Kaze Progressa began their quest for Field Hockey World Cup glory at the Kaza Hockey Center against Grand master Mark, the only seeded team in their group. Most had this down as a match that would determine the side's capabilities and likelihood of qualification, and the sold-out crowd of 19,000 told its own story.

The Progressans were highly attacking from the outset, as befits their team game philosophy, and were almost rewarded in the second minute when a long-range effort from Xai Maurqaz took a wicked deflection off a GMM defender that sent the puck against the outside of the post.

GMM piled on the pressure themselves, but were constantly denied - including from two consecutive penalty corners - by goalkeeper Naurla Maurenti. Eventually though, the resistance was broken in cruel fashion when Euqain Mayur deflected the ball into his own net in the process of trying to stop a shot from another penalty corner.

Within 90 seconds of that catastrophe though, the crowd were sent into raptures when Maurqaz beat two GMM defenders before slotting coolly home past the keeper. The crowd begged for more, but didn't get it despite three straight penalty corners in the last three minutes. The 1-1 draw was generally seen as a fair result given the yo-yo nature of the match.

Eua Zarb, the team manager, said '3-3 might have been a more fitting score given the attacking nature of the match, but a draw's the right result - we had periods of dominance and so did they... if we can get a win or two from our remaining group phase matches we can look forward to the knockout rounds with confidence.'

The first international game of the rejistanian hockey team against Akbarland ended in a narrow loss, which did not reflect the game correctly. The rejistanian team was at the beginning not very sure in their movements. It could clearly be seen, that this team has never played in this formation before. It was pure luck, that the first goal was not taken in the first minutes. When the Rejistanha'ny attacked you could see, horrible errors. It came like everyone has predicted: A fast puck from an Akbarlandian player was unreachable for goalie Hetes. The coach Sa-Tri On reacted and substituted Isi Len for Xatri Y. This improved the game, because now, many players on the field normally play in the Miki-irani Na-ovi Hockey team.
When time paased, the Rejistanha'ny's game improved. But they had was bad luck, that the chances they had all went in vain.

OOC: The names may confuse, but the coach is really named On, Sa-Tri and there is a player who's last name is Y.

Blinking, the Tanah Burung field hockey players stepped off the blimp that had carried them to Kaze Progressa. They hoped to do better here than they in the first World Cup at home. Their team had been augmented by several refugees from Floating World who took refuge in Tanah Burung after the Floating World government threatened to drown them for their poor performance.

But it was not to be. With an opening-day loss to Voyger, the hockey Crocodiles -- let's call them the Crockies -- were off to another slow start. The star of the day was goal keeper Delores Nuku'alofa, one of the refugees from four years ago. Otherwise, the Crockies gave a lacklustre performance.

Final result: Voyger 1 Tanah Burung 0

Gavin: Hello, and welcome to the 2nd Hockey World Cup, coming to you from beautiful Kaze Progressa. The Realm look to defend their World Championship, and opened play today with a 1-0 victory over Ur6. Garett Thomas scored the lone goal, opening his final international competition, as he announced shortly before the Cup.

Mike: Shawn Litoerid looked strong in goal, as he posted his first shut-out in Cup play. The Ream, who last year were not picked to advance to the Quarterfinals, now see themselves as the main target of all the nations, as they look to defend their crown.

Gavin: We spoke with Garett Thomas before the tournament, and here's what we have to say:

(Interview with Garett Thomas runs)

Garett: We have to go in focused as much as the last Cup. We can't take this as a forgone conclusion, or be complacient with winning last time. This is my last run, and I want to go out on top, as #1, and hopefully next time we will be hosting the Cup as two-time defending champions.

(Cut back to remote studio)

Gavin: We will be back later with some post-match thoughts, but for on, we return you to the Realm and our WRSN studios.

KM: ...And in other sports news, Ravenspire's initial outing in the second international World Cup of field hockey -- the first in which the team participated -- resulted in a stunning 4-2 victory over Oglethorpia.

MB: It seems, Kath, they were expecting a team heavily focused on defense, like Ravenspire's football has traditionally fielded. Instead, they encountered a fast, aggressive one.

KM: Probably a result of the fact that the closest traditional sport to field hockey in Ravenspire is a foxgirl game derived from a martial-arts training exercise. I understand the coaches had to repeatedly stress the fact that directly attacking your opponents is not acceptable in field hockey.

MB: It'd probably make for a more interesting game if it were, though. Speaking of foxgirls, though, the team is full of them, unlike the football World Cup team. That might be another factor. It looked almost as though they'd never seen one.

KM: They probably hadn't, except for photos. It wasn't until World Cup 5 that Kaede Kitsuki joined the Ravens, and she was the first athlete of the race to really achieve prominence in a non-martial sport.

MB: Could be. In any event, the 4-2 win is a strong start for the field hockey team; let's hope they can sustain it. Meanwhile, let's take a look at the football World Cup...

Before the second game, Coach On has promised the fans a better game. So expectations were high when the Rejistanha'ny met God Squad. In the first seconds of the game, Y managed to score the first-ever rejistanian goal which is also one of the fastest goals in the history of the field hockey cup. This unexpected lead did not last very long, since God Squad played very agressivly and manged to equalise the score soon. Coach On shouted such words, that the rejistanian television had to bleep him out in their live transmission. So say the following things quickly: Gods Squad archieved 3 more goals, partly because of alarmings errors in the rejistanian defense, partly because of pure luck. But the Rejistanha'ny did not give up. They kept on fighting and changed the result to a 2:4. The second goal was scored by Jiveb Hangatil, who normally plays for Sike Tarante.

(Cut to Kaze Progressa)

Gavin: Hello and welcome to SportsView. Today's match between the Realm and Halfassedstates ended up on the negative end for the Realm, as they suffer their first ever Cup defeat 3-2. This makes it necessary for the Realm to win in their final match in order to advance to Round 2.

Mike: Disappointing wasn't the word to describe the Realm's locker room after the match, as the asquad seems to have lost what the had in the first Cup to win the world championship.

(Highlights of match rolls)

Gavin: The Realm never really was in the match to be honest, trailing early 2-0, then 3-1 at the half. A fluke goal by Smitye in the 2nd hlaf made it 3-2, however the game was much more of a blowout than the score shows. We spoke with Coach Raymond Shanneilok after the match, and here's what he had to say.

(Coaches' interview now runs)

Coach: We just didn't have it out there today., and I'm really disappointed in our guys. We did show any heart or play like we wanted to win.

Mike: What steps do you need to take in your next match?

Coach: We have to win at all costs, period. If we lose we're out of the tournament, and we can't let that happen this soon. We have to play totally opposite of our match today and win big next match.

(Cut back to remote studio)

Gavin:L We will be back later with some other interviews with the players, but right now it's back to the Realm.

Meanwhile, from the Daily Kangaroo:

A NATION WATCHES IN FEAR

Kaze Progressa are likely to need to defeat Manky tonight in the Kaza Hockey Center in order to progress to the round of 16 after a second consecutive 1-1 draw, this time against Time To Bomb Saddam.

The result was far more humbling than the first match, against established power Grand master Mark, for Time To Bomb Saddam is one of the smallest nations entered. Kaze Progressa took the lead early on through Xai Maurqaz, before embarrassingly conceding a goal in the dying moments of the first half after defender Awquk Kamuwilaz fell over trying to defend a penalty corner. Zepp Lau-Daing missed a great chance two minutes from the end, and was jeered off the field at the new Quarua World Cup Hockey Center.

Grand master Mark's 2-1 defeat of Manky, who defeated Time To Bomb Saddam 2-0 in Farela earlier this week, puts them top of the group. Only a win will guarantee their qualification - a defeat will almost certainly see them out, while a draw would leave them sweating on a multitude of other results to determine their fate.

Manager Eua Zarb said 'It's essential we get attacking against Manky. It's our biggest ever match and we must play it as such. 19,000 fans will come, and we need to give them something to shout about. I believe we will.'

Salvaging a little pride, Tanah Burung picked up its first win against Daistallia, by a score of 4-1. Daistallia had already qualified and finishes with six points, and Tanah Burung with a final 3 points had alrady been eliminated. But at least we've been saved from a worst-in-the-world ranking! The other group playoff spot will go to the winner of the Voyger-Englishman match.

This is the third game of the Rejistanha'ny. They play against Spauldmerica Just after the beginning, Y tried to score once again, but unfotunately in vain. Spauldamerica attacked, but Could not get past the rejistanian defense. Suddently Len shot the puck forward, to Y back to Len, again Y and Goooaaaallll! The Rejistanha'ny has lost a lead once so they attacked as if there was no tomorrow. Short before the end of the game, Len shot to Hangatil, Hangatil to Y, Y to Len and Gooooaaaaallll! How did Len improve so much during the tournament? In the first game, he played like he never played before, in the second he didn't play and in the third he played like never before. (Short Pause) That is the end, Rejistania has won 2-0!!!!

Actually, it's not that simple. With only 24 teams, the top two AND four best third-placed teams go through.

I'm calculating the tables right now, but I've noticed Wildthings Realm are third in their group. Three points may or may not be enough - probably not though.

Coach On resigns

After the devastating first world cup participation, coach On stated to be 'fully responsible' for the 'horrible results'. He said literal: 'The first two games were not as we have wished them to be. After the first game, I should have reacted, but I didn't. This means, I am fully respnsible for the horrible results we archievd. There is no excuse for my failure so I save your time, by not trying to do so. I resign and make this place free for a better successor!' IC:
Halfassedstates secure qualification:

The Halfassedstates hockey side have progressed to the knockout round of this years WC.

A Sean Bendy goal was enough to see off the Weegies 1-0 in the first match of their competition.

Boyed by this result, the team recorded a magnificent 2-1 win over the Wildthings Realm in the second game. Again Bendy was the hero scoring both goals from penalty corners, while Iain Taylure was outstanding in goals, finally being beaten in the 60th minute by a wicked deflection.

The final group game saw Halfassed fall behind to an excellently worked move by Ur6, before a 68th minute goal from that man Bendy again, saw Halfassed get a deserved point from the match.

At the moment, it is unknown who the team will play in the next round!!

DAILY CROCODILE

The eyes of the country have been so focussed on our football World Cup qualification campaign (decided today in a match against The Belmore Family) that we neglected to notice that we've qualified for the finals of the field hockey World Cup.

People's representative for territorial defence & sports Mau Kiri Rai called the news "a pleasant surprise" before turning back to his in-depth study of Belmores and their friends and relations.

The first-round opponent is expected to be either God Squad, or somebody else.

I was going to use the four best third-place teams, but your idea is better as it removes the anomaly Tanah Burung going out with a better record than Little Jack, who would've gone through in their place.

Akabrland have qualified for the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over the tournament hosts. This time the masses in Akbarland hope that the team manage to reach the semis and beyond in compliance with the minimum pre-cup expectations. Overall the defense is the stingiest in the cup but question marks remain over the attack with only 3 goals scored from 4 matches.

Vixens Smash Opposition

Ravenspire's national field hockey team, in its first year of participation in the international World Cup -- and its first year of existence -- battled to a victory in the knockout round. The team faced Joshh, which had been a member of their qualifying group. The qualifying match had been a 1-1 draw, the lowest score achieved by the Vixens. The rematch, however, proved a different story.

An initial early goal appeared to indicate that this match might be a replay, but a quick offensive blitz equalized the score only minutes later. From that point on, it was the Vixens' game; despite valiant efforts on the parts of Joshh, the black-and-crimson-clad foxgirls intercepted and averted almost every attempt to move the game to Ravenspire's side of the field. They scored two further goals, bringing the final result to 3-1.

The players remain in high spirits in anticipation of their next match. "This is great," enthuses Mai Ishikawa, who was responsible for the Vixens' first goal of the match. "It's not liwalaru," -- a martially-oriented traditional game of the Kin, similar to field hockey in many ways, but with the exception that players may attack each other barehanded or with their sticks -- "but it's good that we're doing so well our first time out. And so far we've remembered not to seriously injure any of our opponents."

Surprised to find they had advanced to the knockout round, Tanah Burung's team played as if they had already been eliminated. They were churned up in fairly short order by the top team from group stages, God Squad, and made a rapid exit from the tournament. The news came on the same day that Tanah Burung narrowly missed qualifying for the football World Cup, adding to the general air mof gloom and misery among sports fans here. The playing of all songs by Queen has been banned for the day.

TIMWAY BATTLES TO 1-0 VICTORY OVER THE WEEGIES

Timway advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hockey World Cup after a hard fought game with The Weegies. Timway's stuanch defensive play continued, as they have only allowed two goals in four games. The offense hit its average of one goal per game, though coach Horatio Mendato would like to see that improve. It is still uncertain who the Tigers next oppponent will be.

and in sport to-day, the Halfassedstates football side lost 1-3 against Svecia in the final qualifying round of WC8. Thankfully for the team though, they had already qualified for the final 32 and the key players involved in the game all made it through without picking up an injury or suspension. (highlights of the match and the campaign so far will follow this program)

It was not such good news for the Halfassed hockey side however. The team playing in the second WC qualified top of their group section to face the unknown Voyager side. An early slip allowed Voyager to take the lead before Sean Bendy scored his and Halfassed's fifth goal of the campaign just before half-time. With the second half scoreless, the game went into extra-time.
The winner came just 5 minutes into the extra period, when a brilliant solo run and shot by the Voyager captain was cleared off the line illegally by the foot of sweeper Joe Soap. Soap was promptly sin-bined and the resultant penalty flick was hammered past Iain Taylure in the Halfassed goal. Try as they might, the Halfassed side couldn't recover and the team crashed out of the cup.

Thats it for the sport to-day, back to you Mike

With the elimination of The Belmore Family, Akbarland finds itself in the odd position of being the highest ranked nation still left. This, coupled with the football team's faiure to qualify for the world cup has increased the burden of expaction on the field hockey side's shoulders. The public fully expects the team to brush aside Manky (or whatever it is called.) and it seems will not accept anything less than to be champions.

OOC: Having said all this I not be surprised to get knocked out in the quarters.
07-10-2003, 23:26
Amazingly, 9th seeded Timway is now the second highest seed remaining, but unfortunately their paths would cross with higher seeded Akbarland in the semi-finals. However, Timway's defense should be able to carry the team through.
Ravenspire
08-10-2003, 00:01
Ravenspire is now set to face top seed Timway in the quarterfinals. An exciting game is expected, as the Vixens' wild offensive sorties, which have made the team the best scorers in the league, contrast against Timway's team's skilled defense, which is tied for best in the league.

Whichever team proves victorious will go on to face the winner of the Akbarland-Manky match in the semifinals.

TIMWAY'S DEFENSE PUSHES THEM THROUGH TO SEMI-FINALS

Timway's defense came through yet again today, producing their third shutout in the past four games. The final score was Timway 1 Ravenspire 0. Goalkeeper Fred Monsalvo continued to have an excellent cup, as he has now allowed a mere two goals in five games. The offense continues to do just enough, with Jack McNulty scoring the games only goal in the 19th minute. Timway then simply backed into their defensive shell and held off the desperate Ravenspire team for the rest of the game. Coach Horatio Mendato said that no lineup changes will occur, despite the team's struggling offense. "Winning is the most important thing, and if one goal per game is enough, then that's fine. I don't want to do anything to interfere with the chemistry on the defensive end." Next, the Tigers face either top remaining seed Akbarland or unseeded Manky. Also, with this win, the Tigers improve to an overall ranking of no worse than third in this cup (second if DePaul loses), while still a minimum of one point behind thus far undefeated God Squad.
08-10-2003, 20:44
Akbarland finally decided to do some scoring as they put four past Manky who in turn could only respond with two. The interesting thing was that the team more than doubled the number of goals scored so far as well as doubling the number conceded exactly. Reports are coming in that the team will face Timway, possesor of the meanest defence in the cup in the semi-finals.

TIMWAY DEFEATS DePAUL 3-0 FOR CUP!!!!

Timway played a solid and expired game today to defeat DePaul and win the second Field Hockey World Cup after finishing ninth in the inaugural event. Entering as the ninth seed, Timway hoped to get to the quarterfinals, and the semifinals if luck was on their side. But fortunate defeats of higher ranked teams put Timway on a relatively easy path to the quarterfinals, and their stellar defense allowed only four goals throughout both the group and knockout stages. The defense really came through for the Tigers, and the celebration is on in Timopolis tonight!
