The vessels were of Abh design, matching known Abh technologies and materials, replicated from vessels purchased from another Abh Empire in another universe by TRIAD. A grateful Abh Empire there had rewarded TRIAD's efforts to stem a stellar war with generous technological trade, and this was now being used for far different purposes than intended. Sixteen ships, two missile cruisers, eight assault frigates, and six capture frigates. Their crews were bioroids, biological androids being controlled by a Digital Entity, hidden within each ship.

This was a covert operation conducted by MACE, the Market Assessment and Competitor Evaluation. MACE was the black bag arm of TRIAD Enterprises, unkown by all it's billions of employees except MACE operatives, the Board of Directors, and the CEO himself. MACE obtained it's revenues from mercenary operations in various locations, all the time using peronnel and equipment difficult or impossible to trace back to TRIAD herself. For this campaign, the cover of the Humankind Empire Abh had been selected, as at least one iteration of that nation had been confirmed in this universe. Normally MACE would have simply begun attacking select targets to determine strengths, weaknesses, and exploitable markets. This time however, the Jannarii Empire wanted privateers to harass and attack the 'piratical' trade of the Federal Union. This served right in line with MACE's overall goals, and the added bonus of bounty revenue would further fund operations down the road.

The ships were Abh. To all appearances the crew we Abh. The technology was Abh, with select refinements. Normally Abh ships could only use their Planespace drives for FTL travel at naturally occuring "Sords", white holes where Planespace intersected with realspace. TRIAD had augmented the drives with devices which created temporary, artificial Sords, allowing entry and exit from Planespace and realspace from any point in either. Dimensional array passive sensors allowed the detection of mass shadows within realspace from ships lurking in Planespace. Planespace drive equipped sensor drones allowed conventional passive and active sensing and scanning of realspace, with the data being transmitted using tightbeam dimensional comms. The final piece of the puzzle, deployable Reality Anchors.

The Reality Anchor project had been a goal of MACE for years ever since encountering Nexus 1 and it's links to other universes. The discovery of subspace, hyperspace, planespace, and all the various forms of fractal reality that allowed FTL travel, it was proposed that it may be possible to tap into the very substance of the local universe affect those forms of travel. When the project finally bore fruit, it was hailed a two-edged sword. In effect, the anchor temporarily severed the connections between realspace any selective forms of "otherspace". Any and all technology which inherently relied on the selected Otherspace would simply cease to function. Otherspace drives, sensors, comms, computers; all would fail within the effect of the anchor's field.
The limit to the technology were the power requirements, which were enormous to cover a five light minute area of space, and the fact that any one device could only cover one specific Otherspace at a time. Analysis of the intended target was required to determine exactly which fractal mode was employed. Further research was needed to tune the anchor to that fractal mode, and the device could finally be used. If all variables had been met, reality anchors could very well leave a victim nearly defenseless in normal space, with no way to escape or call for help. The micro-fusion reactors which supplied power for only ten minutes of use could be powered down to avoid detection, a tiny solar array providing energy to the communication and startup equipment. When powered down like this, it would take extremely fine resolution passive sensors, or powerful active scanners to detect a drifting anchor device.

All the tools had been assembled. Now all MACE needed was the stage, and the actors.

Unnamed System - TEC Tradelanes
********

Watching for several days from within the relative safety of Planespace, the Abh vessels had drifted outside realspace. When they arrived, two hundred and fourty tiny, one meter wide sensor drones had been deployed into realspace when mass detectors had shown the system was empty. Over the next two days, the drones had drifted into a wide net, collecting data using passive, zero emission, sensors. This system was another tradelane stopover for the TEC, situated closest to Federal Union borders while still remaining outside sovereign territory. The percentage of civillian and military traffic which belonged to the Federal Union was higher than the other TEC members, but was not a constant presence.

For now, the small fleet of sixteen waited, drifting through Planespace, leeching data from their drones in comm bursts timed for when local traffic was thinnest or non-existant. MACE waited for collection of more data on the Federal Union's most common drive types, and what fractal modes those drives might utilize. Until they had enough information to reliably use the reality anchors, they would continue to wait, and drift...

The D.E.S. Starbane glided gracefuly through the trade lanes with her 3 cruiser escorts. Recently there had been an upsurge in pirate and Merc attacks on the TEC lanes and the current defence force had been, needless to say, inefective. Already aproximatly 50 Dragonan merchant vessles in 3 trade convoys had been eradicated and it was becoming increasingly likely that the tranwarp hub would need to be sealed to stop the hostiles from reaching Varius.

To this end, in an effort to preserve the flow of goods from the TEC, Empress Cheng had ordered the deployment of the 1st, 3rd and 6th Am-schwersten Flotten to the TEC lanes. While few in numbers, these fleets had some of the most advanced ships in the force, Starbane was perhapse the most advanced of the lot.

Now they drifted through the lane at wap speeds, taking a last sensor sweep before returning to the nearest neutral TEC base for resupplys.

Bridge, D.E.S. Starbane
The room shook slightly, the lights flickered and the captain fell out of his chair for the 3rd time that week.
"Its that turbulance again Sir!"
"I noticed that ensin. It's definately something in this section the lane.. Maybe an attempted interdicter feild?"
"It could be another FTL feild sir, Tri-core technology is notoriously sensative to that." This was the science officer speaking as the room shook again.
"Hmmm, tell the escorts to drop back to the middle of the turbulance, folow them back. Once there we'll deploy the interdicters, First off, dispatch com-drones saying that 'we're conducting an investigation to suspected Pirate activities in this secter of space'."
"Yes captain" the Phi-breeds ate the reap of the bridge sighed as one, launching the probes and altering the ships course.

TEC tradelane, center of the 'mysterious turbulance'
The ships droped out of Warp with a rale green-white flash and the cruiseres moved to a triangular formation before, with a slight humming sound, the gravity wells on their hulls
powered up, disrupting FTL travel in the lane and pulling the different branches od space into one.

TEC Tradelanes - Unnamed System - Planespace

The shipminds of the MACE fleet conversed within a shared dataspace using ansible comms, there would be no transmissions to intercept, and no time-lag. The entire conversation took place far faster than most organics took to take a single breath.

"The unknown vessels are altering course. They appear to have detected either our probes or our presence."

"How is that possible? All current models indicate that Planespace only intersects with realspace in the presence of a Sord, natural or artificial. There should be no casuality linkages of any kind without one."

"Unknown. It is possible that our known models of spacetime geometry do not fully apply to this fractal universe. There is a one point zero two nine percent chance that the unknown vessels detected a mass shadow disturbance projected into realspace."

"With a probability that low, and that is still the most likely scenerio? I find that highly doubtful."

"Enough! How it is possible is no longer an issue. The fact remains that they appear to have detected our presence. The capture frigates will divert course while the warships will remain in combat readiness. We may be required to engage these vessels."

"Understood. Plotting new course out of this system."

"Acknowledged. All systems upgrading to combat readiness."

**********

By the time the Starbane and her fleet took position over the center of the 'distrubance', the capture frigates had moved through Planespace on an exit vector from the system. They would wait some five hours away for a report from the warships. If no report was recieved within ten hours, the frigates would assume the warships had been destroyed, and would return to the nearest MACE outpost for re-assignment.

When the TEC ships activated their gravity well systems, the warships were suddenly slammed with gravitational distortions. The FTLi device was attempting to merge the various fractal modes with realspace, and this was having a very negative impact on the bubble the MACE warships rode within Planespace.

"Report!"

"Upgrading previously unknown vessels to hostile status. They have activated a device which is operating in very similar fashion to the reality anchor. The energy field is destabilizing Planespace and attempting to merge our threespace bubble with realspace, however without the presence of a Sord, such a merger would annihilate all matter within the threespace bubble."

"Can we escape?"

"Negative. We are unable to affect translation of the threespace bubble. We are trapped at this location. Additionally, one destroyer has already attempted independant activation of it's Sord projector, with negative results. We cannot transition to realspace."

"Estimated time until the threespace domain collapses?"

"Estimated time is twenty minutes until domain collapse."

"Acknowledged. Can we still communicate with our sensor drones?"

"Affirmative."

"Dispatch new orders. All sensor drones are to adjust to collision course with hostile targets. Inform the onboard guidance to commit active scans of targets prior to impact and target the source of the gravitational distortions. Attempt to disable those gravity wells."

"Acknowledged. Relaying new commands. All drones confirm new orders."

TEC Tradelanes - Unnamed System - Realspace
**********

When the orders were recieved by the two hundred and fourty drones, the TEC ships were suddenly lit up by just as many active scan systems. EM, gravitic, tachyon, and more forms of energy were bounced off the hulls of the Starbane and her fleet. Only a second after the last scan emissions returned to each drone, the torchdrives aboard each flared to life, quickly burning through their stores of propellant as they each built to as high a velocity as possible.

Nearly a full third of the drones were distant enough to build to nearly eighty percent the speed of light, while the remaining two thirds varied between twenty and sixty percent light speed. Each had chosen a different target, but one and all were aiming themselves to impact with whatever their scans could determine as the most probable source of the gravity well.

Within the span of five minutes, two hundred and fourty cee-fractional kinetic kill vehicles were screaming down on the Starbane's fleet.

OOC: No problem. I'm patient. Also, I didn't intend for things to go south like that so quickly. You threw me a curve ball with how you worded your FTLi and essentially turned my own trap against me.

Here's an OOC intel tidbit. Planespace can only be physically accessed (Entered or exited) in the presence of a white-hole (Sord). Planespace and realspace cannot co-exist physically, so ships entering Planespace form a pocket/bubble of realspace (threespace) around them to survive. By attempting to merge the different modes of space together, it's preventing Sord formation, and exerting 'pressure' on the threespace bubble. In a nut shell, if the FTLi doesn't let up, the bubble will pop and the ships will get pulled into Realspace forcibly. Although with the consistency of nebula gas.

ooc: Ah I see. Typicly I was gonna edit the effects (/ revise them) on advice form other people who RP. However, what I've described was the baisic idea, that the gravity would be so strong it would have the same effect as a gravity well, or worse!

OOC: Up to you then. If you want to retcon the effects, I am willing to play along. If you want to try and continue from here, I'm alright with that as well.
