Rugby World Cup has been revived, group stages complete

07-07-2003, 15:16
We, the Empire of the Never-setting Sun government have decided to arrange and hold a rugby world cup in our wonderful nation. Each team entry will cost 100 million dollars, we are looking for 32 nations to compete in this great spectacle. Any interested countries please enrol here and then we shall rp the results later once 32 teams have enlisted.

The 100 million is to cover accomodation, travel and security costs.

RWC commitee, Empire of the Never-setting Sun
07-07-2003, 15:38
New deal, since it appears 100 million was a bit much for a team, we have slashed this entry fee to 50 million, if anyone thinks this is still too high please post here to inform me and i'll possibly change it.

i think something like this was tried before, but no-one seemed to be too sure how things would work.
if ya can let us know a bit more about how the show will work then halfassedstates would probably enter a team!
07-07-2003, 15:58
If you are organised enough then I will send my "All Blacks" the DG 1st XV.
07-07-2003, 16:02
We propose that each team is given 100 pts to allocate among 5 categories:

Forwards strength
Backs speed
Team determination
Tactical Ability
Team Will to Win

We would then roleplay results using these point allocations as a guide on where each team is strong.

If this proves an unpopular idea then we will just roleplay each game after i have made draw.
07-07-2003, 16:03
If you are organised enough then I will send my "All Blacks" the DG 1st XV.

entry confirmed, please show me how you allocate the 100 available ability points among your team qualities.
07-07-2003, 16:07
Sounds reasonable but I think team determination is the same as team will to win so I have left out one of those groups but i could redo it if you prefer:

Forwards strength: 32
Backs speed: 33
Team determination: 18
Tactical Ability: 17

I would have liked more points  .
07-07-2003, 16:17
Ok, instead of will to win, overall team fitness. We will let you allocae 150 points among the categories, we presume you have wired the 50 million dollars.
07-07-2003, 16:21
Then allow me to redo the figures:

Forwards strength:40
Backs speed: 40
Team determination:20
Tactical Ability: 20
Team Fitness:30

There you go. The money will be wired in 2 installments. An initial fee of 10 million and the rest when you know the tournament will definitely go ahead.

50 millions seems a lot, especially for a small nation like us. :(

Cspalla, while we oppose specism as well, we are still participating. Our society is founded on the principle that all sapiant species are equal, but have their own strengths and weaknesses, and that by using the skills of multiple species, we can improve our society.

Our cats can play rugby. That simple. However, the team itself voted, an unanimously decided to participate without the non-human members of the team.

Opening Game Of The Tournament

Drum Gods vs Hayekistan

After a spectacular opening ceremony, including a tremendous performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a flyover from the Never-setting Sun Airforce, the Drum Gods team emerged to a mass of cheers.

They strolled out proudly into the 200,000 capacity arena, a mass of blue and white and black flags. The Hayekistan team followed behind them, slightly less confident as they had not competed on such a grand scale before.

As the teams prepared to start Drum Gods won the toss and elected to recieve the kick-off. The teams ran out to take up their positions on the field.

Five minutes into the game it was evident that it was going to be an exciting match. The great speed of the Hayekistan backs made for some interesting play as they tried to break through the Drum Gods line. Drum Gods were easily winning the rucks and dominant in the scrums and lineouts.

The first points were scored in the 10th minute when a rather overexcited Drum Gods flanker broke off from a scrum and flattened the Hayekistan scrum half. The referee blew his whistle, awarded the penalty and promptly gave the offender a sinbinning. The penalty was easily kicked from infront of the posts and so Hayekistan had taken an early lead.
H 3-0 DG

Drum Gods swiftly fought back, scoring two quick tries thanks to some superb tactical kicking into the corners where they promptly won the lineouts and drove over the line. One of the two tries was converted.
H 3-12 DG

There was no further scoring by half time though Hayekistan did come close on many an occasion, the sheer brutality of the Drum Gods tackling saving them.

Hayekistan came out much refreshed and looking for the win. They hit back in the 41st minute after a slack tackle had left the left winger with only 30 yards to run in for a try, unfortunately, the kicker squandered a simple kick and so they only scored 5 points.
H 8-12 DG

Drum Gods continued their superb attacking play, combining powerful forward play with the occasional backline move. They scored two quick tries in 5 minutes thanks to some superb work from their forwards.
H 8-26 DG

Two more penalties were added for the Drum Gods after some intensive pressure lead to the opposition being consistently offside.
H 8-31 DG

In the latter stages the Drum gods appeared to tire after their tremendous showing, in the last ten minutes the much fitter Hayekistan backs ran in 3 tries under the posts but even that wasn't enough to save them as the final whistle blew, it had finished Hayekistan 28, Drum Gods 31. A tremendous opener for the tournament.

Congratulations to the Drum Gods. Our speed served us well in the Nasicournian Premier League, but we must adjust to the more physical style of the World Cup.

Question: Is this a single-elimination tourney, or is it more like World Cup footy? Sorry for the ignorance....

It is now time for game one of group four. The crowd, as expected, is very raucous and giddy with anticipation for the start of what promises to be a most exciting match between FELINE and the ATLANTIAN OUTCASTS.

We join the match a few minutes in, and the FELINE backs have already sped past the ATLANTIAN side a few times in the opening minutes to give FELINE a 12-0 lead.

It looks as if both sides are very fit, as the rest of the first half has been dominated by very energetic sprints upfield and even more energetic efforts by the backs of both sides in order to stop the advances.

The score now stands at 22-12 in favor of FELINE as the first half concludes.

the ATLANTIAN OUTCASTS have come out with renewed vigor in the second half, and a long stalemate finally ended with an ATLANTIAN dropkick to bring the score to 22-15, still in favor of FELINE. A quick turnover and score by ATLANTIAN brought the score to 22 all, and things began to look bleak for FELINE in the minutes thereafter. Frustration penalties became the story of the day, as ATLANTIAN converted three of them in the next seven minutes to bring the score to 31-22. 11 minutes remain to be played.

Desperate attacking by the FELINE side yielded little, as the score still favorede the ATLANTIAN OUTCASTS, by a tally of 31-25, as the final two minutes approached.

the OUTCASTS managed to maintain a steady march down the pitch resulting in a score, bringing it to 36-25 with 47 seconds to play.

FELINE efforts were futile over this time, and ATLANTIAN OUTCASTS tacked on another 3 points before time expired for a final score of 39-25.

This was a match full of momentum changes, with an emotional lapse by FELINE at the beginning of the second half proving to be the difference in the match.
09-07-2003, 22:14
Wow! That was... odd. Judging by the stats, Feline should of easily won. Well, thats 2 rounds down, and... a lot to go.
10-07-2003, 12:41
I disagree, the Atlantian team was more determined and Timway showed this as the slump in the early second half.

I thought that we didn't have to put determination level?
14-07-2003, 13:44
Ohh... there was a team detemination and a will to win category. Didn't see that.

Just coming in to us now are the highlights from the first game in group 3 between Timway and The Belmore Family.

5 mins - A safe catch at the lineout and Belmore get the ball to the out-half who places a beautiful kick into the corner for the winger to chase, but it just bounces into touch.
Belmore disrupt the Timway lineout and gain the put in at the scrum.

6 mins - A steady scrum and quick pass from the no.9 give the outhalf acres of space to slot over the drop goal. 0-3 for Belmore.

10 mins - Another brilliant chip through allows the Belmore winger to latch onto the ball and he just touches down in the corner dispite the attentions of the Timway full-back. 0-8 Belmore
11 mins - conversion missed.

20 mins - Still the game is being dominated by the tactical kicking of the Belmore out-half, Timway are holding out through sheer guts with two last gasp tackles having prevented further tries for Belmore.

22mins - the Timway no.8 is yellow carded for an 'over enthusiastic' tackle on the Belmore scrum half who was taken off injured.

32 mins - the Timway no.8 rejoins play with his team only having conceeded a penalty during his time in the sin-bin. 0-11 Belmore.

38 mins - Timway get themselves on the scoreboard with a lovely move by the backs allowing the full back to join the line and create the extra man overlap. The Belmore full back simply couldn't cover the ground and the Timway winger touches down in the corner. 5-11
39 mins - A brilliant conversion attempt clips the crossbar and goes over 7-11 Belmore.

Half time score Timway 7 - Belmore 11

58 mins - The first real chance of the second half falls to Timway, who recycle the ball through a number of phases and eventually force Belmore to concede the penalty. The captain opts for the 3 points from the kick, and the full back promptly obliges slotting it between the posts. 10-11 Belmore.

65 mins - The Belmore out half hits a monster penalty from the half way line to extend the lead. 10-14 Belmore

70 mins - Timway are piling on the pressure, only the astute kicking of the Belmore no.10 is keeping them ahead and out of major danger.

73 mins - The Timway no.6 hits the Belmore outhalf with a beuatiful tackle after he dallied too long on the ball. The knock-on gives possession at the scrum to Timway.
74 mins - The Timway scrum manages to hold up against the pressure of the Belmore pack, the quick pass from the scrum half allows the outhalf to release the outside centre with a long miss pass, and the centre manages to sneak over the line. 15-14 Timway
75 mins - Conversion attempt missed.

79 mins - Another tremendous kick from the Belmore no.10 puts real pressure on Timway with a line-out on their own 5 metre line. The ball is safely caught and cleared to the edge of the 22.
80 mins - Belmore catch the ball cleanly and attempt to drive through the Timway forwards, however the sheer determination of the Timway defense means they can make no progress. In a quick bit of thinking, the out half drops deep and calls for the ball. Timway attempt to kill the ball, but the Belmore forwards do enough to drive them back a yard and the scrum half gets the ball away. The ball is taken safely by the no.10 who sets himself and launches the drop goal attempt, it clips the fingers of one of the timway players but just clears the crossbar! 15-17 Belmore.

83 mins - final whistle

Final Score: Timway Tigers 15 - The Belmore Family 17

In the second game in group 3 today, King Galahad took on Nongland.

Early on the inexperience of the Nongland team (who only recently took up the game) became obvious.
The King Galahad team were more determined, powerful and quicker than their opponents, and after only 15 mins the score already stood at 19-0 in favour of KG.
Only the slightly better tactical awareness of the Nongland team was keeping the score line respectable.

Half time: King Galahad 36 - Nongland 0

The story was the same in the second half as KG continued to rack up the points.
Nongland managed to get the loudest cheer of the day when the out-half converted a penatly kick from the halfway line on 66 mins, but that was it from them.
With their superior fitness showing towards the end KG racked up 5 tries in the last 10 mins, and that was without really trying!

Final Score: King Galahad 88 - Nongland 3
Tries : KG - 13 N - 0
Conversions: KG - 10 N - 0
Penalties : KG - 1 N - 1
Drop goals : KG - 0 N - 0

OOC : Yatsumicas points allocation totaled 160, so I reduced the Back Speed by 10 to 35

IC: In the Rugby World Cup today, all the action took place in group 2.

The first match was between the Drum Gods team and Yatsumica.
The Drum Gods came into the game off the back of a tight opening game win over Hayekistan and went into the match as slight favorites against a Yatsumica side who'se 1st match was postponed due to alligations of drug use by two of the Yatsumica backs.
After consulation with various authorites, the 2 players in question have been sent home by the Yatsumica officials and the World Cup committee agreed to let the team draft in replacements and continue their participation in the event.

After an early exchange of penalties, the Drum Gods got the first try of the match in the 15th min after a beuatiful chip to the corner allowed the winger to just outpace his opponent and touch down in the corner. The conversion was missed. 8-3 DG

18 mins: A quick tap penalty taken by Yatsumica fools the Drum Gods defence who are caught out of position. The scrum-half darts towards the line but is stopped 5yrds short. The Drum Gods defence, however kills the ball and concedes the penalty which is promtly converted. 8-6 DG

21 mins: Afetr a good drive by the Yatsumica forwards, the referree indictates that he is playing advantage, the out half calls for the ball and attempts a drop goal - it misses right, but the referree awards the penalty and again it is converted. 9-8 Yatsumica

29 mins: The Drum Gods forwards recycle possession through 5 phases of play and begni to 'suck in' the Yatsumica defence. As the ball comes back for the 6th time, the scrum-half finally plays the ball out wide and the full-back loops outside the winger to run in an easy score.
The conversion attempt is good. 15-9 DG.

36 mins: A knock-on by the Yatsumica winger gives possession to the Drum Gods just inside their own half. The ball is quickly passed out along the line, the winger kicks the ball through and gives chase. He gets the ball, but the Yatsumica full-back is able to tackle him and stop the try. The Drum Gods keep the ball alive and quickly throw the ball along to the other wing and are able to score the try right in the corner.
The conversion attempt falls short. 20-9 DG.

38 mins: Yatsumica pressurise the Drum Gods line in an attempt to pull a score back before half-time. Their forwards however cannot seem to make any headway. After a coulpe of failed drives, the scrum-half looks to pass the ball out to the backs, but he dummies the pass brilliantly and scampers past the wrong-footed defence to score under the posts!
The conversion is made. 20-16 DG.

HT 20-16

46 mins: The Yatsumica team have came out 'all guns blazing' at the start of the second half, but cannot find a way through the resolute Drum Gods defence.

49 mins: The Yatsumica out half settles for a drop goal, which brings them within a point of the Drum Gods. 20-19 DG

52 mins: The pressure continues and eventually the Drum Gods concede another penalty. The Yatsumica out-half steps up and confidently slots it through the posts to give his side the lead again. 22-20 Y.

58 mins: A huge 'up and under' from the Yatsumica out-half is knocked-on by the DG full-back. from the subsequent scrum, the out-half kicks another drop-goal to extend the lead. 25-20 Y

66 mins: The Yatsumica side continue pushing forward. A miss pass by the out half is intercepted by the Drum Gods centre who sprints clear. the Yatsumica full-back forces him towards the touch-line, but the centre is able to pass the bal;l back inside to the winger who has a clear run to the line.
The conversion is knocked over. 27-25 DG.

68 mins: The try seems to have buoyed the Drum Gods team who look interested in the game again. Continual passing from wing to wing is really stretching the Yatsumica defence. A deliberate knock on give the Drum Gods a penalty, which is converted with ease. 30-25 DG

73 mins: Substitutions by both teams.

74 mins: A chip and chase by the Drum Gods is well covered by the Yatsumica full-back who takes the ball into touch.
75 mins: From the line-out, the Drum Gods drive towards the Yatsumica line going for the killer score. Once again however the packs cancell each other out and the DG's can't make any progress. They drive once more before the ball is played back to the out-half, who kicks a brilliant drop goal. 33-25 DG

79 mins: The Drum Gods full-back catches the ball deep in his 22 and clears the ball down field. He doesn't make touch however, and the Yatsumica winger launches the counter-attack.
80 mins: A brilliant tackle by the DG #8 stops the counter, but Yatsumica still have the ball and the outhalf sees the DG full-back out of position and kicks ahead. The Yatsumica winger gets to the ball first, but he is bundled into touch just a couple of yards short of the line and the referee blows the final whistle.

Final Score: Drum Gods 33 Yatsumica 25

Tries - DGs 4 Yat. 1

“It is N-S Sun with the ball now driving toward the line 20m away now, O great tackle by The MOBTIW player. N-S Sun try to pass the ball on the way down but is intercepted by The MOBTIW. Now The MOBTIW are on a charge past 1 player 2, 3 they are running rings around the N-S Sun team 25m away from the try line now and still charging 20m, 15, 10, Now N-S sun are in with a great tackle! Passed across the line though. The MOBTIW are now only 5m away from the try-line and it is across the line great try!
He steps up for the conversion, kicked high the air, and no it has missed, what shame, too far to the left!”

“The ball kicked high in the air by the N-S Sun forward about 30m away from the try-line and it is a straight chase for the ball, easily won by the N-S Sun team! Who sprint to the try line and score right under the posts! The conversion is kicked nicely in!”

“This game is really tight with barely any opportunities for either side!”

67mins
“N-S Sun is back on the charge against a worn-out MOBTIW team with no will to win! Runs through a feeble attempt at a tackle and over the line and the crowd are going wild! They know this will give them the perfect opportunity to go through to the next round and with the conversion being scored all the N-S Sun team have to do is hold possession against the weary side!”17-12
