FROM THE IMPERIAL COURT OF CHRIST PANTOCRATOR, NEW ROME
http://members.optusnet.com.au/a_marrington/ns/pantocratoria.jpg

To the eligible bachelors of all nations,

Her Imperial Highness the Princess Anna, our beloved eldest daughter, is fast approaching the age of majority. Princess Anna is an eloquent, intelligent, pious, modest, polite and beautiful young lady. She is seventeen, but will turn eighteen (the Pantocratorian age of majority) shortly (OOC: in this thread). Her native tongue is French, although she speaks English fluidly, and excels in Latin and ancient Greek. She is intensely interested in politics and history.

It is our desire that our daughter be soon married to an eligible foreign gentlemen of similar standing. Princess Anna has already received gifts and suits from the deposed King of Allemonde, the nephew of Uncle Noel, and Blood Peaks. We would like to invite each nation to send a suitor for our daughter's hand. They will be received here in the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator, in our capital of New Rome.

The Wm flight 237 was odd in deed. Not do to the raven jet fighters but the plane that is was escorting. A F-8F Bearcat. A plane of the WW2 era. The plane and it's escort made it uneventful to the New Rome airport. The bearcat came in for a landing which it handled very well. The Ravens meanwhile did one full circil then turned back toward their base.
Once the plane rolled to a stop, the engine shut off the canoppy was opened and the pilot got out. Slowly do to the injuries he had recived a month ago. He took off the flight helmet and tossed it back into the plane. He unziped the flight suit reveiling a nicely pressed military uniform.

Vahn
Age:19
Position: First son to Emperor Teros II
Hair: brown
Skin: Mixed (black and white parents)
Eyes: Brown
Height:6'1"
Weight:185lbs

Vahn is the first borne to Teros II but find little time to be a normal kid, the one thing he has wanted to do the most. He has been forced to go to one courting after another. In all the cases the women were not royal or half as beautiful as the Emperor makes this one out to be, but he expects little. He is strong and polite, although he is struggling with having to be constantly surronded by gaurds, royalty, or anybody else.

Vahn sits quitely as he stares out over the peaceful scene of clouds and water faintly below.
"My lord, we shall be arriving soon, is there anything you need?"
His royal gaurds were like annoying parents in their own rights.
"No." He said softly.
His escort jet bobed up in down in the air below him. Almost time.
Suddenly the clouds and water dissapeared and the jet began to decend.
Back to my royal duties. He thought. After a couple of minutes the plane came to a halt. He lifted picked himself up and got in order, two gaurds ahead two guards behind. They walked into the Airport.
"Uh sir." Said a small little man "No guns allowed."
Vahn immediatly gets in character and steps up.
"I am Vahn Winfield, Son of Teros Winfield II, ruler of Telliria. I have come here to seek the hand of Princess Anna. I believe that I am entitled to have gaurds come with, so if you'll excuse me and point me to the front of the building I will be on my way."
The poor airport worker is quite taken back and afraid as he looks up a the massive guards in their all red and black.
"Y-Yes Sir, I am sorry I had no idea! Please follow me, right this way then."
He leads them through a maze, or people and buisness, something Vahn finds exciting since he hasn't spent much time in a very big public area. The little man finally takes them to the outside were a Tellirian car is waiting. Two armed vehicles are ahead and two behind. Vahn gets in between his four gaurds and nods to his gaurd. The gaurd pulls out a stack of Tellirian money which should be good here for some amount. "For your kindness, I assume you will be able to find a money transfer station soon enough. Goodbye."
"T-Thank Y-You!"
He bows and then hurries off.
Another day in my life he thinks then sighs and sinks in to his seat. The car drives off and after a while he finds himself at the palace. "Good luck sir!" the car drive says. He nods gets out and stands in front of the beautiful palace. Princess ain't here, but oh well. He thinks to himself. "Here we go agian." he says to no one in particular.
The gaurds just smile.

Th Aelosian Dropship landed in the launching pad, and the transport hatches opened:

First a middle aged elf stepped down the ship. His silver hair contrasted with his tanned complexion. His face had a sad expression, but the look in his eyes was aloof and proud. His uniform showed that he was a high rank officer of the Aelosian Navy, with several medals hanging in his chest.

Then a young elven lad followed the first. This one was a slim, handsome boy, with the uniform of the Aelosian Navy cadets. His gaze was all around , as trying to absorb everything with his sight.

"Father, Is this the country where you want to live?", ask the young elf

"Yes, my son, they made me one of their knights. Now I'm a Pantocratorian knight, and I will pledge my loyalty to their emperor", the old elf was looking to the sky, with his eyes almost closed

The Emperor's 2nd Son, Jakesh, seeks to wed the Princess Anna of Pantocratoria. He is willing to marry but only on the condition that this would be a loving relationship, one where a true bond could exist. To his eyes, to betray a daughter to an unloving relationship would be dishonorable.

He sends a poem.

Anna, fair and honourable maid
whose beauty exceeds that of the greatest of flowers.
I wish unto you that your love is not paid
for by suitors who care more for nations and powers

You deserve better than the invisible cage
of a union that lacks both the love and the caring.
Lose not your grace to wither and age
and your love will not fall to fell deeds or waring.

Jakesh is 19 years old and composed it himself. He is considered one of the most wise and compassionate in Vadan and is very honourable. He is handsome and caring. What more could Pantocratoria ask for?

"Father, are you sure about this?" Prince Joseph asked as he finished packing his bag.

"Joseph," Emperor David IV said with infinite patience, "you know that I've been very tolerant in allowing you to lead your life as 'normally' as you wished upto this point. I've allowed you to enroll in the university of your choice and study what you want. But," the Emperor rose from the armchair in the corner of his son's room, "these days my mind is much occupied by the idea that I will not always be Emperor and it is time for my potential successors to begin preparing themselves for that day."

The Emperor gazed out of the window at the city below. "Either you or your aunt or your cousin will take the Sword after me and I want to make sure all of you are prepard. And learning how to function in diplomatic situations with other royal families is part of your duty."

David embraced his son. "So, yes, I am sure." He pulled back and looked at his son's face. Though he was 19 - almost a man - David still saw his child in that face. "Go to Pantocratoria. Meet the Princess and her father and the other suitors. Enjoy yourself. Nothing is written in stone." David chuckled. "She probably won't even like you, so don't worry about me forcing you to marry. And, you know that any final decision will be yours."

"Yes, Father."

"This way sir," a man said around his mid-twenties. His name was Narmer Obar, an assitant to Lady Akitsu Caze-sen.

"I'm coming," said Myrddin Caze-sen. Lady Akitsu was his mother. "Haven't flown in so long," he muttered as he looked around Louis International Airport.

"Yes," Narmer said. "If you'd follow me, sir, we have a car waiting for us to take us to the Imperial Court."

"I said I was coming, Obar," Myrddin said, with a sly look to the man.

Inside the car Narmer quizzed the young man about Pantocratoria.

"National animal?"

"Peacock," Myrddin replied.

"Motto?"

"Pour Dieu et Son Empire," He said, the words rolling off his tounge. "Must we continue with this? I'd rather think of other things." Narmer nodded in agreement. Myrddin fingered the edge of a box that sat next to him. "Do you think this will work?"

"What, you possibly marring a princess?"

"No, this," he said pointing to the box.

"Well, Daniel did try it, though he didn't get the lady. But from what I heard he's perfectly happy with whom he's with."

Myrddin sighed. "I guess I'm just anxious, that's all." He closed his eyes for the rest of the trip to the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator.

OOC: She is not the heir to the throne - His Imperial Highness the Prince Andreus, Despot of New Constantinople is the heir apparent, although the lack of a law of primogeniture means that he is only the assumed heir (the Emperor indicates his chosen heir by making him Despot of New Constantinople). She also has one more older brother, His Imperial Highness the Prince Constantine, Minister for Public Safety. She has two younger sisters, Her Imperial Highness the Princess Theodora, and Her Imperial Highness the Princess Zoë.

01-10-2003, 09:35
All guests are conducted to the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator, the magnificent palace in the centre of the sparkling city of New Rome. The palace is built in a renaissance "pseudo-classical" style. Lining the marble steps of the palace in full ceremonial uniform are the Varangian Guard, the personal regiment of the Emperor Andreus.

Their ceremonial uniform consists of long, Roman shields, bronze breastplates over a white conventional dress uniform, and heavy bearskins over that. They carry huge ceremonial axes, and slung over their shoulders are M-16 rifles. The Varangians are all over six-feet tall, and are all of Scandinavian descent. They are fanatically loyal and are, at least in theory as foreigners, above the machinations of Pantocratorian politics. They are the spiritual successors of the Praetorian Guard of ancient Rome, originally formed by the Emperors of Constantinople, from whom the Emperors of Pantocratoria are descended.

A herald dressed in the livery of the House of Bourbon-Comnenus-Paleaologus steps forward. He is the personal herald of Princess Anna.

"Honoured guests of His Most Catholic and Imperial Majesty the Emperor Andreus I, Her Imperial Highness the Princess Anna will receive you all shortly. However, no guards, nor weapons are to be taken into the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator - only Knights of the Order of the Pantocrator, members of the Varangian Guard and members of the Imperial family may carry weapons beyond this point." says the herald. "You are all permitted to bring your personal servants, pages, heralds, and whatever other members of your entourage you require, but no armed guards may enter this ancient court."

OOC: I will try to not ignore anybody, but I may ignore the "comedy candidates". You know who you are. Although I find Slutbum Wallah and others intensely humourous.

The herald at the top of the steps continues.

<<A parchment was delivered to the Pantocratorian government by diplomatic courier. It reads as follows:>>

Greetings on behalf of Thurisaz, High King of Wyrmberg, to the Pantocratorian government, and in particular to the beautiful Princess Anna.
My Lord wishes me to suggest his two sons as possible suitors.

His eldest son is named Perthro, and bears the title Prince of Armenez, a small land which has for centuries been under the control of Wyrmberg. The Prince has full sovereignty over said land, and further is heir to the throne of Wyrmberg upon his father's demise (may that day be long in the coming). A description of the Prince follows:

Name: Perthro von Wyrmberg
Age: 21
Height: 5'11"
Hair: Brown, short-cut
Eyes: Grey

The King's younger son (his third child, born after Princess Isa) is named Tharn and bears the title Lord High General of the Wyrmbergii Flying Corps, Protector of the Realm (although he tends to omit the "Protector of ther Realm" part). He tends to spend as little time at court as possible, and prefers to involve himself mainly in the millitary, leading wing of Drakeriders (who, it must be said, treat him more as a respected leader than as a Prince). A description follows:

Name: Tharn von Wyrmberg
Age: 18
Height: 5'10"
Eyes: Grey-Green
Hair: Blond, worn long (in the style known to the peoples of the Northern reaches of the realm as a "Metaler Style" - possibly it was once common among blacksmiths?)

His Highness wonders whether a meeting could be arranged between the Princess and one or both of of the Princes?

His Majesty asks permission to send Prince Tharn to meet with the Princess Anna. He believes that this would be the better match, as Tharn is closest in age to Anna.
However, it must be mentioned that Prince Tharn is, on principle, not greatly enamoured of arranged mariages, and has vowed only to marry for love, and never simply to further the interrests of the Realms.
It is greatly to be hoped that the Prince and Princess "hit it off" (as they say in the Western Provinces - I have no idea why they use this phrase, but it has become quite popular in court of late...)

The Act of Religious Sovereignty and the restricted lists of the Ministries of Public Safety and Cultural Development forbid the entry of a Yevonite monk into the Holy Empire of Pantocratoria. While we appreciate the offer, rest assured that Auron Fortitelli will find himself expelled immediately should he try to enter the Holy Empire of Pantocratoria's borders.

Would it be possible to organise a date for the meeting?

The Prince, along with his squad of Riders, would arrive by air, and so would require directions to a secluded airport in your nation. We ask that it is secluded as their mode of transport will be a little... let us say, unorthodox by many nations' standards, and we have no wish to cause alarm.

The main hall of the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator is a massive chamber. Huge marble pillars reach from the ceiling to the floor. In the centre of the room, under a huge decorated dome, is the imperial throne, in which sits the Emperor Andreus I in full regalia. The Emperor stands from his throne, reveiling the icon of the Emperor Constantine I on the back panel of the ancient chair.

His Most Catholic and Imperial Majesty the Emperor Andreus I

"Honoured guests, please, all of you, enter." says the Emperor. "Princess Anna will be with us shortly. First, allow me to introduce you to some of my other children."

"My second son, Prince Constantine, my Minister for Public Safety." says the Emperor as a nineteen year old man steps forward, dressed in a smart dinner suit, with a modest crown on his head. He nods respectfully to the guests.

"My youngest child, Princess Zoë." says the Emperor with a smile on his face as his thirteen year old daughter steps forward and curtsies perfectly.

"And... my second daughter, Theodora." says the Emperor, the smile gone from his face. A very attractive fifteen year old girl steps forward and curtsies gracefully, but the look on her face displays her obvious discomfort - like she is walking on eggshells.

"The Princess shall be with us at any minute now..." says the Emperor, glancing over his shoulder to a large door at the back of the chamber. The door opens, and a heavy-set middle-aged man with prominent scars on his face steps forward. It is Sir Constantine the Hardy, the Emperor's personal champion and close friend. He nods to the Emperor, as if indicating something.

"Very shortly in fact." the Emperor says as he returns his gaze to his guests. The Emperor's eyes pass over each suitor, and make each person over whom they pass feel a little uncomfortable with their penetrating stare.

The Prince and his squad of Drakeriders land in a secluded part of the palace grounds. While Tharn's wing-second Barl hurries of to ask for permission for the Riders to set up camp (grumbling to himself that Ranjist should have thought to ask, but what can you expect, he's a civilian after all...), the Prince and a companion enter the palace and, with the aide of some of the staff, make their way to the Throne Room. Barl is under orders to join them later.

"Your Highness," says the Emperor as Prince Tharn enters the chamber. "Welcome. The Princess Anna will be here at any moment."

The Emperor glances at Sir Constantine, who shrugs as if to say I don't know what's keeping her.
01-10-2003, 17:06
Tharn nods distantly to the Emperor, and begins looking around the Throne-Room at the other suitors (who all seem pretty quiet, for some reason). He also keeps his eyes open for a buffet table, or, better yet, a bar...

Seeing his wandering eyes, Princess Theodora takes a glass of champagne from a waitor and walks over to Prince Tharn.

"Your Highness, are you looking for something to drink?" she says, offering the glass to him.
01-10-2003, 17:21
Tharn snaps out of his reverie, and turns to face the young Princess. While he was not present when she was introduced, he knows her face from a dossier hastily compiled by the Intelligence Service before his departure.

"My thanks, Your Highness," he says with a smile, taking the proffered glass and taking a sip. "You are most kind."
01-10-2003, 17:32
The Vadanese Imperial Prince, Jakesh enters the room through the main entrance with only one bodyguard.

"Do not worry, one bodyguard like you is more that enough. I trust the Pantocratorians and hold them to their word, they seem honourable enough. Besides, you could probably outskill five of those Varangians all by yourself." Said the Prince to his Protector.

The guard said nothing, only clenched his sword in readyness, his muscles taut and ready to respond at the slightest threat.

"Beautiful room!" Exclaimed the Prince in fascination at the architecture and decorum.

The Prince walked over to the Princess Anna...

Theodora smiles happily, her playful eyes beaming at Tharn. She sways a little from side to side as she speaks, her long, flowing pink gown making the movement appear greater than in fact it is.

"You're most welcome, Your Highness. If there's anything else I could do for you," she says, "anything at all, let me know and I'll happily oblige."

The doors at the back of the chamber swing open, and twelve Varangian Guard enter the room, accompanying a beautiful young lady in a stunning white evening gown, wearing a diamond tiara.

She looks similar to Theodora, but is obviously the more mature of the two. Her face and eyes portray a quiet confidence lacking in her sister.

"Her Imperial Highness, the Princess Anna!" announces the herald.

The Princess approaches the throne, and curtsies deeply, before kissing her father once on each cheek. She turns to the suitors, and curtsies again.

"I am deeply honoured to meet you all." she says politely.

"Please, all of you, introduce yourselves, have a chat, get to know my daughter." says the Emperor as he stands. "In a little while, we'll hear Mass in the palace chapel, and after that, I hope you'll all join me here again for a celebratory feast. In the meantime, enjoy the champagne, and enjoy yourselves!"

With that, the Emperor leaves the chamber, accompanied by half a dozen Varangians and Sir Constantine the Hardy.
01-10-2003, 18:00
Tharn looks between Theodora and the recently-arrived Anna.

"You know, Your Highness, the resemblance between you and your sister is quite amazing," he says. "My brother and I are quite different to look at." Then, with a sigh: "Well, I suppose I had better go and "mingle" - my father always wants me to return from any foreign trip with information about representatives of other nations I encounter."
"You know," he adds with a smile, "sometimes I feel more like an Ambassador than a Prince and a General"
"Well, thankyou once again for the drink. I hope we can speak again later" - and, with a half-wave, he heads off to "meet and greet".

Theodora opens her mouth to say something as Prince Tharn leaves her, but says nothing. She instead looks down at the floor briefly, before looking back up at Tharn's back as he walks across the room.

"I hope we speak again later too." she says softly.

***

Prince Constantine leans against a nearby pillar, watching the suitors wander around talking amongst themselves, cautiously. He spots Zoë walking towards the guests, steps forward and grabs her by the elbow. The young Princess spins around.

"You're not going over there, Zoë. Why don't you run off and join father? Theodora's already in the thick of it, and I have no intention to watch the three of you. I only have two eyes. Now go." he says.

"But, if Theodora can stay, I should be able to as well!" Zoë says indignantly.

"Get out!" Constantine says, rolling his eyes as he spins his youngest sibling around towards the door through which the Emperor exited.

Princess Zoë sulks as she walks off. Sir Constantine rolls his eyes again, and turns his attention back to keeping an eye on his other two sisters.

***

Princess Anna smiles politely as she is introduced to Prince Tharn.

"Your Highness," she says respectfully, "Welcome to New Rome! I see you've already found our champagne - how do you find the rest of the city, or haven't you had the opportunity to see it yet?"

“Your Highness, you really should go over and introduce yourself. And give the Princess your gift.” Rev. Ambassador Jacob Donnelly, attired in a clerical collar under a white dinner jacket, with naval-style epaulets, nodded to his young charge and gestured towards the young Pantocratorian Princess.

“But,” Prince Joseph began before his father’s Ambassador cut him off with a look.

An obstinate teenager, Donnelly thought to himself, but then, all teenagers are. “Your Highness, just pretend it’s a party at your University and go and introduce yourself to a pretty girl. Diplomacy isn’t all that hard. It’s just being nice and a little outgoing. In these kinds of events, anyway,” he said with a smile.

But astronomy students don’t party, Joseph started to say, but he realized it would be no use. Instead, he straightened his blue army uniform – he was a bit of an iconoclast and had done army training instead of naval training – and glanced at the package he carried. According to Rev. Donnelly, Princess Anna had appreciated the gift he had brought of a first edition tome by Emperor Joshua I. So, Joseph had selected a first edition by Dr. Franklin Isgaard, the Empire’s first great scientist. He had written on mathematics, astronomy, theology and politics. He had the first observations of Neptune in 1845 and had been an early advocate for a written constitution, despite being a crown loyalist. He was a personal hero of the Prince.

With a deep breath, he walked towards the Princess. He stopped a few steps away and bowed deeply. “Your Highness, may I present myself? I am Prince Joseph of Excalbia, son of Emperor David IV.” He stood and found himself smiling at the Princess. “Please accept a small token of respect from Excalbia. It is one of my favorites…”

The Varangian bows respectfully as he takes the sword.

"You can be sure that this fine blade will be returned to you, sir." the Varangian says in Swedish as he leaves with it.

The herald at the top of the steps continues.

"After you have handed over any weapons to the Varangian Guard, you will be admitted to the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator, into the presence of His Most Catholic and Imperial Majesty the Emperor Andreus!" says the herald, and he turns to lead the way for any unarmed guests and their unarmed entourages.

"Well... New Rome was founded in 1467, and construction on the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator started then. It took over a century to complete, and was heavily influenced by some of the palaces back in Constantinople, St Peter's Basillica, and the style of ancient Roman buildings. In the late 1600s, a more baroque wing was added. It was designed to awe visitors with its magnificence, a compensation to the egos of my ancestors to help their prestige deal with the fact that they had lost Constantinople and couldn't get it back, try as they might." she smiles as she explains. ooc:good lord this is going to be hard to catch up on and stay caught up, did u know how much I read?!

Vahn enters the great palace. He looks around taking in all of the area with the eyes of a young general. Finally he moves up to where he hears voices. A guard moves in front of him as he is going to the room.

"Sir, your weapons please. And sir, no guards with you."

Vahn looks back at his guards, they sigh figuring this was going to happen.

"Just stay and wait with the other guards, come on men do you really think anything will happen to me.?"

Vahn pulls out his own sword. He feels it for a bit then give it to the guard.

"May I now pass?"

"Of course."

Vahn watches as the doors open and the room is displayed before him. He briskly moves forward and keeping his eyes on what is obviously the Princess. He gaze is strong and his steps are perfectly in line.

"What the hell am I getting myself into." he thought

He finally reaches the Princess.

"No gift and little information about whats happening!" he thinks as he sees the book.

He eyes now lock fully on the Princess. He stands with a heavy presence and waits for the conversation to stop so that he may address himself. He finally gets his chance. He puts his fist to where his heart would be, if he was not wearing the armor. It gives a slight metalic ting as it hits. He then proceeds to give a short bow.

"Princess Anna! I am Vahn, first son of Emperor Teros II."

He seems to relax now that the introduction is finished.

"If you don't mind me asking so...informally, but, what the hell did I miss? Excuse my language and behavior, its just that I don't get much time to myself, you know what I mean right?"

He seems to tense up again with the thought of screwing this up before he even got the chance.

"Me and my big mouth...." He thinks as he awaits a response.

Tharn listens with interest to the description first of the history of Pantocratoria, and then of the Knights Pantocrator.

Somewhere amidst the masses assembled Chong stands drinking a pint of champaign and holding a peacock underone arm.
The peacock seems bemused by events and curiously inspects the uniform of one of the Red Guards.

The political Officer from the 13th directorate, after handing out her leaflets (http://www.geocities.com/comradesubversive/zusayanunion.html), approaches Chong and gives him a box wrapped with a red ribbon:
"Here comrade, have his box. If she even comes near give it to her."

"Is it a bomb?" Chong asked.

"No comrade. It is full of red locusts"

Ah yes, though Chong, the national animal of the Zusayan Union.
He hoped She would not speak to him. He doubted the wonder of the gift in strange lands, but the peacock found the box even more interesting than the Red Guard's uniform...

Princess Anna curtsies politely and accepts the book.

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Your Highness." she says, smiling, before glancing at the book cover. "How fascinating! I'll be sure to read it, although I know nothing about mathematics."

She hands the book to a page, who takes it for later perusal.

"I'm afraid I've nothing for you or anyone else for that matter." she says. "Would you like some champagne? And are you an active member of the military, or is that charming uniform for show?"

She grins.

Joseph's face reddens slightly. "Well, it is required that all members of the Imperial family take military training. Most, like my father, opt for the navy. I think they just like the white uniforms," he grins slightly, "but, I wanted something different, so I took army training. I am qualified as a second lieutenant. But, I'm not on active duty. I've actually just started classes at the University of Landing."

Joseph takes a glass from a passing waiter.

"So, your Highness, how do you occupy your free time?"

Tharn watches as several of the Suitors offer up their gifts.
"Damn," he mutters to himself, "I knew I'd forget something, coming in such an all-fired hurry... going to a Diplomatic function and not bringing some token gift - stupid! That's basic diplomatic protocol."

He sighed. "Oh well, too late for that now..."
At that moment, Barl hurried in and whispered something into his General's ear (all Tharn's men thought of him as a General, rather than a Prince - which is how he prefered it, anyway).
As he listened, a smile slowly spread across Tharn's lips. Maybe he did have a gift to offer, after all...

Sir Constantine the Hardy escorts Count Kyrosal out of the hall.

Princess Anna struggles to remain composes as she is surrounded by suitors. She curtsies politely as she is introduced into new suitors, and accepts any gifts thrust into her hands.

"Honoured to meet you, sir... Thank you ever so much... Oh, hello..." she says, overwhelmed.

Princess Theodora approaches her.

"Anna are you OK?" she asks.

"Yes of course... thank you for the generous gift, oh it is beautiful... please Theodora leave me alone..." she says, turning between her sisters and the suitors. She opens the gift which was most recently shoved into her grip, and screams as a swarm of red locusts flutter about inside before she slams the lid shut again. "What the!"

Prince Constantine looks on, concerned. He speaks up.

"Whoa, whoa! Settle down, chaps! Calm down, sister." he says, stepping forward. "Now, let's just do this one at a time! Anna?"

Princess Anna is blushing and still breathing rapidly, her composure noticeably shaken by the locusts. She nods quietly.

"Hello Vahn, I'm Anna. I'm not sure if you missed anything really." she sounds a little intimidated by Vahn's imposing figure and manner. "My father welcomed you all, and invited us to join him for Mass in a few minutes. After Mass there'll be a feast in this hall."

She turns to Simon.

"Thankyou very much for this lovely broach, Simon." she says. "I love diamonds. But yes, we use knighthood as a means to recognise outstanding individuals, they're not a military order anymore."

She turns to Prince Hugo.

"Your Highness," she says respectfully. "The honour and pleasure is all mine. What a magnificent uniform you're wearing!"

She turns again to Tharn.

"The Knights of the Order of the Pantocrator haven't been real warriors for more than two hundred years, excepting Sir Constantine the Hardy of course. But the rest of the Order are just knights by virtue of their deeds - bravery in the Pantocratorian military, or outstanding charitable works, that sort of thing. My father uses knighthood to reward such men." she explains.

She turns again to Joseph.

"My brothers wear military uniforms all the time, Your Highness," she says, cheering a little as she glances at Prince Constantine, teasing him with her eyes, before quieting to a whisper, "but they've never actually trained as anything. I think you'd find most royalty is like that. But you've started at university? What are you studying? Erm... is that a Dregrukian chewing on your jacket?"

She turns to Chong.

"Erm... is that a peacock under your arm?" she asks, confused. "Wait, you're the one who gave me those locusts, aren't you!"

Prince Constantine speaks up as Princess Anna glares angrily at Chong.

"Mass! Please, everyone, join us for Mass. I'm told there'll be a special ceremony of some sort. Come sisters, honoured guests..." the Prince says as he leads on.

As the party leaves the chamber and proceeds through the halls, Prince Constantine walks alongside Princess Anna, trying to calm her down a little.

"What happened in there, I'm usually so... together." she whispers to him.

"You're just anxious. You'll settle down. You're doing fine." Constantine says, reassuringly.

Princess Theodora negotiates her way through the group to walk alongside Prince/General Tharn.

"Hello again!" she says, as if she found her way to his side by accident. "Have you ever been to Mass before?"

"Who was that?" whispers Anna, intrigued, to Prince Constantine, as the party turns the corner and enters the magnificent Chapel of Saint Constantine. The siblings dip their fingers in holy water and cross themselves as they lead the guests into the chapel.

The "chapel" is massive - bigger than most churches, and is built of marble. Greek-style iconography decorates the wall and ceiling. Already sitting in the Imperial family's box in the sanctum are the Emperor Andreus I and Princess Zoë. Prince Constantine, Princess Anna and Princess Theodora walk towards the stairs leading to the box, after januflecting. Constantine and Anna ascend the stairs and join their father and sister, but as Theodora tries to ascend the stairs, a priest grabs her by the arm and pulls her gently back off the stairs. The happy expression on Theodora's face is wiped blank and she blushes. Instead of joining her family in their box, she kneels down in front of the staircase. Zoë looks down from the Imperial box and pokes her tongue at Theodora when she thinks the Emperor isn't looking. Prince Constantine was looking, however, and he shoves his youngest sister gently to pull her back into line.

The Mass begins. It is said in French. After Communion, the Emperor descends from his box. Four Varangians carry in an ancient looking golden throne, and place it before the altar, and the Emperor sits in it. A herald steps forward with a scroll of vellum in his hand.

"Count Kyrosal Depilh, come forth and kneel before the throne." says the herald.

Sir Constantine the Hardy enters the chapel, followed by a group of squires, who carry a sword, a suit of armour, a shield, and spurs on velvet cushions. Sir Constantine leads the squires up to the altar, where the squires place the cushions on the table.

Kyrosal Depilh enters the chapel. He approaches the Emperor in his throne, januflects to the sacrament, and then kneels.

"Be it known to all men that I, Andreus Capet am minded to raise Kyrosal Depilh by virtue of his honour, loyalty, valour, and skill at arms, to the high rank of knighthood." says the herald to the assembled guests.

"Kyrosal Depilh, do you swear to acknowledge Emperor Andreus of Pantocratoria to be your true and lawful liege?" the herald asks the elf.

"I do swear it." answers Kyrosal.

"Do you swear fealty to Emperor Andreus of Pantocratoria, to defend and obey him until he depart the throne, or death shall take you?" asks the herald.

"I do swear it." answers Kyrosal.

The Emperor stands, and approaches the kneeling Kyrosal. Sir Constantine the Hardy hands the Emperor the sword from the altar.

"Let this be the last blow you receive without just recourse." says the Emperor before striking Kyrosal on the shoulder with the flat of the sword, hard enough to knock the elf back a bit. Kyrosal kneels before the Emperor again, and holds up his hands, palm to palm. The Emperor hands the sword back to Sir Constantine, before placing his hands over Kyrosal's hands.

"Repeat after me, 'I, Kyrosal Depilh, do solemnly swear and pledge my sword to Emperor Andreus of Pantocratoria, my liege, to defend and obey him until he depart the throne or death shall take me, and to uphold the honour of knighthood.'" says the herald to Kyrosal.

"I, Kyrosal Depilh, do solemnly swear and pledge my sword to Emperor Andreus of Pantocratoria, my liege, to defend and obey him until he depart the throne or death shall take me, and to uphold the honour of knighthood." repeats the elf.

"And I, for my part, do swear to defend and honour Kyrosal Deliph as befits a true knight." says the Emperor, as Sir Constantine the Hardy hands him the sword once more. The Emperor lightly taps Kyrosal on each shoulder with the sword.

"I dub thee Sir Kyrosal." says the Emperor. "Receive now your spurs, your right to suitable arms..."

Squires bring forth the spurs and the shield.

The Pantocratorian kitchen staff have outdone themselves - a magnificent feast has been prepared. The Emperor follows Bastianel's gaze to Anna, who looks up. Her gaze locks with Bastianel's and she sits still, as if mesmerised.

"Ah... another suitor, eh?" muses the Emperor. "You'll have to drop that Supreme God Eru nonsense if you're seeking my daughter's hand. We could baptise you tomorrow along with your father."

Anna's eyes stay locked on Bastianel's. Bastianel is the first elf she's ever met, and the meeting has obviously had a profound impact. Anna's brother, Prince Constantine, leans over her should and waves his hand in front of her eyes. Anna breaks her gaze as Constantine chuckles at her subsequent embarassment. "Hello Vahn, I'm Theodora." she says. "I'm don't know much history compared to my sister, but I know a little to try and answer you question. New Rome is the capital of the Holy Empire of Pantocratoria, although it is the second largest and oldest city. New Constantinople is older and much, much bigger. New Rome is much prettier though, the whole old quarter of the city was planned out from the day the first stone was laid, it wasn't built haphazardly like New Constantinople. There's no factories or docks or industry here in New Rome, so there aren't any working class people either. No, New Rome is where the richest Pantocratorians slap each other on the back and have competitions about whose house has more ionic columns, or marble statues, or bigger formal gardens."

The Princess rolls her eyes.

"It's boring." she says flatly to Vahn. Her eyes sparkle playfully as she continues. "But you don't look boring. Not at all. Why don't you tell me about yourself?"

Bowing deeply and kissing Anna's hands, Simon walks to the emperor. "M'lord, I ask your permission to court your daughter."

"Ah, a man who knows what he wants, and knows how to ask for it." says the Emperor, putting the peacock leg he was eating aside. He wipes his hands on a towel being held by a page as he continues. "Sir, before I make up my mind about whom my daughter will marry, I'd like to know a few things. Tell me sir, what are the circumstances of your birth and position in Roania? What do you stand to inherit? Would you live in Roania after the marriage or here in Pantocratoria? And so on. So, why not join me for desert, and talk it over with me? Please, sit down."

"Yes, M'lord. I am the son of Duke Leopold Darquis, and I stand to inherit around 50 miles of mountainous land full of resources, a castle, and some 10 million odd citizens living inside Fort Dericks. My current position? I am an Inquisitor in the Holy Roanian Inquisition, something roughly equivalent to the noble rank of knight. And I would live wherever you and my lord CRO Black would have me, and if you two are ambivalent then wherever Anna wants to live." Simon shrugs. "After the way my father treats me I'm ready for anything."

"I am in no way ambivalent about my children." says the Emperor. His eyes dart about the table, before settling on Theodora, speaking to Vahn. "Well... about some more than others, perhaps. In any case, I had planned to make Anna a minister in the Imperial Government when she reaches the age of majority. I'd prefer her to stay here most of the time, although of course you would travel back and forth between Pantocratoria and Roania as it suits you. If this arrangement is satisfactory to you, sir, then I would be most pleased to grant you permission to court my daughter. But you should be aware, that you will have some stiff competition, and I will consider every suit equally when I make my decision about my daughter's husband."

As the dinner wound down and the guests began to mingle, Joseph sought out Princess Anna. Though he had been reluctant, he had to admit that she was a charming young woman. Moving through the crowd of suitors, he found himself face to face with the Princess.

“Your Highness,” Joseph said with a surprisingly graceful bow, “if you have a moment, I’d love to resume our talk. I understand that there are many of us vying for your attention, but …” His face flushed red. “Um, anyway, have you started university? I wish you could visit Excalbia someday. The campus at the University of Landing is beautiful – green and lush. Also, it is right on the coast, so there is the beach as well...

"Though, as an astronomy student what I appreciate most is that it is in the countryside, so the entire night sky is ablaze with stars. Growing up in Citadel Excalbia, it was difficult to see all but the brightest stars…”

Joseph smiled embarrassedly. “I’m sorry, but I’m doing all the talking. I’d really like to hear about you and your interests…”

Across the chamber, Ambassador Rev. Jacob Donnelly approached Emperor Andreus’ throne. Rev. Donnelly bowed, then spoke quietly. “Your Majesty, if I might have a moment.” Donnelly reached into his jacket and removed a sealed envelope. “His Majesty, David IV, has sent this letter to you. From what I understand, he is concerned that his son, Prince Joseph, spends too much time concerned with science and mathematics and that he desires for the Prince to develop his diplomatic and political skills. So, he asks if there is if you can find a way to encourage him to remain at your court for a while, even if your daughter does not wish to entertain him as suitor, so that he can develop those skills.” The Reverend handed the letter, bearing the Emperor’s personal seal, to the Pantocratorian Emperor.

Count Kyrosal leave the Emperor for a moment "Excuse me, Your Highness, I have something to do". He approaches his son and hushes:

"Come on over here, I have something to tell you." The young elf turns to the princess and says "Excuse me, Princess Anna, I will leave you for a while"

They walks to a balcony nearby. "Tell me father, What you want with me?" says Bastianel.

"Are you trying to court the Princess?. You should ask me permission for that" says the old elf, visibly disturbed.

"I don't know father, I didn't came here with that purpose, but her eyes, and her face are so...atractive to me. I want to court her, and I know I need your permission for that. Please father, let me try it".

Kyrosal smiled, his son was like him when he was young, brash and impetous. He hadn't think about that the princess was a human, from a different world. "You have my blessings...But, Don't you think you should ask permission to her father too?. You're being rude and disrespectful, that's not the way I raised you"

"You're right father, you always are. I will ask permission to the Emperor"

"Don't worry, son, I will help you in any way I could. Remember anyway that if she doesn't like you, in your homeland many elven maidens are whispering your name right now."

"I know. But she likes me, I'm sure. And she's more interesting than any elven maiden"

Princess Anna looks a little embarrassed.

"No, I've not started university. And I never will." she says, pausing for a moment. "No member of the Imperial family has ever gone to university. All our tuition is private. We... we wouldn't fit in with other students. But, your university sounds lovely, in the countryside, under the stars..."

She smiles, thoughtfully.

"I should like to see it one day." she says. "As for my interests... I'm particularly interested in politics. I hope that my father makes me a minister when I turn 18 like he did for my brother Constantine. My eldest brother Andreus was made Despot of New Constantinople, of course, but I want to be a minister. I want to be in the thick of it, making decisions which matter. What about you? Do you have an interest in politics?"

OOC: That's fine. The priest didn't stop Theodora from going to Mass though, just from entering the sanctum with the rest of the Imperial family. She knelt down in front of it instead for the whole Mass, in front of where the other guests were sitting. For an explanation, refer to the National Factfile and/or the Visit Pantocratoria thread.

Seeing the throng of suitors surrounding the Princess Anna, Prince Tharn decided not to approach her immediately - "She must be feeling pretty crowded as it is", he thought to himself.

Instead, he decided to go and check on Barl, who he had sent to attend to events in the Wyrmbergii camp - events which, Tharn hoped, would provide him with a worthy gift for Anna -and for other members of her family, also.

OOC: I did post earlier that Barl - Tharn's second-in-command - went off to ask for permission for the Wyrmbergii Riders to set up camp in a secluded part of the grounds. For the moment I'll assume this request was granted, but if you'd rather they were somewhere else (i.e. if the request was denied), please post and I'll be happy to edit...

As Tharn heads for the exit, he passes Theodora and Vahn, and, in passing, snaps off a salute to Theodora (although the smile on his face makes the gesture one of freindship, removing it's usual millitary austerity). Then, making a mental note to continue his conversation with her later, he continues on his way out into the grounds, towards where his men have set up a temporary camp.

As he enters the camp, the men snap to attention, but he waves away such formalities and they continue with their tasks, while Tharn heads for the large Stable-tent at the centre of the camp.

It is around this tent that most of the camp's activity is centred, and to one anyone versed in the military routine of a Wyrmbergii camp it would be obvious that there was a lot more activity than usual.

Tharn pushed his way through the great door-flaps of the tent, his eyes quickly adjusting to the relative gloom withtin. At the centre of the tent, lying curled in a shallow depression she had excavated in the earth, lay a female Firedrake. In the hollow made by her curled form could be seen three round shapes...

Hurrying over to the two figures crouching beside her, Tharn cleared his throat softly to make himself known. The men looked round, then quickly jumped up and snapped to attention.

"No need for that!" Tharn admonished them. "Barl," he went on - for the right-hand man was none other - "you can fill me in. You," he added to the other man - who, by the concerned look in his eyes and the way he kept glancing at the curled Drake, he could see was her Rider - "attend to her - she'll need your company."

The man glanced gratefully at Tharn, then quickly returned to his scaled companion's side. Tharn's eyes followed him, then he turned back to Barl. "Now," he prompted, "suppose you tell me how this all came about..."

Barol glanced over at the Drake and her rider, then spoke quietly to Tharn.
"Well, General," he explained (like all his men, Barol used his military title), "it's like this. As you know young Tonn over there's transfer from another Wing was just recently accepted, and this was his first mission with us. It seems that his excitement and pride at the fact was such that his Thaneth - that's his Firedrake, of course - decided not to tell him she was ready to Clutch..."

"That's extraordinary!" exclaimed Tharn, his eyes widening. "Everyone knows Drakes are territorial, and their territory is confined to Wyrmberg - and the DrakeRealms! I've never heard of a Clutch being layed outside the Realms - ever!"

"But then," he added more thoughtfully, "I suppose it makes sense... The empathic bond between Rider and Firedrake is one of the strongest bonds there is, and Thaneth must have not wanted to disappoint Tonn. Still, I'd have thought..."
"Young Tonn was very keen to be on this mission, sir" interjected Barl. "He's only been a rider a year*, and he was... well, both honoured and surprised to be accepted into your Wing. He was desperate to do well and to impress you..."

"I already was impressed - by his performance in the Games last month. That's why I offered him a place in the Wing" answered Tharn. "Yet I must admit I am flattered - he must have been really keen for his emotion to have had this effect on Thaneth..." Then, slightly embarrased, he quickly got back to business. "We'll need to keep those eggs warm, or they'll never hatch, and I hate to think what effect that'd have on Taneth - or on Tonn's conscience, for that matter. We can't risk trying to get them back to the Caldera in Wyrmberg - there'd be no way of keeping them warm on the journey. No, I'll have to find out whether there are any spots of volcanic activity in Pantocratoria. If not, we'll just have to make do with hot ash. Tell the cooks that from now on all ash from the cooking fires comes straight here...."
"I doubt that will suffice, sir" interjected Barl.
"I know that, Barl, if you'd just let me finish..." he replied, reproachfully. "I was about to say that I'd ask if we could be provided with some extra wood or coal, when I enquired about volcanoes and such."
Barl looked embarrased. "Forgive me, sir, I didn't mean to question..."
Tharn smiled and grasped his Wingsecond's shoulder. "That's quite alright, old freind, I realise you're concerned - as are we all! - for the welfare of both Drake, Rider and eggs. But fear not - all will be well!"

And with that, he turned and hurried towards the door-flaps - giving Tonn a reassuring sile and a clap on the back as he passed, and out into the grounds, toward the Palace.

Tharn hurried into the Throne Room and then, not wanting to seem dispespectful or to disrupt any conversations, slowed his pace from its previous near-run to a mere fast walk.

Seeing that Princess Anna was still surrounded by a throng of suitors all vying for attention - and not relishing the prospect of trying to push his way through them ("that would certainly step on the toes of a few nations - in some cases quite literally" he thought with a grin) - he instead made his way towards where Princess Theodora and the Telirian, Vahn, where talking.

He reaches them, and, at an appropriate moment, clears his throat to make himself known.

(Nodding first to the Princess) Your Highness, (and then to Vahn) good Sir, I am loath to interrupt your conversation, however it is rather urgent.
(Then, turning to the Princess) Your majesty, I know this may seem rather an odd question, but I was wondering if you could tell me how I could go about obtaining a large quantity of firewood? Or coal for that matter - anything which can be burnt to produce ash and embers. I appreciate the strangeness of the request, but as I said, it is a little urgent...

"I don't understand, Your Highness..." says Princess Anna to Prince Joseph. "...why don't you think you have a chance to make a difference? You're the son of a great and powerful emperor, of all people you have the best chance to make a difference!"

Joseph looks down sheepishly. "Our system is different..." He looked back at Anna. "Our ministers are jointly appointed by the Emperor and the Chancellor, who controls a majority in the Imperial Senate. My father could not simply appoint me to a ministerial portfolio without any political background on my part. So, while I wait to someday be Emperor - if the Senate and the Council of Bishops concur with my father's will - I can either play the "diplomatic game" and attend functions and receptions and engage in political theatre at court or I can become involved in the daily grind of politics and build up an area of expertise outside the government."

Joseph looks off for second, then back at Anna. "Most of the imperial family have taken the former route. My father was one who took the latter. As a prince, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and developed a great deal of expertise in the areas of economic development, technology and military reform. Unfortunately, I just don't know if I'm as gifted at such things as my father. Numbers and equations and celestial objects have come much more naturally for me."

Joseph smiles. "Oh, and please call me Joseph. May I call you Anna, Your Highness?"

"Of course you may, Joseph." she says, smiling. "Our system is the same, the Emperor and the Chancellor pick their ministers together. The Chancellor is the leader of the Imperial Government, which has a majority in the Imperial Parliament. It just so happens that the Chancellor is my uncle, the Emperor's brother Basil, and that the Imperial Parliament is controlled by the United Christian Front, which happens to have 100% of the seats in the house. And it just so happens that elections are administered by the Church. And it just so happens that electoral integrity is ensured by the Church's Inquisition. Oh, and it just so happens that the UCF didn't feel the need to continue with elections after the last one..."

She pauses.

"Well... maybe our system is a little different in practice. But at least it preserves Imperial perogative." she grins. "Democracy's all well and good, but its quite unnecessary with an enlightened despot on the throne. Constantine I didn't answer to the Senate. Napoleon I didn't answer to the national assembly. And Andreus I doesn't answer to the Imperial Parliament. It's the order of things."

Princess Theodora looks a little taken aback.

"Erm... I'm not entirely sure about such things. But I'll get the officer who handles the palace fires.... just wait here, Your Highness." she says. She darts off out of the chamber.

A few minutes later she reenters with a court official.

"What a strange young lady," he thought to himself with a mixture of amusement and confusion. "A Royal Princess, fully aware of her position and comfortable among the rich and powerful. Yet ask her a question and she rushes off to find out as if she were a maid-servent given an order by a short-tempered Baron!"
Then, thinking back to the earlier Mass, he recalled the scene when Theodora had been prevented from joining her family, but made to kneel right at the front, in full view of all.
"And the strangest thing was that, after the initial shock when the Preist stopped her, she seemed neither angry, nor even surprised..." he mused. "There is a story there, I am sure of it... perhapse more a Saga, even... but how to read it? Yes... a most... interresting young lady..."

He was brought out of his reverie by the arrival of the court official.

Oh, and I also have another couple of request. The first is for information - are there, perchance, any semi-dormant volcanoes within - oh, about 20 minutes of here by fast car? (This was the best approximation he could come to for a 15-minute drakeflight)

My second request may not be necessary, depending on the answer to that question. However, if there are no such volcanoes here, I beg leave of the Impereal Household to construct a large - temporary, I might add - furnace within the camp His Highness was so gracious as to allow me to build...

Seeing the look of confusion on the official's face, he hurried on "I am afraid I cannot give a reason for these strange requests - suffice it to say that I hope, within a week and a half at most, to be able to produce three worthy gifts for the royal household...

Bastianel takes out his small ocarina (elven flute), and starts to play an ancient romantic melody in a corner of the room, first in a very low tone.

His father only smiled, his son's soul was naive and pure, and maybe he was in love with the strange human princess, but he was no fool, he was doing this for some reason, and he was one of the most talented musicians in their country...

The notes of the tune were soft as a refreshing breeze, as the sunlight rays in the dawn, and the story it was telling was a story of forgiveness and mercy. Bastianel raised his gaze, trying to find the Princess eyes one more time...

As he talks to the official, Tharn registers the Elf's music, and a corner of his mind considers it.

"Amazing," this sliver of mentation muses, such that Tharn hears it as a voice among his thoughts - his own voice, and yet, strangely, not. "So like the music of our Homelands, yet so different. The reasons for the differences are obvious, for it was written by minds of another race, yet why then the haunting similarities?

"The music of our people is inspired by our realms - by the mountain vistas, the wooded slopes, the quick-flowing streams, and the feel of the ancient forest around us, surrounding, enveloping, at once swallowing and protecting your soul until you are one with the land. That, then, is where our/my inspiration comes from, in such times - from the land itself.

"Could the same not, then, be true of these Elven-folk? Do they perchance come from a nation of forests and mountains, a land with a soul akin to that of ours/mine? I/we must remember to find out what we can about their homeland, should the opportunity arise..."

Then, its musings finished, the mind-state flowed, seperated, diffused, and became one with the rest of him. Tharn recognised instantly what had just happened - one of those rare instants of total clarity when the minds of Firedrake and Rider - constantly connected on some deep, subliminal level, and able to communicate amongst each-other if they made a conscious effort - were so in-tune that they ran in parallel, the resulting mind-state being neither one nor the other, but a whole that was greater than the parts.

Some Rider-Drake pairs found this communion in times of battle, when they felt as one the joy of the chase, the feel of adrenalin flowing through their veins. Some found it when hunting together, and yet others only when sleeping, when their dreams twined around each other and finaly merged.

For Tharn and Marol, these precious moments occured mainly at times such as the recently-departed mind-state had described - when one or both of them found themselves so caught up in the beauty of the events, or the landscape, around them that they became at some level a part of it. Across the empathic link the feeling would resonate from one to the other - in either direction, for both partners are of equal mental calibre, and of equal perception - and all at once the Twinning, as it was known, would occur.

During the Twinning - which in reality rarely lasts more than a second, but seems to stretch an eternity - both partners would continue to act as normal, for there is always a lag between thoughts and actions. But as the connection severs, the shock is often great enough to cause both parties to reel both mentaly and physicaly. The first time the pair had experienced it they had been looking down into a wooded gorge neither had visited before - Tharn had come very close to a nasty fall, being saved only by the fact that his leg had caught in a tree-root on the way down.

Thus the official was surprised to see Tharn, a half-second after he finished his requests, suddenly stagger slightly and put his hand to his head. However, almost as soon as it came the effect was gone, and Tharn - trying unsecessfuly to cover up his momentary discomposure - turned a questioning eye to the official and awaited a reply.

"Elf scum!" she spits out quietly to the priest accompanying her. "How dare they play their damned music in the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator? How dare they!"

"Your Highness, these are the Emperor's guests, as distasteful as they are." cautions the priest.

"I know, Father." she says. "But I can't allow our cultural purity to be compromised by the introduction of elven music!"

She clicks her fingers, and a Ministry of Cultural Development official in all black robes steps forward. The Princess whispers in his ear. The official walks across the hall and approaches Bastaniel.

With a look of disdain on his face, the official bows slightly.

The Cathedral of Christ Pantocrator, New Rome
http://members.optusnet.com.au/a_marrington/ns/cathedral.gif

Built in the style of the Hagia Sophia of Constantinople, the Cathedral of Christ Pantocrator only resembles the old Byzantine church on the outside. A few ancient icons on the inside speak to Pantocratoria's Eastern origins, but the rest of the interior is very much in the Western style. The Cathedral took a long time to complete, and the later interior work is much more influenced by the styles of Renaissance Rome than of Byzantine Constantinople.

The icon at the entrance of the Cathedral.

The huge dome of the Cathedral is decorated with an icon of Christ Pantocrator, looking down on the congregation below (linked due to massive size):

http://members.optusnet.com.au/a_marrington/ns/pantokrator.jpg

In the sanctum of the Cathedral is an elevated marble box for the Imperial Family, accessible via a grand staircase. The marble box features a massive bronze throne for the senior Emperor. About the sanctum there are another six such boxes, with smaller thrones, which aren't elevated quite as high. Each of these were originally built for co-emperors, but the practice of sharing Imperial power has long since died out.

A virtual army of priests run the Cathedral.

“Are you certain this is necessary? We aren’t even Catholic,” Joseph said straightening his tie.

“You’re correct, Your Highness,” Ambassador Rev. And,” he paused, “it is the polite and friendly thing to do.” Donnelly smiled. “As I recall, Your Highness, you were a bit nervous about last night as well, but I think you’ll agree that ‘polite and friendly’ served you very well. I dare say that I think you made a very favorable impression on Princess Anna and on Emperor Andreus.”

The young prince’s demeanor and posture changed. He turned excitedly towards the minister. “You really think you so, Reverend?”

Donnelly smiled. “Yes. And I like to think of myself as a keen observer of people. I also noticed that the Princess seemed to make a favorable impression on you, Your Highness.”

“Well,” Joseph turned somewhat sheepishly away from Donnelly, “she was not at all what I expected. She is very energetic and interesting and pretty and intelligent and so ambitious – but ambitious in a good way! She seems to really want to help people and make a difference in the world. She’s so unlike…”

“Unlike…,” Donnelly began, “other royals or…”

“Her aunt Princess Irene, for instance.”

“Ah, yes, this was the first time that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the Minister of Cultural Development. She is strong figure in the political structure here – like her or not, but do not underestimate her. Nonetheless, I admit that I would like to invite her to Excalbia just to see her reaction to our diverse people and to see that little vein on her forehead pop out were she to see Presiding Bishop Purins and Cardinal Walsh or Archbishop Friesz co-officiating at a State ceremony in Excalbia Cathedral… Well, let’s get going – we don’t want to be late!”

(Still last night):
Tharn notices the events concerning the Aelosian musician, and files them away for later consideration.

"When he says beyond these walls, I wonder whether he means this room, or the Palace grounds?" he wonders. "Perhapse at some point I could prevail upon the musician to play for my men at the encampment? That should annoy the Emperor's sister..."

Tharn had taken an instant disliking to Princess Irene...

Turning to the (OOC: despite my best efforts, still un-named!) official, he replied "I had assumed that someof your men would wish to supervise us - for security reasons, and so on - and that is of course perfectly acceptable. Any assistance they could give us would be most welcome. However, I would ask that I be allowed to swear them to secrecy as to the purpose of the furnace - at least, until I am ready to announce it myself...
There is, after all, always the possibility that we will fail and the Clutch will never... Tharn mentally shook himself to stop that unpleasant line of thought.
To the official: "I will ask my second-in-command, Barl, to discuss the arrangements with you. Now if you will excuse me, I must attend to other matters...

In response to Princess Theodora's question, he just gives her a grin and a sly wink. As he heads back towards the camp, though, he can't help wondering - should he have told her? What would her reaction have been? And, above all, why did he want to tell her? He had been relishing the prospect of providing the Royal Family with such a surprise, yet now he couldn't help wanting to let one of them in on the secret ahead of time. It was all most confusing...
07-10-2003, 13:34
(In the morning):
Tharn awoke in his tent - he had, of course, spent the night in the Encampment with his men. All in all he had slept little, spending most of his time in the stable-tent with Tonn and Thaneth, helping to keep the Clutch warm, periodically replacing the ash in the hollow where they lay with fresher, warmer embers from the cooking fires - and from some other fires which had been lit simply to meet the demands for fresh ash.

It would, of course, become much easier once the special furnace had been constructed, with the aid of the sworn-to-secrecy Pantocratorians.

Tharn quickly washed with cold water from the water-butt in the corner of his tent, then dressed in a clean uniform and headed into the Palace for Mass, followed by breakfast. Tharn was not a Catholic, but he went along anyway - "After all, when in New Rome..." he thought to himself with a wry smile.

OOC: I am assuming Mass has already occured? If so, this fits into the chronology somewhere before Mass.

IC:

The Cathedral of Christ Pantocrator is filled with sacred music of the most splendid and magnificent sort, with its choir consisting of the 300 best male singers in the Empire of 140 million souls, filling the air with music of almost indescrible beauty and majesty. The Varangian Guard form a guard of honour from the gates of the Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator all the way to the huge entrance of the greatest of all Pantocratorian churches. The Imperial Family walks at the head of the column of guests, leading the suitors and their entourages into the Cathedral.

The Emperor has a perculiar gleam in his eye this morning. Walking arm in arm with him in an extremely unusual display of public affection is Princess Anna, who looks positively glowing. Princess Zoë and Princess Theodora follow behind, Theodora's expression being noticeably gloomy. Prince Constantine follows not too far behind. The heir and eldest brother, Prince Andreus, Despot of New Constantinople, is away, attending tea with a potential bride. But Prince Constantine doesn't seem to miss the company his brother usually provides, not this morning. He hangs back a little bit as the Imperial Family approach the Cathedral's steps, so that he comes alongside his aunt Princess Irene, at the back of the Imperial party.

"I say, Your Highness, where is my uncle this morning?" asks Prince Constantine in a mischevious voice, referring to Prince Basil, the Emperor's younger brother, the Chancellor.

"I am not my brother's keeper." says Princess Irene, no doubt pleased with herself for the Biblical reference.

"So you've not had a chance to speak to the Chancellor this morning then?" Prince Constantine asks, nonchalantly.

Princess Irene glances sideways at him. Wretched little brat... she thinks to herself. She shakes her head.

"No, why?" she asks as the Imperial Family ascends the steps.

"Well... I thought he may have called... you know, to mention a new policy..." Prince Constantine says, shrugging his shoulders.

"What new policy? Do ministerial candidates now need to pass an IQ test before they're appointed?" she asks, annoyed.

"No, aunt," Prince Constantine says, relishing in Irene's insult, "He's reinstituted democracy."

REINSTITUTED DEMOCRACY????? Irene thinks to herself. She stops abruptly, and grabs Constantine by the elbow.

"Now isn't the time for games, nephew. What in the name of God do you mean?" she asks, her voice betraying her panic.

"Well, elections are no longer suspended, and in fact, one is coming up soon." Prince Constantine explains, innocently. His demeanour abruptly changes. "Your grab for power is over, aunt!"

Irene stands still, shocked into silence.

"But... the Emperor... would need to approve such a policy...." she manages to say.

"Aye, he would. And he did. He's as sick of your abuse of power as the rest of us." says Constantine. "Checkmate, my dear aunt."

Prince Constantine follows the rest of his family into the Cathedral. Princess Irene, knowing how deeply unpopular she was, trembled in fear at the idea of a new election. She finally ascends the step. As she crosses herself with holy water on entry into the Cathedral, however, the fear is swept from her face.

"No, nephew, not checkmate. Only check. I can get out of this yet. I still have... a bishop to play." she mutters to herself as she follows the Imperial Family towards its box.

The guests follow behind. They januflect and are seated underneath the dome, as the Imperial Family proceed forward to the sanctum at the front of the Cathedral. Princess Theodora hangs her head low as they approach the steps, and Princess Anna rubs her on the shoulder reassuringly. The Imperial Family januflects, and all of them but Princess Theodora rise to ascend the stairs and take their seats in their box. Princess Theodora remains, kneeling, in front of and apart from the congregation but not able to join her family. A priest walks to the base of the steps, and draws a purple velvet rope over the staircase, barring entry to anyone not already in the box.

***

The Mass is said in French, the national language of Pantocratoria, and is celebrated by Bishop Conomos, acting Archbishop of New Rome in the wake of the assassination of Cardinal Duras. After the Mass, Bishop Conomos invites Kyrosal and Bastaniel Delpihl to be baptised into the Catholic faith, as they indicated they would like to when they spoke to the Emperor the night before. As the Bishop invites the elves to be baptised, Princess Irene stands up, storms down the steps, pulls the purple rope aside, and storms out of the Cathedral. Even Princess Theodora has to scramble out of the way from her kneeling position. The priest who follows Irene around everywhere departs from his position at the altar to follow the Princess. The two only stop to januflect to the sacrament and to cross themselves with holy water before leaving the Cathedral. A Rolls Royce awaits them, which speeds off to the Ministry of Cultural Development as soon as they get in.

Bastianel attend to the mass, along with his father. His ocarina lies in his hand, now broken. His elven pride couldn't withstand the insult of the Princess Irene. He prayed all night in the humble chapel outside the castle, because his father told him that Jesucrist lived amongst the poor and the less favored, and not in the huge cathedrals and the luxuries of the rich. He thought that now he found his faith, and that Jesus was a fine man, worthy of being adored as the son of god. He could asked him for winning the favor of the human princess, but that would be a selfish act, asking for his own well being to a man who sacrificed everything for his race. He just asked for his people, his father, and for finding the strength to forgive Princess Irene for the insult, as Jesus forgave his enemies too.

He learned some of the christian songs back in Aelosia, a long time before, to honor the Pantocratorians with his voice. When the choir started to sing the Sanctus, the clear and soft voice of Bastianel joined the choir, praising the new lord of the young elf's soul. Maybe he couldn't play the flute, but he will sing the grace of Jesuchrist here, in the cathedral consecrated to him.

He steps forward, still singing, to receive his baptism, his soul happy because he finally found his true answer. He had been a catholic inside his heart all his life, and now he could be a catholic outside too. He didn't even saw Princess Irene leaving the cathedral, he was too happy to worry about those simple matters.

"Chong stop crying!" whispered Chou Lin the political officer.

They were kneeling at the back of the god-temple. Chong was upset.

"Chong, no one is going to shoot you in the back of the head. See every one kneels in this god-house, I Chou Lin kneel too to be diplomatic. No ones going to be shot."

This cheered Chong up no-end and he beemed a releaved big smile.

Chong watched Irene storm out and wondered what was happening.
The man at the front had found something and held it up - that impressed lots of people he noticed.

A Red Guard said he would report Chou Lin for making Chong a disciple of Opium. He began writing in his red book.

Chou Lin turned red. She put her head to the floor and made strange noises.
Chong wasnt sure if that was a part of the ceremony or she was exasperated.

Still, he reflected, Anna comrade-princess had said something about tests and Chong was looking forward to it...afterall he reckoned he could eat more locusts whilst tied up than any of these other people...

From a position towards the rear of the congregation, Tharn watched the Princess Irene storm out of the service as the Elves approached the alter.
Such hatred, he mused to himself, while continuing to go through the motions of the service. Such unreasoning anger, such bigotry. What could have caused her to despise these people so?

"I was wondering why the guest list styled you both as dictators... you are both after all, members of the aforementioned proletariat doing all that dictating..." the Emperor says, shooting a look at the official in charge of the guest lists. He continues with some humour in his voice. "Still, you're here now. So tell me... comrades... what do you think of us imperialists?"

But i would like to make it clear, that because i believe in free speech for all races. The princess will have the freedom of me, of you and everyone in this room today. She will be able to take any role she may want to, but i hope for her to be a vital contact between our to countries.

"Well said, Your Excellency." says the Emperor. "And, perhaps it may interest you to hear this, given that you are from a democratic country. I have ordered that elections be held once again. We had suspended them for some time as a... cost saving measure. But no more!"

Prince Constantine looked pleased. He had convinced the Emperor to reinstate elections by getting the Chancellor and half of the Imperial Cabinet on-board with the idea.

At that moment, the chamber doors sweep open, and Princess Irene, dressed in her usual severe black gown, flanked by the priest who follows her everywhere, enter the chamber.

"Yes, no more fiscal responsibility for this government, eh Your Majesty?" she says, and curtsies to the throne.

She walks around the table slowly, keeping her eyes on Prince Constantine and Prince Basil, the Emperor's brother, as she approaches the throne.

"While you've been entertaining His Majesty's guests, I've been busy." she says slowly. She reaches the table where Basil and Constantine sit, and claps her hands once.

Through the open chamber doors pour members of the Imperial Parliament. Dozens and dozens and dozens of them - over half of the Imperial Parliament's 540 members. The first amongst them, Treasurer Isaac Comnenus, carries the flag of the United Christian Front, the party which has governed the Empire with a 100% majority since the last election a few years ago. Comnenus tosses the flag to the floor of the chamber, and treads on it.

A deathly pale look sweeps over Prince Basil's face.

"Sister... what.... what have you done?" he stammers breathlessly.

"Let me introduce you to the sitting members of the Pantocratoria First Party... the majority party of the Imperial Parliament of the Holy Empire of Pantocratoria." she says.

She turns to the Emperor.

"Your Most Catholic and Imperial Majesty," she says, curtsying again. "The elections aren't for another 30 days. In the meantime, the Pantocratoria First Party has a majority in the Imperial Parliament. By the right of the aforementioned majority, I ask for Your Majesty's permission to form a new government."

The Emperor looks at his brother and then his sister.

"You can't be seriously considering this!" protests Prince Basil.

"She has a majority, Basil!" barks the Emperor. He curls his upper lip as he frowns, before finally speaking again.

"Your Highness," he says, addressing Princess Irene. "we grant our permission. You may form a new Imperial Government immediately, to act as the caretaker government until the general election in 30 days."

Prince Basil stands up, pulls the golden chancellor's necklace off from his neck, and throws it to the ground, glaring at his brother. He storms out of the palace, followed by Prince Constantine.

A herald steps forward, retrieving the necklace. He hands it to the Emperor. Princess Irene kneels before the throne, as the Emperor hangs the necklace around her neck.

"HER IMPERIAL HIGHNESS THE CHANCELLOR THE PRINCESS IRENE CAPET!" pronounces the herald at the top of his lungs.

"I grant you my leave now, Chancellor." says the Emperor, abruptly. Princess Irene curtsies again.

"God save Your Majesty!" she says in salute to the Emperor, and leaves along with her party at once.

"Son, It looks like we're in troubles", says the old Count Kyrosal, his face overcome with worry about how this unfortunate course of events could affect him and his son. "I'm ready to die for my beliefs, for all that I had fought for, but you should escape now, you're too young to die here, far away from your homeland and without knowing love and life"

Bastianel looks at his father with a strange look. "No, father, I'm not going to flee like a coward leaving you behind. I'll stay here, no matter what happens"

"You will return to Aelosia and warn the authorities that Pantocratoria it's no longer a friendly country to the elves, and that's an order from your father and from the head of your house". The face of the old elf was hard, and his voice was bitter and angry.

"Then I'm no longer under your command father. I don't care. I will stay here to the end, whatever it must be". The younger elf turns around and leaves the place as fast as he can.

You will die here if you stay, Bastianel. I can't protect you any longer. God, don't let me presence the death of my son, I beg you, save him from those who hates us, says the old elf to himself.

Before Tharn could answer the Princess Theodora - whether the answer would have been an explanation or an excuse for not explaining, even he could not have said - the Princess Irene's entry, and the events subsequent to it, rather interrupted his train of thoughts.
"This does not look good," he muttered under his breath, unaware that he was thinking out loud and that those nearby could hear him. "Especially for the Aelosians... I wonder whether they would accept an offer to dwell for a while in the Ecampment? I'll have to make the offer - purely as an act of courtesy, of course, an invitation to freinds - and one totally unrelated to recent events..."

Realising that he had been speaking out loud, Tharn quickly turned back to the Princess Theodora.
"I am sorry, you were asking about the furnace? Well, its purpose is supposed to be a surprise, and there are too many sets of ears around this table for any conversation to be truly private..."

New Imperial Cabinet
Imperial Daily

HIH the Chancellor the Princess Irene has submitted her selections for the new Imperial Cabinet for confirmation by the Emperor. The Emperor is expected to officially appoint the Chancellor's selections in the evening.

Retaining the office of Treasurer is Isaac Comnenus, who has also been appointed Deputy Chancellor. Also retaining their offices are the Ministers for Health, Immigration, and Defence.

HIH the Prince Constantine has lost the Ministry of Public Safety to Guillame Armenian. Guillame Armenian is the relatively unknown Member for Louisville.

The new Minister for Cultural Development is Jean Gallipolitano, the Member for New Morea.

Sir Michael Phocas is no longer the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the portfolio being passed to Sir Jacques Antoniou. Sir Michael Phocas has been recalled from Aelosia immediately.

12 unportfolioed cabinet members have been replaced. The new Imperial Cabinet entirely consists of Pantocratoria First Party members.

In the offices of the Minister of State on the 10th floor of the New Ministry building in Citadel Excalbia:

Lord James Reynolds stroked his gray beard as he leaned back in the comfortable armchair overlooking the city. “Things certainly seem to be deteriorating on all fronts, don’t they Albert?”

Albert Cummings, the new Minister of State, eyed the Director of Imperial Intelligence. How can he look so calm, he wondered. “Well, Lord James, there certainly seems to be something afoot. And, our Ambassador in New Rome is waiting for instructions. What should we tell him?”

Lord Reynolds gazed out at the quiet streets of the Government sector below and at the reassuring bulk of Excalbia Castle on the cliffs beyond. “Tell him what we know – Cardinal Duras was poisoned; our sources in Rome tells us that the Roanian Cardinal, Richelieu, has exerted his exceptional influence to elevate a little-known Pantocratorian bishop – whom it seems he has never met – to Archbishop of New Rome and is pushing further to make him a Cardinal; and that our analysts suspect foreign influence in Princess Irene’s constitutional coup. And, between Richelieu and the snippet of conversation that our Ambassador overheard from the Roanian Ambassador, I’ll only give him one guess as to we think is behind Irene.”

Cummings nodded. “Are we proposing any course of action at this time?”

“No,” Reynolds resumed stroking his beard, “we think we know a lot, but we know very little for certain, so it is too early to act on it. Do advise the Ambassador to keep his eyes open and watch his back.”

“Should we provide this information to Emperor Andreus?”

“No, it is too early. We do not want to look like interlopers. The moment anything is confirmed or if the situation grows more serious, then we will certainly share this with our allies.”

“Nevertheless, I shall instruct him to remind the Emperor that we feel our bonds of friendship are strong and rooted in the throne and assure him that they can withstand any change of government.”

Reynolds nodded. Now onto the Dominion and the looming war...

However, as Lord James said, they are just theories at the moment, hence their reluctance to say anything to Andreus or to act on them. We'll see what the next chapter reveals. And what assumptions that brings. BTW, if anyone is interested the war Lord James mentions is looming here: http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=66633; Pantocratoria already has observers involved and I wouldn't mind if anyone else wanted to intervene and try to manipulate things to their advantage.)
