To all new nations (JANUARY TO PRESENT) IMPORTANT

Greetings. I know all of you newcomers are eager to make a name for yourselves by acting big and tough, but frankly, you're not impressing anybody.
Listen, not all newcomers are bad, I've been really impressed with alot of newcomers here on NS. I look forward to seeing these nations in the months to come.
However, the vast majority of newcomers here are making a bad name for themselves. After creating their nation only a few hours ago, they embark on military conquest. Let me set the record straight with you "noobs" ( newcomers that don't follow the rules), when you first start out in NS, you are a piddling nothing. Most of the older nations have militaries the size of your entire population! The best advice I can give you "noobs" out there is this: take your time, don't piss anybody off, BE REALISTIC, AND READ THE STICKY THREADS (the threads at the very top of the forum). If you are commited to following the rules, being a courteous player, and progressing REALISTICALLY, you too will one day become a NationStates power, but that take time and patience.
Seriously, don't go off looking for trouble in your first month. That is the time when most nations are destroyed, because they are rude, cheating (and GODMODDING) pains in the rump. They are the people that up and leave after everybody gangs up on them with IC military conflicts and OOC flame fests. Please, don't become one of these noob nations that come here only to disrupt the RP here on NS.
You also ahve to realize that in this stage of the game, there are nations that have been here well over a year. I've seen new nations walking around like they own the damn joint, talking big and thinking that they are untouchable. Well you're not, sorry.
In conclusion, if you are a young nation that may be confused about the way things work around here, and you are serious about becoming a better role player, feel free to ask either me, a mod, or another experienced RPer (you'll know who they are real fast), we will go out of our way to help you if you want us to. Also, there are many other helpful nations out there that will also go out of thier way to help you, but until you get to know who's who, ask any one of the people I suggested.
I wish all of you newcomers that are committed to building a successful nation have the best of luck, and alot of fun times.
Ooo....we should do this every so often, so we should.
Well done, I followed the rules and got a compliment on my good RP and well thought out posting.
Just to add something else:
Stop the freakin anti-elf crap, you are just doing it to bait on menelmacar.

Alright, I'll try that for the next week.

Thank you. I want to make it know that the WMNK and I are not evil people out to crucify all newcomers. I honestly do want to see the newcomers that try hard to be successful and have fun here.
Usefull thread.
Very.
Good idea AMF.
Unfortunatley I had a stint as a "Noob" I speak from experience when I say you won't get very famous or powerful acting like a Noob, the only thing that can come of being a Noob in the long run is you getting your @ss kicked somethin' fierce.
Heh ... I was never a noob. I was a newb that needed help, but I was never a n00b.
I learned how war happened by having a civil war. Safest way. That was I never godmodded or acted n00bish.

Yeah, despite choosing to support terrorists, you RPed that thread very well.
Too bad it's gone now.
And plus, we know in hindsight that was a bad idea
Hey, I didn't support terrorists! You did!
It was Oglethorpia's first day and he decided to mobilize an army to aid the rebels in my country.
Now look at me! :P OK *Looks at AMF* GOOD LORD!!! *Hides in a corner* seriousley though, to all new nations, if you want attention being a Noob may seem like it's the way to go, and you may well get alot of attention, but it's not the kind of attention you want, trust me.

Good advice man. I think when I first started RPing my first post was selling combat knives, and then 2 stroke dirt bikes, and then ground transports and so on until now where Carpage hardly sells anything because our interests have changed somewhat from an external policy to an internal one.

Yeah, but really, if you look at it he was just an idiot.
I am in an odd position. On the one hand, Santo Lazaro is a June Nation, on the other, before my ISP decided it did not like this site, I had Euskadia (yes, I do miss it still :( So I know what it is like on both sides of the fence. When I came here, I was twice as impatient as a regular nOOb, because I knew what it felt like to have that nice 500 million plus population. But, I can tell you, have patience, sooner or later, you will wind up getting the respect, especially if you rp well.
Now, on the flip side, I do have to say one thing to the "old nations", some go out of their way to help Noobs and stir rp, to you, I give praise and thanks. Some, however, tend to be "cliquish." I understand the major rp makers around here tend to be busy, and in addition, they tend to have to spend half their time dealing with OOC flames (which is something we do need to work on a bit, imho) But if a new nation pages you with an idea, or tries to start a thread, communicate with them, even if it is "sorry, this rp is closed, but I can keep you in mind for the next one." , such actions would help New nations feel that they did not have to blow up the world just to do something. Just my two cents.
Yeah. Me, I think I must be the most peaceful RPer on NS Earth, along with Alhana Catherine. I have never fought an international war and I never want to. I always treat newbs with respect, as newb is just the term for someone new to the game.
N00bs I do not treat with respect, as they are the ones that give newbs a bad name. They're the warmongering, godmoding scum of the earth that just go onto the forums in their first three minutes of playing and declare war on the first name they see, and then godmod to get their way out.

I understand that many of the newbies or n00b try to act tough and be like Klingons (sorry, had to interject some Star Trek in). Well, as stated, not all of them are like that. I myself prefer/want/need to establish a strong state and make as many allies as I can. I find it sad that many newbies have the dreaded Chihuahua Sydrome (the smallest going after larger, more formitable opponets.) But heck, you won't find me being a war pig!

I'm a little more used to this place now, but I'm still trying to get people to notice me, and still learning the ropes. My suggestion to other newbs out there... For the first few months, keep your head down and your ears open. If someone makes a suggestion, listen. Watch what people like Resi Corp, Automagfreek, and Unum Veritas do. Odds are, whatever they're doing, they're doing it right. Above all, don't be ashamed to admit you're wrong.

Why would anyone want to start out on military conquests so early? Every time I've reflected on such a thing I've realized that even other nations in my region have as many as 1.2 billion people, against my 12 million. Are there really so many people trying to overtake other nations this early that it's necessary to lecture them?

Things not to do on your first day (and the rest of the time)
* Declare war on the UN
* Declare war on all nuclear powers
* Declare war on random nations who have done nothing to you
* Declare war on entire alliances especially ones with military superpowers
* Irritate mods
* Make stupid posts which have nothing to do with the thread
* Insult people without regard

OOC: AMF has done well in making this thread, laying down the rules for the newer players. I agree with him when he speaks of being impressed by some of the newcomers and their RP skills. I myself have been impressed with the RP skills of a few newcomers. If there are any serious new nations that wish to be assisted with RP conduct, character development, that kind of thing, feel free to send me a telegram.
AMF, ever since the good old WMNK kinda disbanded, I must say I've experienced more of the kind of thing that you just posted above then ever before. And to make matters worse, I don't have a coalition at my back anymore to destroy the infidels. You should just look at this. http://invisionfree.com/forums/Armageddon_HQ/index.php?showtopic=77
Note, that is part of an ongoing conflict with the nation Kevin Land, although some material will be missed the general idea of complete absurdity of their claims should be easily identified. Note 2: Nak nak and myself are both top 150 militaries in the world, just to make the situation crazier.
Anyhow, I'm still working on that n00b with his shield, though that mainly means I'm trying to get him to accept the fact that my missile would've destroyed it (good luck) and convincing another couple of n00bs they can't have "nukz" (even fatter chance).
But I must end this by saying...

Perhaps, but a person RPing a race like the Protoss from StarCraft or the Races from WarHammer 40K are bound to have to start off at a much higher tech level than the ordinary human.

I personally think starting at future tech is abit unfair to those that worked their way up so that they wouldn't be called godmodders.
Perhaps, but a person RPing a race like the Protoss from StarCraft or the Races from WarHammer 40K are bound to have to start off at a much higher tech level than the ordinary human.
Yes, but they would have to arrange all of their RPs quite differently. They wouldn't belong in the normal II and NS RPs, they would really need to do a lot more work if they wanted to get people to A) Fight them and B) Not cry godmode

OOC: Myself, I don't RP with people who use space-tech, unless the do it well, like Sunset and Scolopendra (sp?). Speaking of development before NS, it doesn't matter. My buddy WA, who I've known for many years, created 'Whiptail', his main RP character at age 12, when he started writing stories about him. Later on he finally found a race that was decently well-known to assign the bastard to. WA developed his character further on NS, starting from scratch to be fair to some of the people who started characters with their nations. To summerize my rambling statement: IT DON'T MATTER.
