Mysterious Oil Tanker Disappearance

Oil Tanker Midshire In Distress

Captain Patrick Layhee looked at the charts. He'd be at the Atolls in maybe a week, the Midshire tanker having already been on the seas for a week and a half. The marvelous carrier was an astounding 1,721 ft in length, a massive oil tanker that could withstand the worst that mother nature could offer up. The weather had been fine for the past 10 days, the sea's swells hardly reaching 10 ft.

The Midshire had a fine crew, all experienced sailors that had prior experience on Multinational Shipping's older vessels. The crew was now eating dinner in the mess when Layhee came down the steps. "Guys, weather's been good so far, but we got bad weather ahead of us." "Typhoon?" one said to his left. "I can't tell you right now, but what I do want is for you to be on your feet should anything happen," he said.

"XO we just got this on the weather fax, typhoon, nasty could see waves 60ft plus."

"Good job it doesnt affect us then."

"Well we picked this up, message from MV Midshire VLCC reporiting course and heading."

"They Need help?"

"Not at the moment sir but shall we change course to intersect them."

"Yeah, if that goes down that will be one hell of a noil spill."

"Aye sir, changing course to 065 speed 14, depth 120 feet."

OOC: Kahtan, you can enter soon here.

Captain Layhee woke up to swells near 70-some ft tall; and a weather report that two typhoons were moving into the area ahead of them. "Engine room, change course direction 60 degrees to the left, seems we've got even rougher waters up ahead. "Course change 60 degrees left, aye sir," replied the voice. With any luck Layhee could avoid the storm.

"Captain, the typhoon is steadily getting worse. Shore stations are saying it's shaping up to be the worst one in years."
"Heave to, reduce speed to minimum necessary for station keeping. Order the crew to secure the ship for rough weather. And God help anyone else stuck in this XO."

"Sir," Midshire's navigator said addressing the Captain, "those two typhoons seem to be converging right above us."
"Is there anything we can do?" Layhee asked, a hint of worry in his voice.
"Hold on damn tight," the navigator replied.

"Captain, these swells are a good 90 ft tall. If we don't get out of this storm...well, i'm not going to get into that, but we need to find a way out of this huge storm before the Midshire decides it can't take this beating anymore," the navigator reported in the wee hours of the morning.

Seabrough Times, 6:03 AM OST: The storm 230 miles offshore Oglethorpia's western coast has intensified greatly. Dubbed Hurricane Jack, weathermen all over report that it is believed two typhoons have combined moving in a southwesterly direction. Coast Guard officials warn people to not go out onto the seas, or be very cautious about it.

EDIT: OOC: Grimdale, Kahtan you'll soon be able to enter, though the typhoon will make things pretty tough as far as getting around that area.

"Captain, radar reports an extremely large ship in the area, we suspect it may be the Multinational Shipping vessel Midshire. She's carrying a full load of crude oil."

"What the Hell are they doing out in this storm? If she goes down it will the largest spill this coast has ever seen. Radio them that we are in the area and are standing by should they need assistance. And order the engine room to stand by for a high speed bad weather run."

"Aye, aye Captain."

Outside, the storm continued to grow in fury.

"Captain, we're drifing further away from the coast," the navigator reported.
"Good," Layhee replied.
"Not good, we're trapped in the storm and have to go where it goes."
The swells outside were at least a hundred feet in height and every one that passed threatened to overturn the great tanker, it's length floating awkwardly with each passing wake. The strain of the tanker's superstructure seemed faint, but it was there. No one knew how much of it the ship could take.

Patrick Layhee's radio spit out chatter for a breif second, before hearing a message from a Grimdale vessel. "Werewolf, our current position is-" the radio cut out before Layhee could fully report the Midshire's position. The vessel's last transmission was "aist...de..hurric...jack" then another voice saying "ass."

World's largest oil tanker missing

The world's largest oil tanker, the Midshire has been missing for two days, following reports of Hurricane Jack forming from two typhoons two-hundred miles off Oglethorpia's western coast. The Midshire was expected to take seventeen days to reach the Oglethorpian Atolls where it would deliver it's massive load of oil before it went missing two days ago, eleven days into it's journey to the islands. Officials have the last reported position of the vessel and will launch inquiries into it's mysterious disappearence after Hurricane Jack calms down.
03-09-2003, 02:08
MIDSHIRE, COME IN. COME IN MIDSHIRE. MIDSHIRE, PLEASE RESPOND. The call went out again and again over the radio, in a desperate but ultimately futile attempt to reestablish contact with the stricken vessel.

"Radar, do you still have them?"
"Aye Captain, but they're drifting away at at least ten knots to the Northwest."

"Engine room, give me everything she'll take in this weather. Helmsman, set a course for the Midshire."

Under the impudous of 216,000 hp and twin screws the Werewolf began to fight against the storm. It's bow rising up to nearly the vertical as it climbed 100ft waves before crashing back down only to start the whole process all over again. She rolled from side to side, only her advanced stabilizer system keeping her from rolling completely over.

"Sir, the Midshire is out there somewhere, and we can't get out there, not with those swells and those winds. We're talking hundred-foot swells and ninety mile per hour winds," said William Lederer.
"Dammit," replied Mike Smith, also on duty that night at command.
"We can try to message the Werewolf, the Grimdale vessel out there."
"Why not the Midshire?"
"Smith, the Midshire has disappeared completely. Nothing's came back for six hours. It's a massive vessel so i'm sure it's out there but we can't communicate with it."
"Fine, go ahead and message the Werewolf."
Lederer picked up the radio. "WEREWOLF, THIS IS OGLETHORPIAN COAST GUARD COMMAND. DO YOU READ? THE SWELLS ARE 100 FT PLUS. MAKE ALL DUE EFFORT TO ESCAPE THE STORM," Lederer said, knowing that even a naval vessel would have a hard time battling those swells.
03-09-2003, 02:41
"Captain, we're gaining on the Midshire, but the ship can't take much more of this pounding."

"She'll take it, she has to. There are people on that ship who need help, we are bound by the law of the sea to come to their aid. So we'll drive her until she goes under if need be, am I understood?"

"Aye sir!" The XO said, startled by the intinsity of the emotion expressed by his captain."

"Turn on all the lights, even if we can't contact them, maybe they'll see us and know that help is on the way. There are men out there who must be going through pure Hell, and we're the only hope they have."

"Captain, we're recieving a message from the Oglethorpian Coast Guard. They're advising us to try and escape the storm."

"Signal them that we are in pusuit of the Midshire, they are adrift and that we intend to put a line aboard and commence towing operations if at all possible."

"CAPTAIN, I DIDN'T THINK IT POSSIBLE, BUT WE'RE TAKING ON WATER," a crewman reported.
"WHAT?" Captain Layhee screamed back.
"WE'RE TAKING ON WATER!," he shouted back.
"SON OF A BI-" Layhee said, before knocked over as the Midshire crossed another swell awkwardly.
"SIR, I THINK THERE'S ANOTHER VESSEL OUT THERE!," the crewman quickly said again.
"THEY'RE CRAZY!," Layhee said, the ship maybe half a mile from their position. Then Layhee was reminded of how bad the situation was, the horrible structual straining sound heard again.
03-09-2003, 03:05
"Captain, sonar is all gone to crap in this weather, but I think they're hull is starting to break up."

"Helmsman, bring us along side. Make this signal by blinker, AM COMING TO YOUR ASSISTANCE, DO YOU WISH TO ABANDON OR TRY TO SAVE?"

"Aye Captain."

"And get ready to throw a line to them, if they come over it's going to be in a rush."

"SOMEONE'S SIGNALING!," a crewmember shouted, before sliding down some 20 feet as the tanker jerked awkwardly in the swells.
"HAND ME THAT FLASHLIGHT," Layhee shouted as he began signaling "WILL ABANDON" to the Werewolf on their side. Layhee made preparations to throw a few ropes down to the vessel in hopes of saving some of his crew members.
03-09-2003, 03:29
"Captain, they're signaling that they will abandon."

"Helmsman, bring us alongside as close as you can. Chief, deploy the pontoon bumpers over the side in case we collide. Signal back that we are moving in to attempt removal of personnel."

A chorus of Aye Ayes came back as the ship burst into energetic activity. The time of reckoning was upon the two ships, one dying, her keel broken, the other one vitally alive and fighting the elements to save what could be saved. And all hinged upon one man, and that man stared out the bridge windscreen, as if sheer force of will could cause the storm to part before him.
03-09-2003, 03:46
As the two ships heaved side by side attempt after attempt was made to throw a line aboard the Midshire until finally one was put aboard. Straining again and again to nearly the breaking point the crew of the Midshire began the deadly climb down the rope, but after only a couple of the Midshire's crew had made it the Werewolf's decks the rope snapped, sending several still hanging on into the icy could waters.

Captain Layhee shuddered, looking away watching two of his crewmen plunge 100 feet into the icy cold water. Suddenly he and half a dozen other crewmen were knocked over violently as the Midshire violently listed to the right hitting the Werewolf with great force, then learching forward sliding the helpless crew down the massive deck. The oil tanker began to bend, fold in the upper third of the vessel as the swells tossed and turned the crew taken by surprise on her deck.

The listing back half soon began taking on water, sliding two more of the Midshire's crew into the frigid waters as her fore portion broke, sliding up to a 30 degree angle and seeming to float there, tossing about in the massive swells that had broken her. The remaining two-thirds of the Midshire fully listed onto her starboard side, the rest of her crew not in the cabin being thrown from the deck.

Some nine men were cast into the water, helpless.

Captain Layhee floated lifeless. The color had been sucked out of him, the -10 degree fahrenheit water killing him in less than two hours. The other men were clinging on to life, hypothermia soon to get the best of them. The Midshire was in two pieces, tossed about by hundred-foot swells of Hurricane Jack. What sailors were in the cabin were unconcious or thrown out of it's side windows. Her fore third finally tilted up to a 60 degree angle, slowly submerging into the icy depths, and even amid the massive swells the fore bow sank into the depths below amid a patch of crude.

The floating two-thirds of the Midshire, completely on her starboard side soon sank in that position before being violently ripped up vertically, several life rafts being ripped off of her sides, marked with her name, soon sinking as the cabin soon disappeared beneath the waves. The swells showed the last traces of the Midshire but it was well on it's way to the sea bottom. The screams of the crew still alive within her cabin were soon silenced as the water rushed in, sealing off the last traces of oxygen.

She began to spin violently, doubling over, the sea finally ending the crewmen's agony. As she fell to 6,000 feet the sea began to crush the Midshire, her hull dented by the great forces of the ocean, sqeezing out the toxic crude within her belly. The aft of the Midshire fell to the sea bottom, surrounded by the disfigured chunks of her that were broken off, only a few hundred feet from her fore section.

The Midshire had sunk to the bottom of the Western Oglethorpia Sea.

Suddenly as the line parted the Midshire slammed into the Werewolf. Buckling hull plates as if they were made of cardboard.
"Captain, heavy flooding reported in compartments I-13 through I-34!"
"Get damage control teams down there immediately! Helmsman, pull us away from the Midshire."

As unbeleivibly the stroms fury continued to increase the Werewolf was forced to ver off from the Midshire in a desperate attempt to save it's own life. Hull down and listing to port she struggled to stay above the waves. Helplessly Captain Marcus O'Brian was forced to watch as the Midshire's few remaining lights steadily disappeared under the storms onslaught. He knew there might be men in the water, but the damage to his own ship ment that nothing could be done. His mind now had to turn to the task of saving his own ship.

"Helmsman, bring us into the wind, begin station keeping proceedures. XO what's the report on the damage?"

"We lost three people and five more are seroiusly injured. That entire section of the ship has been buckled in almost half a foot with numorous leaks and compartments I-18 and I-23 have been breached and are completely flooded. The Chief says that it will be at least 15 hrs before he can plug all the leaks and begin emptying the compartments. However I-18 and I-23 will require the services of a dry dock. The stabilizer system has been rendered inoperatible. And we have water contaimination in oil bunkers 5 through 9."

"Damn, all right then, radio the Oglethorpian Coast Guard, tell them we managed to rescue two survivors from the Midshire but in the process have sustained serious damage that has prevented further resuce attempts. The Midshire has gone down at these coordinates, probability of massive oil spill is high, will attempt to maintain station and moniter the situation. And now comes the hardest part."

"What's that Captain?"

"Waiting."

And outside the storm continued to rage, showing no signs of abating.

Ten Coast Guard Cutters were docked, CG-10 thru CG-20. "CG-11 and 12, Command's given the order. We're already taking a risk by sending two ships into Hurricane Jack, so if you do find them be quick with the whole rescuing schtick." Each boat's 50-man crew scrambled to get things ready, to get the 200 ft long boats out there to possibly aid those in distress.

CG-11 and CG-12 headed out towards Hurricane Jack, 260 miles offshore. The Midshire had been "missing" for a day already, and word was that neither the government or Multinational Shipping were concerned yet.

Also send a message to the 3rd Fleet, advise them of the circumstances and request assistance in search and rescue operations once the storm has passed."

"Aye Captain."

"Helmsman, how are we doing in tracking the oil spill?"

"We're managing sir, but only just, with the stabilizer system inoperatible our manuverablity and speed have been greatly reduced in this weather."

"Do your best, if we lose track of it who knows where it might end up before it's found again."

Just then the ships Doctor called up to the Bridge. "Captain, could you spare a few minutes to come down here, one of the Midshires survivors is insisting that he speak to you."

Captain Gary Findlay was in command of CG-11 and his navigator had just given him the latest weather report. "One more thing," the navigator said.

"Transmission from the Werewolf," the man replied.
"What's it say?"
"Two survivors, swells of 100+ plus and a warning not to enter the storm if we can help it."

(ooc: Is it ok for me to play a minor support roll? If not, ignore this.)

High in the sky, a plane flew.

To be more specific, it was a Rattlesnake, normally an extremely fast fighter, but this one has no weaponry and more armor, with a specialized sonar and radar: A surveilance/weather plane. It viewed the ground, and saw a giant blot.

"... Home base, the slick has been located."

"Roger. Report co-ordinates?"

"Section 1-19."

"Good. Report back before you run into some nasty weather."

Jon Gruden, acting Minister of Defence, and thus the Navy (Who controlled that Rattlesnake), turned off the radio, and switched frequency to the Oglethorpian coast guard.

"Closest naval port...that'd probably be in Tropoli, Southern Oglethorpia."

Tripoli Harbor Naval Base
8:34 PM OST, Tripoli, Southern Oglethorpia

Tripoli Harbor Naval Base had several dry docks, only one tied up with a Reefshark-class SSN that had suffered some damage to it's underside after brashly navigating through some shallow water. "Make drydock 1 ready for use, we've got a damaged vessel from Grimdale coming in," came the order.

OOC: Not a problem with me but you'll have to ask Oglethorpia.

"This is Admiral Jack Walker in command of the 3rd fleet, we are here to render you whatever assistance you may need. I have dispatched the Werewolf to Tripoli for repairs and I thank you for the use of your port."

Slowly limping into Tripoli harbor the battered Werewolf eases into the drydock assigned to her. For now her and her Captain's battle was over.

"Thank you, Admiral. Right now we ask that you keep an eye around the...spill zone."

OOC: S'okay Firen, but the Shipping company is going to be slow in reaction to the incident.

OOC: I checked with Oglethorpia, Firen, feel free to join.

OOC: Well, after this topic, the Werewolf should be in drydock, some of the 3rd fleet around the spill site some 253 miles offshore, and a big corporate scandal over the whole deal.

Meanwhile, Firen, being the socialist-liberals that they are, have also entered, taking over the air surveilance of the spill and notifing the ground whenever it looks like the oil might be heading toward land.

"Understood Minister, we have the area under survailence and will continue to moniter the situation. Admiral Jack Walker over and out."

The Captain of the carrier Raptor Nest can't help but overhear the Admiral's comment after he signs off. "God help Oglethorpia if this gets tied up in red tape, that spill is drifting straight towards their coast." The Admiral turned to the Captain of the Raptor Nest. "Captain, order the fleet to stand by for operation Blackfire. If it ends up they can't take care of it due to buracratic interference, we'll act, I'll not let hundreds of miles of coastline be destroyed because some paper pushers can't see past their desks."
