The Daistallian Mountain Raiders Battalion would like to conduct a short war games exercise. 1 battalion sized special operations unit sought for a high altitude war game to last 2 weeks or so. Operations will be held high in the Great Kraels range (altitudes between 5500 and 6500 meters, Himalayan terrain).

Our 3rd battalion, 362nd Special Forces Divison has been getting bored. They would like to participate in your training exercise.
Well some of our mountaineers are always happy to get some practice. How many should we scrounge up to send?

Grimdale: Sounds good.
MARAUD: Well the original idea was a one on one, and Grimdale got here first. However if Grimdale is up for a 2 on 2, and we can round up a 4th...
4th? He just walked in, if you want one.
I've got no problems with a 2 on 2, but I suggest that if we don't get someone in the next 24hrs we go ahead with what we've got. And also that we should keep it to no more than four nations at most. Another option might be to let MARAUD have twice as many troops as us and we team up. Just a thought.

looks like we*ve got 4. :) Busy today, but day off tomorrow, so I*ll set it up then. Meanwhile go ahead and arrive and all.
edited for typos
The pair of C-94 jet transports set down and the men and women of the 3rd Battalion disembark carrying their equipment with them. All highly trained ski and mountain troops they quickly finished unloading the two gigantic aircraft and were moving out for the position of the war games within an hour of arriving.
OOC: Standard equipment consists of mortars, 2 F-28 fighter/bombers, small arms, snowmobiles, and other assorted equipment.
OOC: I'm sending one Marine Battalion - they're trained for all-weather, all terrain operations. They're armed with light mortars, Uh-1N-4BN Huey utility choppers, and some Humvees for utility work.
Mostly this is an infantry unit (rather than make divisions specialize in one thing or another I'm trying out this all-terrain light infantry idea).
All the members of this battalion are quite at home in the snow, as this unit is considered a "special assignment" for those with the necessary outdoorsman's skills.
The individual infantryman carries all the usual goddies - M16s, M4s, M240s, and Predator antiarmor weapons (equally useful against fortifications).
The battalion's recon elements pick up the slack for direct-action SF missions, while the majority of them serve as standard light infantry.

Wersturm High Alpine Jager Base welcomes the arrivals *warmly* with cases of Daistallian chile schnapps (the unofficial drink of the mountain raiders), highland red wine, smoked trout (the national delicacy), and a lish barbeque (lish are cross between a yak, muskox, and rhino - delicous, while waiting for the remaining battion to arrive.
Who's teaming up with who? Or will it be a four way?

MARAUD has yet to arrive. We'll decide after they arrive, or tomorrow (late morning-ish Daistallian time) if they don't. We can add forces for a 2 on 1 if they don't show...

OOC: Off to bed soon. Assuming nothing from Remiesia in the next 20 or so hours (time befor I'm sure to be back on in RL), it will just be Grimdale and Daistallia.
Sorry...
so what's the deal now? Am I the odd man in?
If MARAUD's dropout screws up the balance, I can drop too if you'd like...or whatever...

OOC: Good to see you back Remiesia. :) Ok Grimdale's odd man out, with two battalions, correct?
Capture the flag? Quarter the map centering roughly on the central peak? If thet's all aggreable, first choice to Grimdale, second to remiesia, third to Grimdale's other unit, and I'll take homefield advantage on whichever quarter is left, if that is acceptable?
Also, I'm off work tomorrow and Monday, but may be a bit busy Monday. And, just so you'll know, IRL I'm in Japan about 12 hours (IIRC?) behind board time.
OOC: I'll take the northwest quadrent for my first unit, and if it's left the southwest for my second unit.
By the way, I'll be mostly unavailible until sometime Sat. afternoon or evening due to visiting my family for Columbus day. (That's Standard Eastern Time by the way.)

Grimsdale Western 1/2 Daistallia east, acceptable? 1 battalion or 2?
Sure, one battalion is fine, want to start in about seven hours? That's 10:00pm local time, I've got somethings to take care of tonight so I can't guarentee being back before then.
The 3rd Battalion is dug in on the western half of the combat area and awiating the commencement of the games.

OOC: Ready to commence when you are.
OOC- Since this is capture the flag, one of the F-28 Raptors goes to full optical and radar stealth, hovers over the flag as the co-pilot gets out, graps the flag and then flys back to it's home base.
IC- The 45th is ready to repel any assault. Do your worst.
A muffled blast causes the ground underneath the man's feet to tremble. Holding the binoculars up to his face he again scans the opposite mountain ridge, looking for any sign of the opposing army. A man wearing the uniform of a private comes up behind him, not bothing to salute. "Colonel, we've just finished blasting out a cave for the command center."
Colonel Matthew "Snow Fox" Wolfenstien turned around to face the newcomer. "Excellent, how are the rest of the defensives coming?"
"The auto cannon are emplaced and the last of the camouflage is being applied. The machine gun nests are in place, as are the morters, and the trenchworks are finished."
"Very good, though it's probibly unnecessary, remind everyone to double check their camouflage. Are the scout teams in place?"
"Yes sir, the snipers are also in position."
"Very well then, I think we're just about ready. Let's get this show on the road."

Senior Sergeant Wiens of the 1st Recon platoon signaled the three men in his patrol that the area was clear. He moved slowly and delibarately up the gully.
Lieutenant Marshal grinned as he watched the approaching patrol. Without the infrared binoculars, he'd never have seen them. But now they walking straight into one of the scout team's machine gun nests. A squad had already moved to block off the bottom half of the gulley. And with the machine gun at the top, there would be nowhere for them to run. He gave a slight grin at the thought that at least someone would be back in a nice warm building tonight. Suddenly the two soldiers manning the machine gun threw off the snow covered thermal camouflage cover they'd used for concelment and opened up on the exposed enemy patrol. Marshal picked up his sniper rifle and added his fire to that of the rest of his team.

Sr. Sgt. Weins and one other go down, their MILEs gear beeping. The remaining two take cover behind a large rock. Cpl. Whi returns fire while Sgt. Freid reports the ambush position to the waiting mortar team.
Two 50 mm mortar simulators bracket the MG.
Sgt. Freid shouts an adjustment into the radio over the volume of the incoming fire.
"We've got incoming!!" The report rang in Marshal's headphones. Marshall watched as a pair of mortar shells bracketed the MG nest. Flipping his headset to another channel he called back to base, asking them to trace the shells back to the mortar position. The small artillary radar the battalion had lugged up the mountain now proved it's worth. Within seconds of the enemy rounds landing, a quartet of 82mm mortars had opened fire on both the enemy mortars and the pinned enemy patrol squad.

Before the incoming landed, the alpha company light mortar section managed to get off a total of 7 shells before being disabled
As the simulators exploded around his team, setting off the remenants MILEs gear, Sgt. Weins mentally reviewed his patrols actions *At least we located part of the opfor. *
*Damn!* thought Senior Captain Haek, as he listened to the simulated destruction of his mortar section over the company net. *They must have managed to drag a counter-battery radar up here. Well done!* He began issuing orders for a hasty attack by 1st platoon on the located position.
Marshall considered the loss of the MG position in exchange for several enemy mortar well worth the exchange. He'd already set his men to shifting their positions and constructing more for the additional platoon that was being sent as reinforcements. Two pairs of men had been sent farther down the slope to act as an OP. Satisfied that by evening his position would be as secure as he could hope for under the circumstances he bent to the task of digging his foxhole deeper with a will.
Meanwhile, at 70,000ft one of the battalion's F-28 Raptors finished taking his infrared pictures of the enemy positions. Heading back to the small airfield that had been carved out on the opposite side of the mountain the pilot was satisfied with a job well done and the fact taht his next mission he would probibaly be carrying ordinence rather than a camera, simulated ordinance, but ordinance none the less.

As 1st Platoon creeps towards the flanks of the location of the ambush from the sides of the gully, the sniper team overwatching their movement spots the opfor platoon shifting positions.
*This is where our home field advantage comes into play.* The spotter thinks to himself, as the platoon makes maximum use of their knowledge of the ground to keep concealment.
*I love our new texting capacity* he thginks as he silently e-mails the platoon, using the cell phone bounced off one of the battalions portable cellular base stations, halting their movement and giving detailed observations of their positions.
*Hmmm... I wonder who else might be around.* he thinks, and scans the ambush sight. *Ah yes. There*s the OP they*ve put out* All the positions spotted have been texted to the platoon.
1st platoon goes to ground, waiting for the snipers move. The sniper waits until his spotter IDs an officer, then opens fire followed by the platoon opening fire on the positions given with MGs, assault rifles, and RPGs where needed.
Marshall and his men were taken completely by surprise by the sudden barrage of weapon's fire. Three of his men went down immediately before the rest could find cover and begin returning fire. Marshall craweled over to a private who was holding the radio as bursts of machine gun fire from the position behind him opened up with covering fire. "Have those reinforcements that are coming circle around behind these guys and get some mortar fire on them."
Within seconds the sounds of incoming mortar shells could be heard as the airbursting mortar rounds began to detonate among the enemy positions. A sudden increase in the volume of gunfire indicated that the reinforcements had managed to circle around behind the enemy and had opened fire. With the enemy now pinned between the two groups, both Grimdalian units began to encircle the now trapped unit.

Having done their damage, and bloodied the Grimdale forces (however slightly), 1st platoon recieves texted orders to withdraw. Using their intimate knowledge of the home ground, most of the forces manage to dis-engage before being trapped entierly. An unfortunate 12 man squad is completely pinned and cannot escape the encircling forces. They begin digging in for a serious fight.
(edited slightly for squads reaction)
Rather than take more casulalites from trying to dig out the now entrenched unit, Marshall used his built in helmet radio to get bearings on the trapped unit from three different positions. Using those and a gridded map he called back to the mortar squad, giving them the exact coordinates of the enemy position. The rounds were soon on the way, detonating mere feet above the ground. From one flank the sound of an automatic grenade launcher barked harsh through the cold mountain air, adding it's fire to the simulated inferno in front of the Lieutenant's positon.

As the sun sets, Col. Grimm*s data officer finishes downloading the data he has collected from various intel satellite sweeps purchased earlier in the day.
Col. Grimm looks over the data. *hmm... an interesting placement of the airstrip. We have AMR teams fairly close, right Sgt. Hermann?*
Upon the affirmative, texted orders are sent to certain AMR sniper teams in the area of the makeshift airstrip.
Meanwhile, 1st squad returns fire from their entrentched positions. Several members have gone down under the mortar barrage.
Marshall winced as the buzzer attached to the man next to him went off indicating a hit. A second automatic grenade launcher had joined the first, the din and smoke echoing and swirling back and forth within the small canyon was deafening and blinding. The sound of automatic rifle fire suddenly increased yet again. The reinforcements had started to close with the enemy.
Elsewhere: Colonel Matthew looked up from the pictures spread out on the table, a combination of infrared and normal pictures, together they formed a nearly complete picture of the enemy defenses. He turned to his executive officer. "OK Mack, I think it's time to start warming up the big guns."
"Yes sir." The ooficer replied before picking up the radio and making a quick call. A minute later the first of four 105mm mountain howitzers opened fire, firing from behind the mountain and directed by Forward Observers they were accurate, deadly, and as safe from return fire as anything in the army. Their shells began to methodicly pick apart the enemy defenses, giving priority to mortars and machine guns before proceeding to plaster groups of infantry and anything else that looked like a good target.

As the shells begin falling around Col. Grimms HQ, one of the few concentrated positions, orders go out over the text network. Casualties are heavy. at the HQ.
Sniper teams 1 and 2 open up on on the fighters reloading at the airfield with 21mm Anti-mateial rifle fire.
Sniper teams 3 and 4 open up on the artillery positions.
With only a few rounds three quarters of the battalion's air power had been wiped out as delicate elctronics and engines blew apart under theimpact of the incoming rounds. The remaining aircraft however had just taken off minutes ago for another recon run. Responding to the calls from the air field he came tearing back, given the location of both groups of snipers by teams on the ground he came in with his Vulcan six-pack blazing, pulling up at the last second to release a pair of napalm canisters. Fortunately for the snipers caught under them, they merely doused the area with a brillent yellow powder rather than flames. The pilot made pass after pass until if it had been real ordinance, nothing could have been left alive. The artillery crews had dived for cover in their bunkers when the first buzzer went off. As soon as the F-28 had finished it's runs and the all clear was given they quickly returned to the job at hand, and with only a short pause the guns were bleaching flame once again.

OOC: It seemed like a good idea at the time. Nice job cutting my air support. Of course you realise that now I've got three spare crew and that one plane will be flying close to 24/7 now since crew exaustion isn't a problem anymore, and I've got an extra three maintaince crews to help keep it flying. Smoke rose from the artillery simulator explosions all around the command bunker. The battalion XO reprted the damages to the colonel. *Sir, the battalion mortar positions have all been destroyed. We have heavy casualties in all the companies. We have lost all the sniper teams.*
*Damn. Well, let*s head out. The men will be waiting.*
They began heading for the rally point. On arrival, they were shocked to see that less than 200 survivors had made the RP.
"Cease Fire!" The cry rang through the battery. Exausted gunners and loaders walked limply over to their fox holes before collapsing.
"General, the enemy has been severly weakend, the time to strike is now."
"I know Mike, that's why I'm putting you in charge of all of 1st company and half of 3rd company. Your orders are to secure the objective. The remainder of the battalion will remain here to protect against a last ditch attempt by the enemy. You'll have all the support we can spare. The bad news is we're down to one working Raptor and our artillery ammunittion is getting low. On the upside, we've got plenty of mortar ammunittion."
"We'll manage sir."
"Very well then, assemble your men and move out by 1300 hours. Good luck Captain."
