Marine Pollution Charter

'In the interests of a cleaner maritime environment and for safeguarding the rights of present and future generations;

All Mediterranean states agree to refrain from dumping industrial and non-industrial chemical and biological materials in the seas, waters, maritime areas, rivers and affluences and naturally occuring lakes of the region.'

Nations will always have our support in efforts to preserve our environment, but I would caution against the blanket ban proposed by this charter. We must deal with the problem of waste, and, for some wastes, natural waters are the most appropriate disposal method. Metal salts, for example, will do far more harm if they leak into groundwater from landfill than they will in the already salty oceans. We would advise, therefore, that tough restrictions, rather than a total ban, are placed upon marine, lacustrine and riverine dumping.

This critique aside, however, we applaud unreservedly the spirit of the resolution, and offer any assistance you require in your mission to clean up the Mediterranean.
