Trolling/Flamebaiting.

This constitutes, to my way of thinking, a contextual troll/flame.

The matter-at-hand was the stated opinion of a Canadian political scientist that the overall response to the defection of a star member of caucus was sexist and offensive, as terms such as 'whore' and 'dipstick' were used.

Jaythewise, therefore went right ahead and posted this, parroting the blatant sexist, mysoginist viewpoint:

I am apopleptic. Extremely angry. And rather than explode all over him like a Roman candle, I've instead decided to seek guidance from the Mods.

So? What to do? Obviously avoid an excess of mud-slinging. What else?

Calling someone a "whore" sounds like flaming to me.

I think locking the thread is less than even-handed, Cog.

I asked the Mods to determine whether Jaythewise's post constitued trolling/flamebaiting, not to lock the thread.

The thread, in and of itself, is entirely legitimate. Jay's post was, in my opinion, mysoginistic and mean-spirited.

given that you don't have time to 'analyze this', as per post # 40 in the thread,

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8903523&postcount=40

when will you, or another Mod, have the time to analyze Jay's post and unlock the rest of this thread?

I think locking the thread is less than even-handed, Cog.If I were going to lock it and leave it, then it would be less than even-handed. This is just a temporary measure.

when will you, or another Mod, have the time to analyze Jay's post and unlock the rest of this thread?Probably tonight (Eastern time).

Okay, fair enough Cog.

I'll look for an update here in Moderation.

Thanks.

Okay... I've been good. (for that matter, in this instance I was never bad...)

Does the lock come off the thread yet? If it makes your lives easier, forget about Jay's nasty post.

I just want the thread back at this point.

Cogitation has not been around to reply, as I understand he is enjoying an opportunity for a pleasant real-life event. He did say "probably". Your impatience is not our concern.

I've reviewed the thread, and while I found Jaythewise's language harsh, and his opinions in opposition to the general tenor of the thread, he used language straight from the quoted article.

NationStates does not guarantee that you will be unoffended. Quite the opposite, in fact. Max welcomes lively debate, and states in the TOS (http://www.nationstates.net/pages/legal.html) "You understand that this site is open to the general public, and agree that while using it you may encounter content posted by other users that you consider objectionable." Our definition of "offensive" involves breaking one of the rules of this forum, which in my opinion Jaythewise did not do.

HINT: Just say "Thank you". Polite gets you further then acting up with the moderators.

I wasn't being rude. I was being polite. Just goes to show that people can read in whatever emotional overtone they see fit into a given post. In this case, impatience.

Anyway, thanks...
