A recent survey by the Council of Science, via the Tranhumanist Institute for Genetic Engineering and Research (TIGER), has revealed a steady increase in genetic diseases over the last decades, the most pronounced being in various immunodefiency syndromes.
It soon became evident that the predictions of the early 21st century, that advancing medical science would circumvent evolution, have come true. The medical advances that have allowed so many to live who's genes would otherwise have caused them to die, and the absence of any regulating eugenics agency, have allowed these people to continue breeding, passing along their harmful genes, and leading to degredation. At this point, it is estimated that no less than a full 3% of our population is genetically unstable- they are kept alive not by natural processes, but only because various medical technologies have bypassed their genetic instructions. These people's DNA structures really serve little purpose other than allowing for cell division. As many as 55% may carry non-life threatening disfunctions or latent diseases.
When the contents of this survey and the accompanying report were released to the general populace, public opinion concerning human engineering and eugenics took a sharp turn. The opinions and policies, in the name of "ethics", and supposedly intended to "protect the sanctity of life" and "avoid playing god", which have prevented us from checking this were soon declared out-of-date and, in fact, have been recognized for what they are: ultimately harmful, and possibly deadly to our posterity. Once strong opponents of genetic experimentation are quickly becoming proponents of it, after realizing that when you play god in one way, by advancing medical treatments and prolonging life for the good of individuals, you must allow others to play god in other ways, ensuring the good of the species. For, if you do not take care of the species, the children and grandchildren of the individuals who once benefitted will be harmed in ways that were barely even imaginable until now.
Regulations governing human engineering are now under review for alteration and/or repeal, with the aim of giving the Tranhumanist Institute more leeway, and attempting to curtail the spread of harmful genes. However, no matter how fast we proceed at this point, we will be unable to make significant progress for several generations. The next years will likely be fraught with pain and destruction, due to the short-sightedness of our predecessors, and their 'holier-than-thou' attitudes. Pray that we will not make such mistakes again.
