Exploration Command Vessel construction [COMPLETED!]

A couple months ago, a rather overzealous mid-level bureaucrat in our Prefecture of Defense, who has since been terminated from their position, authorized a M€50 million purchase of the plans for the Executor-class Super Star Destroyer, from The Imperial Navy. We were, as you might imagine, somewhat at a loss as to what to do with plans that called for vast quantities of neutronium - a material nearly impossible to fabricate, let alone work with - and the installation of myriad weapons systems that would each require fifty people to operate, all with more than adequate power, but a truly miserable engagement range. The plans were shelved.

This was until someone in the Prefecture of Science stumbled across the file and had a truly intriguing idea. As a warship, our analysts found the SSD had comparatively little potential. Yet, the vast spaceframe of such a vessel had potential as something else - a long range explorer-command vessel. Such a ship would serve almost as a mobile starbase, designed to tesseract-jump into a sector and simultaneously coordinate and command exploration of several star systems at once. She would carry multiple research cruisers comparable to the Scolopendran Beagle-class, as well as be able to coordinate resourcing operations in surveyed systems. She would be adequately but not overly armed and armored, carry every conceivable sort of sensor and comm array, and be capable of entering a particularly interesting system herself in order to take a closer look. She would carry thousands of all forms of probes, in order to support the research operations. The ship would carry sufficient supplies and amenities to keep her crew happy, comfortable, and fed for months or even years, and theoretically might even make first contact with an extraterrestrial species.

The modifications were made to the design, stripping out much of the weapons systems - and all of the ridiculously pie-in-the-sky neutronium armor - in favor of Menelmacari equivalents, more compact and lighter. There are far fewer weapons on the new vessel than on the original design, and the vessel would be comparable in combat to a pair of existing Fëanor-class dreadnoughts - more than adequate to defend herself, though combat is not her purpose. Additional automation has been devised to reduce the SSD's outlandish manpower requirements to under five thousand. The existing hyperdrive and sublight drives have been removed in favor of Menelmacari gravitic cores and tesseract-jump engines. Additional launch and support bays have been installed, and the vessel's interior spaces have been brought up to the famously luxurious Menelmacari standards. The vessel is projected to require [three weeks real time] for construction at the Orbital Drive Yards shared with Kecha.

The plan was signed 'approved' by the Elentári Herself. Menelmacar's first gravship, launched a millennium ago, was christened the Randir, or "Pilgrim" in the common tongue, and like this new vessel, served as an explorer, which opened Menelmacar's doors to the world. In light of this tradition, the new ECV will be christened Elrandir, or "Star Pilgrim" in the common tongue, in hopes she will open Menelmacar's doors to the galaxy.

Heh... right. For size, complain to The Imperial Navy. For some reason they wanted a capital ship almost as wide as the state of Delaware.

And... do you realize you're trying to sell resources to Menel-ma-f***ing-car? They have a resource base larger than Melkor's ego.

Still, thanks for trying to help.

Cute ship but it would be toast if it ran into a hostile Alien race and they are out there plus theres apearently going to be a Galaxic invasion by some anceint evil alien race soon that a bunch of space nations are about to fight and it could get taken out by any decent Star Warship. Of course they would have to be someone that not afraid of Menelmacar.

The Elrandir is capable of putting up a stout defense long enough for warships to arrive. At any rate, the vessel herself will spend most of her time sitting in deep space, centered between the systems being explored by the ships she supports. She's a big ship, but would be hard to locate in the interstellar void by a hostile force, and it's more likely her daughter vessels would encounter enemy ships first, giving the Elrandir time and warning to prepare and call for help.

Of course and the most active pirates out there, the Zoir have several problems to deal with. One of their ruling Warlords got a defeat handed to them recently by 8 Star Destroyers. An excellent idea. The concept seems very similar to our recently deployed General Systems Vessel, Finity's End. Considerably smaller, of course, but we spent nearly thirty years building the damned thing.

Not bad, no, though I question the choice of shape. Our own equivalent is a full space station, whose more spheroid shape has proven more efficient for interstellar jumps. On the other hand, Menelmacar's method of long-distance travel is notably different from ours; perhaps that makes a difference? In either case, I would be interested in comparing notes, once the ship is built.

Or, if you don't want a Chaos, we could Custom-make a vessel for you, seeing as how Foe Hammer Shipyards is one of the best Shipyard operators in the Galaxy(s)

You might as well just scrap the idea of a ship and build a Macrolife mobile space station.
Menelmacar
14-08-2003, 00:42
It practically is a mobile station. And better-looking, too. Besides, we were trying to make a good idea out of a bad investment, and we would have built something like this sooner or later. The Executor chassis simply lends itself well to the mission profile.

The Elrandir, or Star Pilgrim, today finally departed her drydock at the Orbital Fleet Yards shared with Kecha. The product of nearly [two realtime months] of work, the Elrandir Exploration/Resourcing Command Vessel carries a crew of five thousand, and also five cruiser-sized research vessels modified from our usual cruiser platform, and an entire Somtaaw-built resourcing fleet. There are also the finest scientific systems to be found on any vessel, supplies for years of travel, and thousands of every conceivable form of probe. This massive vessel is capable of directing the exploration efforts for an entire sector of space, simultaneously. The Elrandir carries the largest tesseract-jump engine ever built, and will be making her first jump at midnight tonight. It remains to be seen whether additional Elrandir-class E/RCV's will be constructed.

An image of the E/RCV Elrandir in testing maneuvers, taken earlier today from a satellite orbiting Luna.

In other news, the Eighteenth Gravitic Battle Fleet launched this week from Ceres Yards, and Daggerstar Yards put out their first fleet, the Seventeenth. This adds sixty new warships to the Menelmacari navy.

It takes [five weeks realtime] to build the spaceframe of the vessel herself and [two or three weeks realtime] to outfit her fully. She's a heavily customized vessel based on the Executor-class chassis. By comparison, it takes us [three weeks realtime] to construct and outfit an entire thirty-ship battlegroup. Plus there are very few docks big enough for her. So if you want one... she's extremely expensive.
