UK NS Meet 2

I figured it's time for another (unofficial! - damn lawyers) British NS Meet such as the one Kellarly organised in Manchester (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=437292) in August last year, and I'm hoping at least some of those who made it last time, will come.

This time the location is the Bullring / New Street area of Birmingham, to make it a bit easier for the Southerners. :p Since the intention is to flow the alcohol plentifully, I suggest this is one for those adult enough. ;)

[UPDATED on 26/04/2006]

Birmingham NS Meet: Saturday 13 May, 1pm - 9pm/trains

Meeting spot: Cafe Rouge, Bullring, Unit SU744, Upper Mall West, Birmingham, B5 4BG
Online presence: http://www.caferouge.co.uk/locationshowstore.asp?storeid=32
Multimap: Cafe Rouge, Bullring (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=407250&Y=286500&width=500&height=300&gride=407237&gridn=286636&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=pc&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=B54BG&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=0&scale=5000&multimap.x=97&multimap.y=62)

Drinking spot: Station Bar, Station St, Birmingham, B5 4DY
Online presence: None
Multimap: A couple of doors from restaurant, see below...

Restaurant: New Happy Gathering, 43-45 Station St, Birmingham, B5 4DY
Online presence: (A review, actually) (http://www.mybrum.co.uk/birmingham/restaurants-review-new-happy-gathering-restaurant.htm)
Multimap: New Happy Gathering (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=407000&Y=286500&width=500&height=300&gride=406969&gridn=286520&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=B54DY&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=&zm=0&scale=5000&multimap.x=234&multimap.y=97)

Verbal Directions:
1) Exit Birmingham New Street Station through the front, past the taxi rank.
2) See the big half-finished cylindrical building in front of you? Walk towards it.
3) To the right of the building, adjoining it, is a ramp. Walk up it.
4) You are in a pedestrianised square with a NationWide branch directly in front of you, on the opposite side. To the left the square forks into two paths. To the right the square forks into three paths. Take the middle of the three paths on the right.
5) You will walk down a sloping paved path towards a view of a church tower beyond a drop. Cafe Rouge is halfway there, on the right side of the path.
6) Fight the dragon, roll 8+ on 2D6 to save damage.

The plan (which probably won't be followed):
We meet at the Cafe Rouge as it is the easiest place to find, and visual cues do not include vague descriptions of yuppie home furnishing stores and a strip club. After a couple of hours of sipping hot chocolate, we go to the Station Bar where we get totally wasted on cheap bitter. This is a well-illuminated but somewhat dingy old-fashioned pub, some locals but enough random train commuters passing through to ensure it is student-friendly. Then we hop a couple of doors over to the New Happy Gathering (how deliciously apt...) for an evening meal. As the review indicates, it is inexpensive but good-quality Chinese buffet food. Vegetarian options are plentiful. It is broadly similar to the restaurant visited at the Manchester NS Meet, and because this will be a Saturday night on a match day, I strongly recommend we get in at 5-6pm. We can go back to the pub or find another one afterwards.

Alternatives include Del Villagio (Italian restaurant) next to Cafe Rouge, Pizza Hut, or everyone deciding to do something completely different.

Run. Run! RUN!!!
We are going to want to be back at New Street station at 9pm sharp. No shit, even on a weekday there are only two intercity trains out after that time, unless you want to wait forever.

I'm probably not going to attend, for obvious reasons (no, it has nothing to do with low tolerance for alcohol either). But I insist that somebody make some kind of reference to me during the meeting. Otherwise you will all suffer a dreadful fate! Bwahahahaha!!! ;)

Seriously, sounds like a good idea. I can see it being successful in the wake of Manchester '05.

Unfortunately I have neither the funds nor the time this time around for the April dates :( Although I might be able to make the May one, esp, as it will be only one day, maybe staying over night.

Once a date has been deceided, hopefully for May, I will do my best to get sorted for then.

10 - 24 April (Covering the university Easter break)

8 - 14 May (Well before summer exams)

Those like me who work are free to specify Saturdays. I will see what dates seem to be the favourite over the rest of the month. :)

I'll be up for early May. As you say, it's well before exams, and May 8th is the day my dissertation is due in. The 13th would be best, I reckon, as it's a Saturday, though I'll be able to make any day except the 8th.

Yeah, the 13th would be a good date (my dissertation is in on the 1st of May), and tis a week before a few of my exams too.

Ooh ooh, this sounds interesting, even though I'm not in the UK. How much does public transport in the UK cost from London Stansted to Birmingham? And are there any cheap youth hostels? :D
Tactical Grace
14-03-2006, 21:11
You can get trains to Birmingham New Street really easily, so long as you leave plenty of time for changes and delays. I'm not sure about travel out of London, but I am assuming £50-100 if you're buying on the day. Ticket prices get pretty silly the moment London is mentioned. :(

UK has plenty of youth hostels, not sure about Birmingham but as a large city it should have one. Ask in your local one, or look up the YHA online.

A fair bit and yeah.

Trains from Stanstead to Birmingham cost £48 return on the weekend of the 13/14th of May (just using that as an example).

The National Express coach service will cost you about £33.50 on the same weekend, although it takes slightly longer.

As for accomodation, I can't check right now, but those are the travel costs. :)

It will cost you about £50. But not knowing when you'd be able to travel it is just a guess. Try www.qjump.co.uk, for some reason I couldn't get any results just putting in Stansted Airport and Birmingham New Stree, So I tried Stansted to Cambridge (£12.00 - £14.50, depending on if you specify your exact times or just want an open return, any times) then Cambridge to Birmingham New Street (£39.50 - £48.70).

Good luck, and if you come don't forget your Paspoort. (Or your tooth brush).

@TG: May will be easier for me too. I'm not in the country in April.

Thanks for the help. It's a bit too expensive though :( One return ticket Eindhoven - London Stansted and a train ticket for about 50 pounds (75 euros)don't make it worthwile to do it :(

But for about 50 euros (excluding tax atm) I can fly from Amsterdam to Birmingham. Hmmz, and travelling to Amsterdam is free for me in the weekend.

I'll give it a thought. Where is LP, he might be interested as well (and then I don't have to trave alone :D).

There are actually trains from Stansted Airport to Birmingham New Street (they go through Leicester, so it'll be the train I get). They don't seem to be very often, though - on Saturdays they seem to be one every hour, at 25 minutes past the hour. And they take just short of three-and-a-half hours.

You shouldn't buy a return ticket. For some reason it's more expensive than buying two singles. You can get two singles for £13.50 each (total £27). Looks like I trump you all in getting cheap train tickets.

... except Ollie, but he probably can't get free train tickets for everyone. :p

edit: and I find it so amusing that First class costs 10x as much and all you get is free coffee and biscuits and a newspaper.

I can make the 29th, 6th, and 13th. But I really don't want to do the 6th, because my dissertation's due in on the 8th. Obviously if I finish it before that I can make it, but I doubt I'm going to manage that. The 29th would be ok, but, again, I should be doing my dissertation. 13th is easily the best choice for me.

Absolutely no clue whatsover. I went to Solihull for a chess tournament once, but I was about 10, and I slept in the car on the way up and back.

I suggest we all meet at New St Station, as that's probably where most people will arrive. Maybe if someone has an NS sign or something...

It's a first year university exam for biochemistry; it's called molecules to cells adn is possibly my hardest exam this year, owing to the fact it's all about pathways for proteins entering and exiting an average cell. Topic post has been updated with likely and possible attendees based on thread responses to date. To add your name to the list or update your status, please post in this thread. I am very pleased that many of the Manchester NS Meet veterans are planning to come - if you guys do show up, this should ensure a fun day. :)

The Birmingham NS Meet will begin at around 1pm, basically after the pubs open, and end at 9pm, giving people plenty of time to arrive and depart by train or other forms of transport. Because of the football situation, the more traditional pubs will get pretty damn crowded and noisy, so I will look for a bar and a restaurant or two, where we can move as the day goes on. As in Manchester, there will of course be an opportunity to improvise a meal on the day by aimless wandering and consensus.

I apologise for there being no venue as yet, however I was on holiday in Turkey, and then had a three week design crunch as soon as I returned to work. I will however be wandering the streets of Birmingham on Wednesday in disguise, seeking out a couple of suitable establishments.

Venue details and a map will be provided by the end of the month, telegram exchanges of phone details between confirmed attendants to take place a week in advance of the Meet. If for any reason you feel the need to use a disposable SIM card, a week in advance will be the time to buy. :p

think i'll go for the too-early one as its a much shorter journey (only 2 1/2 hours - not bad), and it'll probably take me a while to find the place (here's hoping its not underground like last time ;) :p)
and for the way back i'll need to get the 9:03 train home or i'll be royally boned and it'll take more like 7 hours to get back

Yep. The key to organising a US NS Meet is probably keeping it to one state. An NJ or CA NS Meet for example, and seeing if there are enough people within 100-200 miles of the venue.

Oooh, Prague would be cool. We could take the ghost tour...(though admittedly it's rather crap). If we went to Krakow, there's the dragon cave...which is awesome in the summer when it's 30+ degrees (C) outside, and about 10 degrees in the cave.

Could get cheap flights to Prague as well...

certainly doesn't help that since i last looked at train times a few weeks ago they've mysteriously tacked an extra hour onto the journey both ways, as well as a change (used to be a bloody direct service  )... also family pressures here (parents want to do something for my birthday coming up next week (choosing my big present, oooh) and i'm out on sunday as well), so... my apologies, but all in all its just no longer practical for me.

Here's a good one to sing. I learned it from The Bard's Tale. Awesome game, by the way.

Beer, beer, beer, tiddly beer, beer, beer
A long time ago, way back in history
When all there was to drink was nothing but cups o'tea
Along came a man by the name of Charlie Mopps
And he invented a wonderful drink and he made it out of hops. Hey!

He might have been an admiral, a sultan, or a king
And to his praises we shall always sing
look what he has done for us, he's filled us up with cheer
Lord bless Charlie Mopps, the man who invented beer, beer, beer, tiddly beer, beer beer.

The drunken rat, the aken drum, trowen pub as well
One thing you can be sure of, it's Charlie's beer they sell
so all you lads and lasses at eleven o'clock ye stop
for five short seconds remember charlie mopps. one, two three four five.... HEY!

He might have been an admiral, a sultan, or a king
And to his praises we shall always sing
look what he has done for us, he's filled us up with cheer
Lord bless Charlie Mopps, the man who invented beer, beer, beer, tiddly beer, beer beer.

a barrel of malt, a bushel of hops, you stir it around with a stick
The sort of lubrication to make your engine tick
40 pints of wallop will keep away the quacks
It's only 8 and 1/8 a pint, and one-and-6 in tax

He might have been an admiral, a sultan, or a king
And to his praises we shall always sing
look what he has done for us, he's filled us up with cheer
Lord bless Charlie Mopps, the man who invented beer, beer, beer, tiddly beer, beer beer.

LORD BLESS CHARLIE MOPS!

Sooo... I am the first one back from the meetup. I was impressed that we actually managed to keep talking for the whole 7 hours despite there only being the 3 of us, who hardly knew each other.

I was also really impressed with myself when I actually managed to be able to picture whereabouts TG and Stalin lived on a map of the UK. As opposed to my normal grouping of everything outside London into one big group.

Meh, the TG and Stalin should probably be back by now. Do they actually have a life? Is that why they aren't posting on NS. I'm confused.

On the other hand maybe not going to Brum today was a good thing.....And what's that supposed to mean? :p
Now you see I already in my mind but deceided not to write on the off chance of being accused of having a dirty mind.

However, I can feel vindicated at not having written it now, and accusing you of of having a filthy mind. How was my comment filthy. I think any would be slightly embaressed if they have beer spilt all over their mid-section. The beer was the Cream of Manchester. So I can hardly be at fault for using the adjective 'creamy'.

Read it again...

Better than a damp crotch. I can imagine it would be quite embaressing to state that when TG entered he made your crotch all creamy... right... nevermind.

The "...right...nevermind" part. Yeah, that bit.

The Prophet (one of the three) from Monty Python's Life of Brian.

This one is known as the Blood and Thunder Prophet, because that's what he was screaming to the crowd from his pedestal. There was another one who was talking about some guy who would come with a sword possessing "Not just one blade, not two blades, not three, four, five or even six blades but SEVEN BLADES!!! and - " etc. It was a parody of the religious upheaval of the time.

In retrospect, yes. But in the movie it was all screaming psychotically violent stuff about the coming apocalypse.

My second favourite scene from The Life of Brian (http://www.intriguing.com/mp/_pictures/brian/sandal.jpg) is a more gentle attack on religion, followed by the unforgettable "Ooh you lucky baaastard!" (http://www.intriguing.com/mp/_pictures/brian/fromwrec.jpg)

I'm going to memorise that, but convert it for sarcasm so when my gf complains at me again I at least have a good reason for being sarcastic :D

Meh, the TG and Stalin should probably be back by now. Do they actually have a life? Is that why they aren't posting on NS. I'm confused.
Yep. One life between the two of us ;)

Do they have non-fashion rips everywhere including on the back of one of the thighs?
They're old and comfortable! And I haven't got round to sewing patches onto them. Because I can't sew for shit. At least you didn't claim you could see my arse, like one of my housemates did...

Oh yes, and then there is Stalin who hardly talks at all unless prompted.
I'm a quiet guy, what more can I say? Especially if there's someone around who's willing to talk for England...

I seem to have been given the job of organising the next meet, more details of which will be given in another thread sometime. PM will be pleased to know it'll be in London.

They're old and comfortable! And I haven't got round to sewing patches onto them. Because I can't sew for shit. At least you didn't claim you could see my arse, like one of my housemates did...I decided I didn't really want to talk to someone, who I had only just met, about whether I had seen their hairy thigh, or their hairy arse. The main reason being that you can't work a topic like that into a conversation all that easily.
