any of the CV.

A: How do we know it's even the CV?

B: Well, it didn't work very well when the elves tried it on us in the spring.

D: True. It might be more favorable conditions in New York though.

C: Do you think we should march in southward then? Kick them while they're down?

D: I'd rather wait until this virus is contained.

C: Yeah, because we were planning on another invasion soon anyway.

A: I knew of that.

B: Is that security camera on?

D: Uh, crap.

Plagues,War,and Famine-Oh my...

It wasnt the ineptness of the Red Brigade command that led to its constant failure against government forces, it was the constant underestimation of how well prepared the government was to deal with communist uprisings. It was also a constant overestimation in the people and their attitude belief that if given a choice they would go with communisim. Especially with the radical form that the Red Brigade spewed over the radio waves. The openning shots with surprise on the Red Brigades part on just how easy it was to take ground in the rural areas. The Government already bombarded with messages from the clean up teams in the cities had a slow response time to the fact that commucations with the western territories had effectively stopped all together.

What was first thought to be a new case of what was being called Megraths Syndrome popping up all over the western territories it came as an absolute shock when several of the M4A3 light tanks were attacked on the highway heading into what could be described as occupied New York. AV-6B Harriers were dispatched to preform low level recon runs over where the Shermans had been attacked. These units only found themselves getting fired upon by shoulder launched SAMs and had to disengage from their runs only to have AH-64Ds come back and surpress the region with Hydra rocket-fire and 30mm cannon fire. The Red Brigade had as in other cases overestimated the will of the people and figured wrong on their sway in the battle between capitalism and communism.

What began as a small string of victories turned into an unwelcomed gureilla battle with loyalists that drew troops away from the fight with government forces to protect the rear supply routes from harassment. The plague itself was nolonger a factor in the fighting. Buffalo,New York City,Trenton,Albany, Newark were all smouldering the decom. units finishing their horrific jobs. Order was slowly returning to the eastern parts of the nation, although the plague had sent a panic into people and it appeared as if they would be poor crop harvests for the next year. A famine was what appeared next on the horizon for the nation, at least that is if calls for support went unanswered.

"We as a nation, are always grateful when our allies offer assistance, even when our lines of commuication have been dead for so long. We wish to discuss details of an aid package which would essentially be food shipments. Grain shipments as our own wheatcrops has also found itself being afflicted with Magrath's Syndrome. However in order to reduce the risk of your people contracting the illness any shipment you send should be paradropped into the nation."

Letters to Home
A pre-selected group of letters mailed by soilders in the Federal Republic Army to family and friends.

A poet-
"I was born to war, from Marathon, to Iesus Christi, to Diwaniyah, and the dominions beyond the seas, and into the heavens. I was born to conflict, from the chambers of diplomacy, to the treachery of espionage. I was born to the gun and the raised voice. Guns or butter was never a choice to my generation. It has, and will be for our generation 'Take the gun. The butter will be for your children.' How can it be for our children though when we still have so many wars to fight? My generation grows old yet my son gets to the age...I fear that my son twenty years from now will write these words over once more to his family while sitting in some post,in the middle of a place he'd rather not be hoping to get home before Christmas..."

A cynic-
"We heard that Syskeyia dropped a whole bunch of grain from the sky. I think I saw one of the chutes from the package. It was more or less a shame that when my squad was dispatched the cargo was already gone. Sgt Murphey says that it probably fell right into the hands of the Brigade. Or what they are now being called, the Holnist. I had a chance to listen to one of the pirate radio broadcasts during a lull in the fighting. Nothing good can come from what that man preaches. Such a distorted view of how the strong should rule is dangerous to the nation. But it seems no matter how many times we stop the RB's they just come back to be a thorn in our sides a few years down the line. If I had my way and I were president I would risk using Neutron bombs on our own soil. No better way than wiping out the RB wholesale. At the rate at which we are going it seems that is what is going to happen anyway. They say we'll be home by Christmas, that with the winter weather coming in early the RB will begin to lose the will to fight. Well they arent going to be running low on food, and I'm not sure what they'll use for shelter...but I wouldnt get me any gifts for Christmas...."

An optomist-
"We made repeated incursions into enemy territory today Dad. I cant go into specifics you know how it is. But it was one hell of a fight, some of the fiercest I've seen. We came out of it with only a handful of wounded but we managed to hold our objectives until we got the order to hightail it east once more for our lines. I'm not sure exactly why. We could have held out at that position came hell or highwater. I dont get the brass sometimes. The air force always has the worst timing, we spotted an enemy convoy heading to the north several days ago and radioed in for an air strike or gunship attack. We waited and trailed the slow moving trucks for several miles and a few hours before we decided to use the MLRS Batteries to clear the entire road and surrounding region. I dont exactly think Smokey the bear will be pleased that we charred a massive section of forest, but hey if it stops some of those RBers than I suppose you cant really argue with the methods. I should be with the way we've progressived against the RB home by Thanksgiving. Give mom my love...."

A realist-
"...I'll be home soon..."

Offical Statement:
"We would like to thank our allies who still after all this time are willing to come to our aid in our moments of need. We have the situation under due control and are now in the process of rebuilding. This is a process we are leaving up to our own people, the jobs are certainly needed at the moment and it will take awhile before we are exporting autos, soda, or our information services sector is back online. Although the New York Stock Exchange is reporting that operations will return to normal in several days."

"It is a tragedy," says Lady Diedre Rolt, His Majesty's Ambassador to the United Nations. "Turan," she turns to a man dressed in the uniform of the Valinon Red Cross.
"My Lady?"
"Work with the Baron Administrators of the Treaty Ports, tell them to marshal necessary supplies of food, water, and medicines. I want them aero-dropped to New York and Jersey at once. The Empire cannot just stand idly by and allow these people to suffer."
"Yes, My Lady."
She sighs heavily, "However, we must take necessary precautions ourselves. Alert all aerospace ports on Earth, travel to NYnNJ is to be restricted to flights only pertaining to official sanctioned matters or to relief supply shipments."
"Yes, My Lady," says her Sardaukar adjutant.

Tarasovka
19-10-2003, 18:10
Headquartersof the Taraskovyan Department of Public Healthcare,
Capital city of Vigvar,
Grand Duchy of Tarasovka,
Sisgardia.

Several professors gathered for an informal emergency meeting.

Subject of the meeting:

- The "plague" that was hitting the Federal Republic of New York and New Jersey.

Goals of the meetings:

- Determine whether the illness poses a potential threat to the Grand Duchy or to any Sisgardian nations.

- If yes, what can be done?

- If no, what can be done?

Professor Berezov, Academic of Medical Sciences, presided the meetings.
Professor Nervov, Candidate of Medical Sciences, was giving a brief on the current known situation.
Among the members of the meeting were Professor Keranov, Doctor of Medical Sciences and CEO of "Jisn' Pharmaceutics", as well as Professor Naigurov, Academic of Medical Sciences and head of VerTech's Bio-Chemical Research Laboratories.

Professor Nervov ended his brief and Berezov spoke:

- So, honourable collegues, what are your thoughts on the current situation?

Professor Naigurov spoke first.

- What little information we have, combined with the speed of the spreading of the disease...
As well as the what seems to be "emegency measures" taken by the governement of FRoNYnNJ, at least - the little that is known to us...
All these factors tend me to believe that we have to deal with something... "new"

- Would you insinuate that it is a... weapon?

The Professor nodded. He was the mind behind most of the Taraskovyan biological and chemical weapons - a true genius in his domain, although most of his discoveries weren't actively used...
Ebola and VX were nothing to the horrors, which were stored in different top secret locations throughout the Duchy, guarded by the TDI...

- I will not affirm anything. That is just a supposition, one among others...

Professor Kenthat, Doctor of Medical Sciences, remained silent for now, but he could not keep silent at this very phrase...

- You will not "affirm" anything, my dead collegue? And if it was just a new trend of some virus or bacteria? A natural trend?

Naigurov nodded.

- All may be...

- Honourable collegues, - professor Keranov spoke, - please, do not argue. The High Council of the Duchy is awaiting the decision of this meeting as whether it should intervene into the given situation...
I, as head of the primary Taraskovyan Pharmaceutical company, am for cooperating with the authorities of FRoNYnNJ to solve this situation.

The others only nodded. Professor Berezov stood up.

- Well than, I shall inform the head of the Healthcare Department and the High Council of the Duchy...

The rest of the men stood up and each exited the room...
