The Death of John Cardinal Duras

CARDINAL DURAS, ARCHBISHOP OF NEW ROME, DEAD AT 62
Associated Press
Foul play suspected
John Cardinal Duras, Archbishop of New Rome, the spiritual head of the Catholic Church in Pantocratoria, has died at age 62 whilst speaking at a conference hosted by the Vortex Corporation, trying to convince his fellow delegates to contribute to an interdenominational fund for charity.

"His Eminence started getting confused about what he was saying, and then started to speak in French, mid-sentence, as if he wasn't aware that he was no longer speaking English." said Father Louis Antoniou, one of Cardinal Duras' aides. "Then he collapsed suddenly, and then died."

The coroner has ruled out a stroke or heart attack after a preliminary investigation, but has indicated that the Cardinal's behaviour just before his death is consistent with a problem in the Cardinal's brain. "Some stroke victims exhibit similar symptoms, but it is too early to tell." said Doctor John Drakos.

"There are traces of a substance which may or may not have triggered some sort of episode on the Cardinal's lips." said Doctor Drakos. "At this stage, it is impossible to rule out poison as the cause of death. We're waiting on the results from the lab."

John Cardinal Duras was the Archbishop of New Rome, and was recently appointed the leader and spokesman of the Pantocratorian Church at the Council of the Church in Pantocratoria. He entered the priesthood at the age of 18, and became Bishop of Demetriopolis at the age of 39. Ten years later, he was appointed Archbishop of New Rome, and at the age of 54, he was made a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. Masses are being held in every parish in Pantocratoria to remember the nation's departed spiritual leader.

Thanks to the help of toxicologists from Jeruselem, the coroner's office has identified the substance on John Cardinal Duras' lips as part of a family of poisons which gradually shuts down brain functions, eventually causing death.

The coroner's office is now "99% certain" that this substance is responsible for the death of Cardinal Duras, according to coroner Doctor John Drakos.

"The police are investigating the matter, and so far, the Vortex Corporation has cooperated completely." said HIH the Prince Constantine, Minister for Public Safety. "I am confident that the police will find the responsible parties and bring them to justice."

"We suspect both vampire and elven terrorist groups." said HIH the Princess Irene, Minister for Cultural Development. "These subhuman scum have plotted to bring down the cornerstone of Pantocratorian culture from the day we joined the international community. They must be stopped!"

"Her Imperial Highness doesn't have access to any police reports I don't have access too, and nothing I've received indicates that any sort of terrorist group, let alone an elven or vampire one." said HIH the Prince Constantine. "Let's not jump to conclusions here."

As a matter of fact, we suspect that the poison used was the Black Lotus extract, used by our assasins. Of course we deny any involvement in this, but that poison was without any doubt elven made. Maybe the Empire of Pantocratoria can let one of our experts examine the proofs, so we can be sure about this matter...

After examining the sample. We are 100% sure that it's Black Lotus Extract, and that this poison was the cause of the Cardinal death. As far as we know, only elven nations use this poison. We suspect that the assassin is an elf. We want to cooperate with Pantocratoria in finding out who's responsible of this murder.

Cardinal Johannes Richelieu had this to say. "If I ever find out who did this grevious sin, I will send them directly to hell! Do you hear me, you athiestic piece of scum? I know you're listening! The Holy Roanian Inquisition is closing in on you, your days are numbered!" The cardinal paused to breathe. "How dare you kill him before I got the chance!"

His brother, Bishop Jaqques Richelieu, gave the following statement. "Johannes was never really planning to kill Duras. Well, not really. He talked about it often, but we think that if Johannes had been behind this Duras would have exploded or something. Certainly not poisoned."

The Queen of Jeruselem suspects a deeper plot behind the killing. Rival Cardinals are getting ready for being selected to replace Pope John Paul II and some are eliminating threats to their chances. Cardinal Johannes Richelieu is a suspect considering the circumstances.

Jeruselem does not have any Cardinals who have any chance of claiming the Papalcy. As keeper of the Holy Lands, Papal law 1562 does not allow a Cardinal from the Holy Lands to become a pope due a agreement made in the 1400s. In return, the Cardinal of Jeruselem is allowed powers to regulate non-Catholic religions in Jeruselem.

CARDINAL "WAS CERTAINLY POISONED" SAYS CORONER
Associated Press

The death of Archbishop John Cardinal Duras has been ruled a homicide by the coroner's office, which named the cause of death as an elven poison which gradually shuts down the victim's brain, leading to death.

The poison is known as "Black Lotus" and is only used by elven assassins, the Aelosian toxicology teams working with the Pantocratorian coroner's office said. Poison experts from Jeruselem have indicated that assassins using Black Lotus are often employed by Islamic terrorist organisations.

"We don't know whether a Moslem group is behind this assassination yet - all we know for sure is that the Cardinal was poisoned with Black Lotus extract." said the Police Commissioner.

"We can't rule out vampire involvement at this time." said HIH the Princess Irene, Minister for Cultural Development, who contacted the Associated Press unsolicited to make her statement.

"No, we can't rule out anything in the investigation at this time," said HIH the Prince Constantine, Minister for Public Safety, "except the Ministry for Cultural Development! What does a murder investigation have to do with Cultural Development?"

Cardinal Duras was attending a religious conference in New Dawn, in the Vortex Corporation at the time of his death and apparent poisoning. His aides for the conference were Father Louis Antoniou and Father Jacob Thracia. Also present at the conference were several other cardinals, most prominently His Eminence Johannes Cardinal Richelieu from Roania. His Grace Bishop Mangunvijaya from Tanah Burung was also there - Cardinal Duras had recently issued a bull of excommunication against Bishop Mangunvijaya and the Church in Tanah Burung over a doctrinal conflict in regards to the sacrament of marriage, although the two bishops seemed to be quite friendly towards each other in person (it was with some regret with which Cardinal Duras issued the bull at the bequest of the Council of the Church in Pantocratoria). Several other delegates attended, including Major Shela Steel of the Dominion of Axackal II, an atheistic heretic who only intended to try to spread the bizarre ideology of the Dark Lady. High Impreceptor Kit of the Rabid Liberals, a monk from Celebourne, and many others also attended.

At this stage, the assassin is believed to be one of these delegates or an aide to one of these delegates. To the best of our current intelligence, no elves, vampires, or Moslems were in attendance, however, we will wait for confirmation from the Vortex Corporation about this before stating it unequivocably (Father Antoniou suggests that Major Shela Steel may have been an elf, which leaves us in doubt as to the veracity of our existing intelligence).

The assistance of any and all of Pantocratoria's friends would be most welcome and will most certainly be utilised. Already thanks to toxicology experts from Jeruselem and Aelosia, we have identified the poison and started to profile potential assassins.

Cardinal Richelieu was deeply insulted at this. "How dare sheccuse me! Me! I have no aspirations to the Papal throne."

"What about all those threatening letters you sent to Rome last week?" the other Roanian cardinals asked. ((Remember, Mexico City has around 20 Cardinals))

"Quiet, all of you. I had nothing to do with this. And next person who says I did visits the dungeon. Running the Roanian catholic church is enough. By the way, how goes my appeal to be named Patriarch?"

It is known 3 Cardinals of Holy Latin Empire are eligible for the Papalcy, but the Emperor downplayed their chances "Our cardinals spend more time raising money for AIDS research than summoning support for the Papalcy. They are too young to be considered. Duras was a real candidate and a man I liked."

CARDINAL'S WILL CALLS FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
Associated Press

The last will and testament of Archbishop John Cardinal Duras has been read to the Council of the Church in Pantocratoria today at eleven o'clock in the morning in the Cathedral of Christ Pantocrator in New Rome.

The will called for Christian unity through "a return to the catholicity of Holy Mother Church - the joining of all Christian men and women together in the celebration of the universal faith."

The Council of the Church rescinded all excommunications it has issued after hearing the will read, most noticeably against the antipope Pious XIV (who the Council will not recognise as Pope), and against Bishop Mangunvijaya of Tanah Burung and the churches in communion with his bishopric.

"Cardinal Duras regarded our reasons for excommunicating both of these wayward bishops as legitimate, but always urged us to leave the consideration of those reasons to the higher authority of the legitimate pontiff." said Bishop Jacques Conomos of Louisville. "After seeing the Cardinal matyred whilst at a conference with representatives from religious groups the world over, the council recognised the danger of the fragmentation within the Church which occurs when regional churches excommunicate each other left and right."

The Cardinal's will also spoke of the Church in Pantocratoria hosting a Great Council of the Catholic Church from all nations to reaffirm John Paul II as the Pope, and to move beyond the petty squabbles which have dominated Church politics over the last few months.

"All churches which consider themselves to be Catholic would be invited to send their bishops, including Orthodox Churches out of communion with the See of Rome." said Bishop Conomos.

A local bishop commented "I hope the ultra-conservatives do not push their agendas for sake of unity. Moderates like us will suffer otherwise. God willing, it will be a success."

"POLICE ARE CLOSING IN ON THE KILLERS!" SAYS MINISTER
Imperial Daily

The new Minister for Public Safety, Guillame Armenian, has released a statement saying that the police are closing in on the killers of Archbishop John Cardinal Duras.

"The police believe that an elven terrorist cell, part of a larger organisation called the 'Global Human Extermination Front', was responsible for the assassination of our beloved Archbishop of New Rome." said the Minister.

"The 'Global Human Extermination Front' is an elven terrorist organisation dedicated to the erradication of human culture. We believe that the cell responsible for the assassination of the Cardinal may have obtained material assistance from several Islamic terrorist groups, the names of which the ministry is withholding to protect our investigation." he said.

"Our intelligence suggests that the Global Human Extermination Front has widespread support amongst elves, and that the Front is particularly committed to the destruction of Pantocratorian culture, which it sees as the stalwart of all humanity." said a senior ministry official.

"Their methods usually involve infiltration of human society either through elven agents pretending to be friends of humans, or elven agents disguised as humans. All Pantocratorian citizens should be on the look out, and should notify the police or the Ministry of Public Safety directly if they see or hear about apparent humans who don't conform to Pantocratorian cultural norms, or if they see an elf." said the official.

"This information is all new to me. I never saw any report saying anything like that." said HIH the Prince Constantine, former Minister for Public Safety. "I'm not saying it isn't true, just that I am surprised to hear the new minister make these claims so soon after assuming office, when I hadn't heard anything about them less than 12 hours ago!"

Global Human Extermination Front?. That's a lie. No organization exists with that name. Elves are not against the human culture, they just want to preserve their own. "What do you make of it, Lord James?" Minister Cummings asked as he replaced the paper in a folder.

"Poppycock! We've never heard of any such thing. Global Human Extermination Front? A new minister in a new government conveniently discovering information completely unknown to the previous government? Impossible." Reynolds stroked his gray beard thoughtfully. "We still consider Roania a prime suspect in Cardinal Duras' death. But, this," Reynolds gestures towards the file folder, "this is looking like a frame-up by the new government of Princess Irene. And that puts her squarely on the list of suspects. Kill an obstacle, blame his death on a scapegoat and ride that to power. Hmmm. I wouldn't be surprised to see Princess Irene use this as an excuse to delay the upcoming elections or move against supporters of the old government. The situation may become very grave shortly..."

He would much rather be at home attending his duties. However, he could not counter the Cardinal's argument. Things were afoot - dangerous things - and help was needed. Also, he was rather pleased to note, the number of Catholics in the Empire was growing - mostly through refugees and other immigrants, but growing nonetheless.

After a seemingly endless period of time, the door opened. Cardinal Walsh stepped out with a smile. "His Holiness agrees, John."

Archbishop of Citadel Excalbia Named New Cardinal

Rome(ENS) - The Vatican announced today that the Archbishop of Citadel Excalbia, who was visiting the Holy See, was named a Cardinal by the Pope. In his first public statement John Cardinal Friesz said, "This is recognition that the Church is growing in the Holy Empire and that Excalbian Catholics are beginning to play a role on the greater stage of catholic thought and practice." Cardinal Friesz and the Empire's first Cardinal, Cardinal Walsh, joined in saying that the Pope's move also constituted an endorsement of Excalbia's history of interdenominational cooperation and Christian unity.

A statement from the Tanah Burung Conference of Catholic Bishops

It is with sorrow that we hear of the death of John Cardinal Duras. We did not always see eye to eye with him. Yet, he was a man of God, a faithful servant of the Word. His loss is felt throughout the church universal, and he is remembered in the prayers of the faithful throughout Tanah Burung this week.

The Cardinal's last testament expressed his fondest wish for Christian unity. And with joy, we learn that the church in Pantocratoria has lifted the order of excommunication against our church. In honour of the Cardinal, our church will of course be present at the council of unity he has called for with his last breath.

"Well," Walsh sits his glass on the table, "the Holy Spirit moves in many ways. An election in the College, with all factions in the Church feeling that they have put their best representative forward, might help us all unite behind the winner and put aside our differences." OOC: Wow, you know what the funniest thing I've ever seen is? Someone who comes into a thread about the death of a character and mistakes it for a debate about God, and posts about how dumb it is, because they just couldn't keep their irrelevant opinions to themselves and leave the thread read but uncommented.

Someone that moronic - now THAT'S the funniest thing I've ever seen.

I'm sick of people coming into threads where the word God is even mentioned EVEN WHEN THE THREAD ISN'T A RELIGIOUS DISCUSSION THREAD who just have to let us know what their opinion about the existence of God is. For crying out loud, the thread is about the death of a character in my country, and all the scheming that has taken place as a result of his death, not about the existence of God! Save it for the General forum, I'm tired of people interrupting my RP threads!

Sorry for the rant but ARRRG... :x

OOC: Even still, it is totally irrelevant, there is no discussion of God in this thread, this is about the death of an important character in Pantocratoria and the scheming in the wake of that death. Save your opinion for a thread where it isn't off topic, please.

Meanwhile, John Cardinal Friesz is aboard the Soaring Peacock flight from Rome to New Constantinople. While Friesz is not one for politics, he couldn't argue with Cardinal Walsh. Matthew wasn't as much a political creature as Cardinal Richelieu, but he did seem to understand how the game was played and John trusted him. He leaned back in his comfortable first class seat and reviewed again what he planned to say to the Archbishop of New Constantinople.

Jean Cardinal Poitiers-Phocas greeted Cardinal Friesz at the airport, accompanied by His Imperial Highness the Prince Andreus, Despot of New Constantinople.

"Your Eminence, welcome to Pantocratoria!" says Cardinal Poitiers-Phocas.

"My Lord Cardinal, I hope you enjoy your stay here in New Constantinople." says Prince Andreus as he kisses Cardinal Friesz's ring.

Cardinal Friesz blesses the Despot of New Constantinople. "Your Highness, thank you for your welcome. I am sure that my stay here will be pleasant. I have heard wonderful things about your country and your city from my friend, Reverend Donnelly." Friesz turns to the Pantocratorian Cardinal. "Your Eminence, a pleasure to finally meet you in person. It seems that there have been many developments lately that may affect the Church. My elder, Cardinal Walsh, and I are anxious to hear your views and seek your counsel. I hope we may speak at your convenience. But for now," he turns back to the Despot, "I am grateful for your hospitality and at your disposal."

"So Eminence, with what may my humble counsel be of assistance to such an esteemed prince of the Church as yourself?" enquires Cardinal Poitiers-Phocas as the party walks to the Demetrine Palace through the old quarter of New Constantinople.

"Well," Walsh sits his glass on the table, "the Holy Spirit moves in many ways. An election in the College, with all factions in the Church feeling that they have put their best representative forward, might help us all unite behind the winner and put aside our differences." Walsh looks thoughtfully into the distance between him and Richelieu. "However, Eminence, you are an astute observer and may just be correct. Tell me about the united front you envision."

"A united front behind someone trusted and well liked. Someone the college would unite behind." Cardinal Richelieu coughed. "In fact, I was wondering if you would like the job."

This man... he'll be easy to manipulate into my true goal.

Walsh shook his head. "No, no, I just don't feel that I am not the right choice for the papacy. I feel my true calling may lie elsewhere," Walsh takes a look at his watch, "in fact, I believe the Curia should be about to announce the Holy Father's decision any moment." Walsh sees the question on Richelieu's face and smiles sweetly. "Oh, sorry, I wasn't at liberty to say anything until the statement was released, but," Walsh quickly picks up his mobile phone and sees the SMS message he was expecting, "since I see it was just announced... The Holy Father has asked me to head the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - the Holy Inquisition." Walsh takes a sip of his wine. "That will, however, leave me in position to be even more useful to implement a united front."

Excalbian Named to Head "Inquisition," New Archbishop in Landing

Rome (ENS) - In a surprise move, Matthew Cardinal Walsh, current Archbishop of Landing and Excalbia's first Catholic cardinal, was named to head the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - the institution once known as the Holy Inquisition. "My job is not to persecute heretics,” Cardinal Walsh said in a statement released by the Vatican, "but to help promote the teachings of the Church and to prevent the truth of the Gospel from being corrupted by falsehood. The true Gospel is a message of peace and grace; not of prejudice or self-interest." Since this move will take Cardinal Walsh to the Vatican full-time, Bishop Miguel Rizo, currently Bishop of Southport, was named Archbishop of Landing. It is expected that Bishop Rizo may be named a cardinal shortly.

"Believe me, I'm well aware of all the intrigue..." he says, nodding. "...but I'm sure that in the end, the right man will be elected, regardless of the political game which is going on."

"As for the circumstances of Cardinal Duras' death..." he says, his expression saddening a little. "...I haven't seen any police report or spoken to anybody involved in the investigation. "Thank you for your insights, Eminence. Now, on a different subject, my friend, Rev. "And you have my vote, Johannes. But some of them think that we must move forward." It was the wrong thing to say, and as soon as the words crossed his lips Pedro winced.

"Yes, Eminence," Alsgood says.

"Yes, Em.. er.. Matthew. Exactly where will you be going?"

"I think to start with, I should visit the Holy Latin Empire, Tanah-Burung, Pantocratoria - of course - and," Walsh smiled, "Roania. "Yes, Matthew, right away."

KILLER ALMOST CAUGHT SAYS OFFICIAL
Pantocratorian National Investigator

According to an anonymous official from the Ministry for Public Safety, John Cardinal Duras' assassin may be close to capture.

"Remnants of the same batch of poison used to spike the Cardinal's water were found in a container on temple grounds." said the anonymous official. "The container was a modified locket, of the type worn on a chain around the neck. It would've been impossible for Vortex Corp. guards to detect."

The official said that a broken chain of the appropriate sort was found in the same area as the locket. "Minute fragments of dead skin found on the chain were collected for DNA analysis."

"DNA tests were complicated by our lab's inexperience with elven DNA, but we have now analysed the sample. We're gathering samples from databases around the world - we'll soon find one which matches that of the killer." said the official.

Cardinal Friesz nods and moves towards one of the empty chairs. “Thank you, Your Highness. Your hospitality is greatly appreciated.” Friesz takes his seat and waits for the lunch to be served.

“Your Highness,” Friesz says sincerely as he leans slightly towards Prince Andreus, “your city is as beautiful as Rev. Donnelly has told me. Jacob, you may know, is an old childhood friend of mine, and he is quite taken with your country and your people. He tells me that he feels that Pantocratoria and Excalbia, while certainly having many differences in history, style and culture, are kindred spirits. And I must tell you that I am finding myself in agreement with him.”

Friesz takes on an earnest expression. “He was particularly impressed with the way Pantocratoria has opened its doors to refugees fleeing religious persecution. I know that many of the refugees are here in New Constantinople. Excalbia has also taken in many refugees, so we know the strain it can place on one’s economy and infrastructure.” Freisz paused and felt a twitch of nervousness. He refocused his mind and let it pass. “He, and I, could not miss that your city’s infrastructure seems similarly taxed, Your Highness.”

“His Imperial Majesty, David IV, has been following our Ambassador’s reports quite closely and he, too, feels a bond to Pantocratoria. He has asked me to speak with you about being of some assistance. First, our Church in Excalbia has long collected a special offering for refugees. Currently, there are few additional uses for the fund in Excalbia, so we were wondering if use could be made of it here in New Constantinople. Bishop Purins, the leader of the Church of Excalbia, has also told me that his church collects a similar offering and would like to make a small of it available to match our funds. In Excalbia, they are far more numerous and, therefore, control far more resources, so but a small part of their fund will be able to match our contribution.”

Friesz tried to read the Prince’s expression and felt his nerves return. Oh, why couldn’t I have stayed in my simple parish! He looked for a drink and took a small sip of water from a glass.

“Finally, Her Imperial Highness, Princess Christianna, the Emperor’s younger sister, heads a foundation dedicated to developing housing and infrastructure for the poor. She would like to come to New Constantinople and lead an effort to redevelop the refugee quarter, to provide them with better facilities and housing. Her plans also include the development of commercial and industrial zones, with the hopes that businesses, both Pantocratorian and Excalbian, might relocate here and provide jobs and incomes for the refugees.”

Friesz again tried to read the Despot’s face. “His Imperial Majesty in no way wishes to interfere in your domestic affairs, Your Highness, and he was very sensitive about giving any wrong impressions. He merely respects your efforts in this area and wishes to express his support and solidarity.”

I'd welcome Excalbian assistance in meeting that gap, and redeveloping the shanty town that is New Galata."

"And if Her Imperial Highness would like to come to New Constantinople to personally oversee that development, she would be most welcome. However, I will be gone for a few days, attending a ball in Finara for the Finaran Princess Lila, so I suggest she doesn't come immediately, but rather, waits for my return, so that I can see that she is welcomed in an appropriate manner." says Andreus. He looks at his watch. "In fact, after dinner, I'm going down to Despot's Wharf to board my yacht and set sail. I hope you'll not think me a poor host."

Shall we say that this can be achieved with Princess Christinna's assistance? 8)

OOC: OK. We'll see when Andreus returns to see if it worth sending Princess Christianna or whether we'll just consider it "done."

ELVEN PRINCE ARRESTED
EXTRA

Police have entered the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator with an arrest warrant for the Aelosian Prince Bastianel, alledged assassin of John Cardinal Duras.

"A witness came forward and gave a statement that Prince Bastianel had confessed to the crime." said the Minister for Public Safety. "That gave us probable cause to test a DNA sample taken from Prince Bastianel when he was tagged with a tracker chip. The DNA was a match for DNA found on a necklace found in Vortex Corporation territory, which was linked to the batch of poison used to drug Cardinal Duras' water."

Police advised that they expected resistance, but did not want to use force in the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator, to avoid an international incident.

"We just want to bring the suspect to trial, and see justice done." said the Police Commissioner of New Rome.

AELOSIAN GOVERMENT OUTRAGED

The Aelosian goverment made yesterday an announcement about the arrest of Prince Bastianel, accused of the murder of Cardinal Duras.
Due to the absence of the ShadowPrince and the Imperial Chancellor, the Chief of the Goverment Marquis Haralis Lorindel decalred about the matter:

"This is a plot of the new goverment of Pantocratoria to frame the elves in their own affairs. Our own investigation leads us to the stealing of four vials of Black Lotus Poison from one of our military facilities by an unknown human. We deny any involvement of the Prince Bastianel in this matter, because he has never entered the Vortex Corporation Territory. We suggest to the Pantocratorian courts to cease the harassment of one of our most important nobles, or face the consequences. We don't want to create an international incident about this matter"

Walking along a path beside the harbor, John Cardinal Friesz turns to Cardinal Poitiers-Phocas. “Your Eminence, I have enjoyed my visit to your wonderful city. Unfortunately, I must take my leave. I have received word that Matthew Cardinal Walsh is en route to New Rome to for the Great Council and I would like to go and greet him before I return to Excalbia. Would you consider coming with me to New Rome to meet with Cardinal Walsh? I am sure he appreciate the opportunity to meet with you and Cardinal Conomos before the Council.”
