The Lancre Football Cup
Every month Lancre holds a football tournament where all the countries (excepting ones that don't want to) are thrown into a hat and are drawn against each other in pairs. After the heats (when half of the competing nations are knocked out) the quarter finals begin and they are drawn against each other until the match to see who's third and then the final. You don't have to be present for your team to take part.
Scoring: It's a roleplay thing really and the scores are decided with a die rolled by the delegate. Obviously the delegate must be completely impartial. 1 is taken off each roll so that say Nation X rolled 2 and nation Y rolled a 1 the result would be 1-0. if the same number is rolled for each nation then it goes on to extra time and then, if it happens again, penalties. No godmodding remember!
There is now a complicated points system based on previous performances devised by Bellenia. Will be explained later.
Winning: If your team wins then you get a prestigious place on this page and get to host the next cup. If your nation is deleted it goes on to whoever was second and then third and so forth. If the country you're playing is deleted then you win by default. If a country is deleted before it's heat comes up then a nation that's just joined and is therefore not in the cup can apply to take it's place and if a winning country leaves or is deleted a rematch is held with a recent nation. NB: This only applies to heats.
Time span: A heat consists of however many is convenient and one heat is equal to one day. The quarter finals, semi finals and the third place securer are one match a day and the final is also (obviously) one match a day.

is this football or soccer..er..football?
This is the kind of football where your foot actually touches the ball.

anyhow...thanks for the clarification
Since Magnefique Mufc Fans ceased to exist, Ths Nether Realms will host Lancre Cup II which begins on July the 1st.
Lancre Cup II begins tomorrow! Bing your football shirts, your chants, your oversized polystyrene hands and join the party! Ths Nether Realms hosts.
We have heard of this curious game where the players have no hands. We shall send a diplomat, Joe Montana, to observe.
Why should they need hands? It's football! Nah, I know what you mean, it's just much easier and, or at least I think, a lot funner too!

Make the keepers job harder.
What? Like tying weights to their feet is that legal? I'm fairly sure I've got a law against it somewhere...*blows dust off gigantic tome* Yes here it is, straight after the 'pregnant women may not wear hats' act of 1781!
Made some improvements, hope everyone likes them.
If a nation is deleted before it's heat comes up then a nation that has just joined can apply to take its place.
The quarter finals have begun!
Check out the sports page of our new newspaper The Lancre Herald (http://www.madwilliesworld.com/lancrenews)
The heats listings for the third Lancre Cup will be posted on the 1st of August.
Woo hoo! Soccer and, erm, football and heats, oh my! Let the next Lancre Cup begin!
"Faster! Harder! Practice now, maggots, because we will not accept defeat!!!" The coach screams at his team, while drinking a nice cold beer...
The quarter final listings shall be posted soon...
Well firstly you have to be in Lancre. Unfortunately, you missed your chance to join the cup by just one day as there was still a place open. You're still welcome to join Lancre though! The next cup is on September the 1st, so you may have to wait a while...
We've got plenty of other distractions though, just check out our regional newspaper... The Lancre Herald (http://www.madwilliesworld.com/lancrenews).
We're still in need of some kind of system that would make it more realistic (the fact that the previous month's finalist was knocked out in the heats kinda set the alarm bells ringing). Any suggestions?
It's the final today!
Last Hope vs. Extreme Dictators!
Ach well
like they say you can't win them all!
Well done to last hope.
Maybe to make it mor realistic we would have to beat each other really.
No wait, let me explain.
I don't know in something daft like whoever gets the most replies on the forum has a bigger chance.
Like with each reply or something, ( not including yourself) your tam earns another point.
These points are totalled.
If you get 10 that means you are automattically awarded one goal.
20, 2 goals, 30,3. you get the picture.
However, the whole dice thingy could still apply, meaning that you could still lose but it just means you have a better chance.
No?
Spamming is against the rules, so that wouldn't work...

I could write something in php to generate a random number of goals...
Aye, but we need something that would incorporate how well they did last time but also allow really good teams to be beaten only against greater odds... I don't know anything about scripting, but is that possible?
My car's BUMPer is a bit buckled...
I've been knocked out during the heats AGAIN!
*throws tantrum*
King Siroc, may I offer the use of our ahem, motivational, coaches to your team? They seem to be quite effective at producing good footballers.. the ones who survive anyhow
When do the quarterfinals begin.
My 'niceness' rating would plummet though Laru!
After the heats have ended the quarterfinals will begin, which should be roughly two or three days, depending on whether more nations join/leave etc.
Also whether the forum allows me to put anything up, its been throwing its own tantrums at me recently...
It hasn't finished yet, the resuts will be revealed later (usually late in the evening).
i know if you win the cup you gostraight through to the Quarter finals or something and the dice is cool cos like ENGLAND in '70 they one it the last time but didnt that time so it depicts the form of players. 8)
We are in the quarter finals right now. The winner will go through to the semi-finals.
Alas, my RL country and my NS country fare as badly as each other in football. Sirocco's only got past the heats once.
Semi Final listings are up...
BRING IT ON LARU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
how come there are 3 semi's?
Because the whole thing keeps getting mucked up when nations leave/join. I'm trying the hardest I can really!
ah so how is it worked out?
I don't notice any recent entries from the Fluttergork team...
All the details are on the first post. It's quite irregular because I group the heats into two matches per day because if I did it as one per day, the heats would last more than half the month and I want it to start on the first of every month.
Ah, I think Fluttergork got disqualified because of irregularities... it's not a great system, but it's the only one we've got until someone thinks of something better...
so how is the semis worked out cos there are 3 people in the final

A mini-league stage of the six teams left in, with the top two going through to the final, would work IMHO.
A mini-league stage of the six teams left in, with the top two going through to the final, would work IMHO.
Hey, that's not a bad idea! :D
Irregularities? Guess we should show up sober next time :-(
So you you saying another three teams in the final
No, one will have to be randomly disqualified. They do of course ge a consolatory bowl of fruit. :)
*eats fruit*
Need confectioner's sugar....
*snatches bowl away*
Oy! They're Storm Giant's! I'm off to send 'em right now!

Oh, i thought i was the one disqualified...
The heats listings are up! Let Lancre Cup V begin!
*the crowd goes wild*
The Fluttergorkian team has spent much time training for this next Cup, and have completely sworn off alcohol. They have, however, switched to bubble gum.

How about something like:
if you were in the quarterfinals last time you get +1 to the goals rolled and the opposition gets -1 (cancelling if both were and not going below zero obviously)
if you were in the semis you get +2 and they get -1
if you were in the final you get +2 and they get -2
Or something - not sure if the figures make it too biased.
So if someone who was in the final plays someone in the semi and the score is 3 all under the current system it modifies to 4 - 3 in favour of the previous finalist. (finalist gets 3 + 2 -1 and semi-finalist gets 3 - 2 + 1).
May turn out too complicated...
Hmm... so if you were in the final last time, you'd get at least two goals in your match?
Bellenia
14-10-2003, 10:13
I guess so - do you think that makes it too unfair?
Thats tight cos' not everyone was in lancre for the last cup, i joined lancre just after lancre cup last month and i missed it :(
Bellenia
15-10-2003, 16:39
Actually they wouldn't automatically get at least 2 goals because if they were playing the other finalist the penalty would cancel the bonus.
Maybe for new nations you could throw a dice as a once off to see what their entry level is e.g. 6 = finalist, 5 = semi, 4 = quarter, 1-3 = no ranking.
8)
Bellenia, I like those ideas and I think I probably will incorporate that into Lancre Cup VI! :D
King Siroc
Come on Hewins. You want some do ya
Utter complete idiots
24-10-2003, 22:47
I think thats a bit unfair!
What do you suggest?
I've had to compress things A LOT for the semi-finals but I'm going to do two matches for each quarter final next time to make up for that...
OO! cool! football (not soccer :) ) I shall watch intently - i'm not good at playing - but I can watch like a hawk
Your nation will be automatically included for Lancre Cup VI, unless you do not wish to participate Polly!
O I never realised I was knocked out in the semis!
Sirocco why was i left out of the semis :tantrum:
I had to finish the cup quickly before November. That shouldn't happen this time. Some nations were randomly disqualified.
Ok i had better calm down a bit though
*kicks his chair over and starts another tantrum :tantrum: *
Heat 2:
Andrewmania vs. Aamericaa:
Newcomers Aamericaa defeated Andrewmania 2-0 today, in an exhilirating match. The Andrewmanians had much to say, but most is, sadly, unprintable.
Andrewmania 0 Aamericaa 2
-----------------------------------
Bettledom vs. Hewins:
Favourites to win, Bettledom lost in a spectacular rally by the nation of Hewins. Things appeared to be going well for the Bettledomians at first when they were leading 2-1 at half-time but then the Hewinian captain scored an amazing hat-trick of goals winning his nation a place in the quarter finals!
Bettledom 2 Hewins 4
-----------------------------------
Rob Anybody vs. Phoemara:
Rob Anybody defeated Phoemara narrowly today in a close match which everyone (well, nearly everyone, the Phoemarans were decidedly upset) agreed had been a 'jolly good show.'
Rob Anybody 2 Phoemara 1
-----------------------------------
Bellenia vs. Soviet Trasa:
The Bellenian side were powerful figures in today's match, scoring goals right, left and centre. One Soviet Trasian supporter said afterwards, "It was bad, very bad, but we will stand tall! We are the greatest! We shall-" but then two other rather embarrassed Trasians took him away for a lie-down.
Bellenia 7 Soviet Trasa 2
-----------------------------------
Turif vs. Clatanatia
Turif triumphed today in an amazing climax to the heat with a victory that was as sweet as it was lucky for the old-time Lancrastian nation. Two of the goals were scored by accident when it rebounded off one corner flag, a surprised Clatanatian and the referee (DTASian) who allowed it on the grounds that it had been "Very clever, indeed."
Turif 4 Clatanatia 3
Heat 3:
Little Jack vs. CoolAdept
Little Jack hammered CoolAdept in a 4-0 smasher. The Little Jackites were literally dancing as they left the stadium after the match. The CoolAdept captain said, whist adjusting his ultra-hip designer sunglasses, "Meh, they were lucky."
Little Jack 4 CoolAdept 0
-----------------------------------
Chadbone vs. Rinceweed
Chadbone was the bookies' favourite as they entered the pitch this morning, but now, as things turned out, the underdogs triumphed in a shock development in the Cup. "I was surprised." said a random Chadbone supporter, "They're not usually so alert."
Chadbone 2 Rinceweed 5
-----------------------------------
SAF vs. Magrat
After a 0-0 draw, the match, which had hitherto been quite dull, went on to extra time, and that's when things really started to hot up. The SAF team managed to pull in two decent goals, and left the opposition trailing in their wake. "I can't be abidin' this." said one upset Magrat fan.
SAF 2 Magrat 0
-----------------------------------
Sizzle vs. People and Happiness
This match was also a draw to begin with but at a much more competitive level. At five goals apiece, the teams were shattered but when the final whistle went, it was clear that they had to continue. One Sizzle defender achieved great fame today when one hard kick sent the ball flying across the pitch and straight through the goalkeeper of People and Happiness who was later berated by his team-mates.
Sizzle 6 People and Happiness 5
-----------------------------------
Sirocco vs. Radikuistan
Sirocco has been beaten once again in what is beginning to be something of a tradition for the Sirocco supporters (of which there are nine. Not a popular sport, football. Very strange) by Radikuistan. "Woohoo!" said one deliriously happy Radikuistani man.
Sirocco 3 Radikuistan 4
Heat 4:
Laru-Tan vs. Polly Oliver
Newcomers, Polly Oliver knocked Lary-Tan's socks off today in an amazing 5-0 monster. "We are the champions!" the Oliverians chanted as goal upon goal was scored. "Meh, bungee-jumping's more our thing." said one Larutian shrugging.
Laru-Tan 0 Polly Oliver 5
-----------------------------------
Rillean vs. Umgullia
Rillean triumphed over Umgullia by two goals in a, quite frankly, bizarre match. Events had to be postponed temporarily due to a sudden shower of fish.
Rillean 6 Umgullia 4
-----------------------------------
Sheewee vs. Kazad-Dumm
Sheewee defeated Kazad-Dumm by two goals also in the clean, but still rather whiffy, pitch today in a confusing concatenation of events. First of all, the Sheewee goalkeeper disguised himself as the referee and had scored three goals before anyone noticed. This was because the REAL referee had been concussed previously by a falling haddock.
Sheewee 5 Kazad-Dumm 3
-----------------------------------
Englishman vs. Inauna
After a new referee had been instated, Englishman was pronounced winner today in a 6-3 goalfest that nearly ended in tragedy: One impressionable Inaunan jumped onto the pitch screaming fanatically and promptly got hit by the ball in the back of the head. He was placed with the old referee to avoid unpleasantness.
Englishman 6 Inauna 3
-----------------------------------
Hendland vs. Fluttergork
Hendland narrowly defeated Fluttergork today in another goalfest this afternoon. "Meh, we're more of a bungee-jumping nation anyway." said one dejected Fluttergorkian trudging off.
Hendland 5 Fluttergork 4

Quarter Final 3:
Yns Mon vs. Rinceweed
Yns Mon defeated Rinceweed today at the end of extra time, both sides having scored three goals apiece by the final whistle. The defence on both sides were quite disappointing, but when the Ynsian captain did a solo of his national anthem, everyone cheered.
...
Which was nice.
Yns Mon 5 Rinceweed 4
-------------------------------------
SAF vs. Pablicosta
SAF defeated Pablicosta today in a rather quirky match today. When the final whistle had gone, the wife of a Pablicostan defender walked up to his husband and slapped him. Apparently he'd been having an affair with her sister who'd been married to the local gangster, but that was after her first had been killed by an explosion of course, but they were discovered when Jonathon (the butcher) came to the house to propose marriage to her daughter who's already ina love triangle between him, the baker and the candlestick maker... all very odd.
SAF 3 Pablicosta 1
Quarter Final 4:
Sizzle vs. DTAS LAND
DTAS LAND defeated Sizzle 8-0 in an utter landslide win today. "It was quite splendid said one DTASian. "Long live the Emperor!"
He then disappeared waving a flag patriotically, and I must say the flag caught more than a few wandering gazes...
DTAS LAND 8 Sizzle 0
-------------------------------------
Aamericaa vs. Extreme Dictators
Extreme Dictators, old favourites for the Cup, got away by the skin of their teeth today in a match which shows that this awesome team could be beaten with the right focus and concentration. "I'm just glad their keeper had that cardiac arrest when he did." said one Dictator zealously.
Aamericaa 4 Extreme Dictators 6
Quarter Final 5:
Hewins vs. Svenssonia
Hewins was beaten by Svenssonia in an intense match today, there was much craning of necks, and there was so much excitement that one Svenssonian fan who had a huge afro was lynched by the crowd for blocking the view.
Hewins 4 Svenssonia 5
-------------------------------------
Sliponia vs. Polly Oliver
Newcomers Sliponia triumphed over Polly Oliver in a stunning demonstration of skill, agility and speed. Not that the Polly Oliverians were an easy opponent. Their ferociousness was commented on by one commentator who said: "They're like some sort of monstrous regiment!"
Sliponia 5 Polly Oliver 2
Quarter Final 6:
Boyson vs. -Arynth-
After an initial draw of 3-3, things were expected to go the same way as the Yns Mon vs. Rinceweed match.
And they did pretty much too.
Boyson 4 -Arynth- 5
-------------------------------------
Bellenia vs. Turif
It was a tight match today but Bellenia pulled through, defeating Turif 2-1.
"Them Turifites didnae know wit hit 'em!" chuckled one crusty Bellenian in the pub after the match. "Mind ye, I expect they were all lookin' at the pretty lady refereeing eh?" he said winking and nudging.
I didn't really have the heart to tell him it had been a man...
Bellenia 2 Turif 1
