The Empire of the Wolf’s Armed Forces:

The Ensign of the Imperial Military

The Empire of the Wolf comprises, at the time of writing, some 7.086 billion people, with a professional armed force of 200 million soldiers in several arms of service. Of these troops, half are funded and raised by Skgorria and half by Atopiana – the two major powers in the Empire. Several hundred thousand foreigners serve in the armed forces, most notably in the Imperial Foreign Legion.

The largest single force is the Imperial Land Forces, which has some 150 million personnel in all, of which just 37.5 million are front-line combat troops, with a 3:1 tail:teeth ratio. This force is evenly split between Atopiana and Skgorria, and is organised as follows:

Principal Forces:
Skgorrian Region
Atopian Region
West African Region
East African Region
Eurasian Region
China Region
Defence and Reserve Forces:
Stakhanograd Corps
Megalopolis Primary Defence Corps
Strategic (Eurasian) Reserve Army
Strategic (China) Reserve Army
Special Formations:
Imperial Foreign Legion (currently at Army-level strength)
Imperial Protection Corps
Imperial Land Training Corps

Each military Region comprises almost five and a half million troops, although in all cases ancilliary units are not counted – e.g. rear-area mechanical units, psi-war units, traffic police, military police, laundry units, cooks, supply units, etc etc. Without including these units, it is theoretically possible for the 150 million strong Imperial army to field 28 full-strength military Regions!

The contribution of the Imperial Logistics Corps (comprising almost 90 million people!) is invaluable to the success of all Imperial deployments, although they are truly the unsung heroes of the Land Forces. They are accompanied in the annals by the Field Police, Imperial Red Paw (medical units), and the Imperial Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (IEME). Together, these four organisations make up the bulk of the 112.5 million members of the Land Forces who are not part of the ‘teeth’. The fifth and final ancilliary organisation is of course Imperial Military Intelligence (Имперский Военнаяа Сведения - ИВС), or the IVS.

Organisational Table:

REGION: 2-10 Fronts (approx 810,000-5,400,000 soldiers).
Commanded by: Marshal of the Region
FRONT: Three Army Groups (approx 405-540,000 soldiers).
Commanded by: Field Marshal
ARMY GROUP: Three Armies (approx 135-180,000 soldiers)
Commanded by: General
ARMY: Three Corps level units (approx 45-60,000 soldiers).
Commanded by: Lieutenant-General
CORPS: Three to four divisions (approx 15-20,000 soldiers).
Commanded by: Major-General
Division: Three brigades (approx 5,000 soldiers).
Commanded by: Brigadier-General
Brigade: Three battalions (approx 1,500 soldiers).
Commanded by: Brigadier
Battalion: Three companies (approx 500 soldiers).
Commanded by: Colonel
Company: Three platoons (approx 100 soldiers).
Commanded by: Major or Captain
Platoon: Four squads (32 soldiers).
Commanded by: Junior Officer (Lieutenant 1st or 2nd Class)
Squad: Two fireteams (8 soldiers).
Commanded by: Corporal to Sergeant-Major
Fireteam: 4 soldiers.
Commanded by: Lance-Corporal to Corporal

After the Imperial Land Forces, there are also the Imperial Air Force (30 million personnel), the Imperial Navy (18 million personnel), and the Imperial Space Force (2 million personnel). Respectively, these organisations are responsible for air, sea, and space operations. All of these organisations also include their own logistical capabilities.

The Imperial Air Force is in addition responsible for the transport of the Land Forces’ airborne units; an oddity given that it is the Logistics Corps which is usually responsible for the transport by air and sea of Land Forces units. Furthermore, all close-support assets, including helicopters, are part of the Air Force, which has on occasion seen serious mistakes made on operations. The IAF is organised as follows:

Principal Forces:
Air Region Skgorria
Air Region Atopiana
Air Region Eurasia
Air Region China
Air Region Africa (West)
Air Region Africa (East)
Defence and Reserve Forces:
Homeland Defence Region
Megalopolis Defence Region
Imperial Air Training and Reserve Corps

Air Region: 16,000 aircraft (five armies)
Commanded by: Air Marshal
Air Army: 3,200 aircraft (five groups)
Commanded by: Air Vice Marshal
Air Group: 640 aircraft (10 squadrons)
Commanded by: Group Captain
Wing: 64 aircraft (four squadrons)
Commanded by: Wing Commander
Squadron: 16 aircraft (four flights)
Commanded by: Squadron Leader
Flight: 4 aircraft
Commanded by: Flight Lieutenant

The Air Force uses aircraft ranging from the Su-47 air superiority fighter to the Tu-160 strategic bomber, and everything in between. It should be noted that sailplanes, powered gliders, and other trainers are operated purely by the IATRC.

Of the three terrestrial Imperial forces, the Navy is the smallest and possibly most important. It has its own air power and a full Marine Army (four Corps – each Corps is attached to the four Grand Fleets) and is tasked with protecting Imperial trade lanes, projecting the Empire’s power abroad, and providing an escort for the ships of the Imperial Logistics Corps. The Navy is organised as follows:

Principal Forces:
Mediterranean Grand Fleet
Pacific Grand Fleet
Atlantic Grand Fleet
Indian Grand Fleet
Defence and Reserve Forces:
Black Sea Fleet
Caspian Fleet
Imperial Naval Training and Reserve Corps

Grand Fleet: 6,400 vessels (four fleets).
Commanded by: Admiral of the Fleet
Fleet: 1,600 vessels (four taskforces).
Commanded by: Admiral
Taskforce: 400 vessels (four forces).
Commanded by: Vice-Admiral
Force: 100 vessels (10 squadrons).
Commanded by: Rear-Admiral
Squadron: Ten vessels.
Commanded by: Commodore
Flotilla: Five vessels.
Commanded by: Captain
Vessel: One ship or submarine
Commanded by: Lieutenant Commander, Commander or Captain

Finally, the Imperial Space Force. Its tasks are the maintainence of the WOLF satellite and space-station intelligence and construction network, the manning of WEREWOLF and LUNAR-1, the two imperial moonbases, and the defence of the terrestrial launch sites in the Empire as well as the retrieval of satellites and so on and so forth which fall to Earth. There are four spaceports which come under the purview of the ISF, which are: Baikonur Spaceport (Wolven Eurasia); Stakhanograd Spaceport (Stakhanograd, Laquatian Isles); Grossetape Spaceport (Atopiana); Bir Moghrein Spaceport (Wolven West Africa). Each Spaceport is guarded by a division of mechanised infantry from the Defence Force, while the two moonbases hold a brigade of troops each.

There are some 52 spacecraft in the ISF, of which 20 are armed. These operate out of the four Lagrange-point based militarised space stations (Wolf, Atopiana, Skgorria; Grossetape) each of which are home to five of the military craft. In addition, there are other stations that enable mining craft to reach the asteroid belt, and yet others which, it is planned, will be used as a base for an attempt to colonise Mars.

The Imperial Naval Vessel Primo Frank:

Laid down – May 2018, on the anniversary of the British Londinian War
Maiden voyage – December 2022

Primo Frank is the current flagship of the Imperial Naval Service, and is the pride and glory of a fleet which has only recently been brought back to strength following the disastrous naval encounters of the Iragian War. Stunned by the shocking obsolecence of their previous equipment, the then Atopian Navy began a programme of indigenious, ultra-modern, procurement. From the ground up, the Atopian – and later Imperial - Navy was rebuilt to take account of the lessons learned from their encounters during the Iragian War.

First and foremost, it was decided, a super-dreadnought was needed. And so one was designed in 1997, and in early 1998 work began on the vast logistical and engineering exercises that needed to be completed both in Atopiana and its holdings. The main naval base of Stakhanograd needed an entirely new dry dock plus a deepwater dock to house the monstrous vessel, while a second set of docks was constructed in Wolven West Africa to ensure that the proposed fusion-powered super-dreadnought (then known as ENFV-1 for Experimental Nuclear Fusion Vessel type 1) would be able to roam the seas at will.

When work was finished on the docks in 2010, efforts were redoubled to amass the raw materials needed for the construction of the behemoth, while new technologies were being added to the design all the time. Between its original conception in 1997 and its launch on the 14th of December 2022, the ENFV-1 underwent no less than twelve major design overhauls, with the last resulting in the installation of several direct energy weapons systems for ultra-long range naval combat in addition to the superheavy gauss weapons that were her main armament. Since her launch she has provided the INS with a morale boost and a fantastic increase in their global power projection ability.

Length: 1km
Height (above waterline): 250m to the top of the communications mast
Width: 500m
Displacement: 1.2 million tons
Top speed: 15 knots
Maximum armour: 15’ of layered composites with a triple-hulled construction and multiple sealable compartments to prevent catastrophic flooding.
Main weapons: 12 40” gauss guns in six turrets (three fore, three aft); 6 1T-yield pulsed maser DEW systems (three on each side below the main superstructure of the bridge).
Secondary weapons: 50 10-tube cruise missile launchers; 400 AAA weapons systems of varying calibres; 200 four-shot box SAM launchers; depth-charge launchers; 50 4-shot 200mm torpedo launchers.
CIWS: 1,000 2mm ‘Portcullis’ flechette cannons (capable of over a million RPM).
Helicopter complement: 50 ASW helicopters; 25 utility.

I really admire your military. It's just so organised which is probally why you defeated me so easily. My forces are not as well organised or well co-ordinated. Does your Army work in co-ordination with your airforce like you would using blitzkreig tactics? I now wish that we had worked on the same side and being allies.

Yes, the Land and Air forces work in concert with each other (and very often the Navy). Blitzkrieg and Soviet tactics are our staple, but don't worry about having lost - it gives you an important lesson, whereas the victor has no reason to shake up his or her strategy or equipment! :)

Imperial Intelligence and Security Organisations:

Internal Security:

The Внутренне Обеспеченность (VO), or Internal Security, is the Wolven Empire's secret police. They are tasked with the eradication of dissidence and the monitoring of potential internal threats, and are concerned with terrorism, insurgency, and political activities which "run counter to the interests of the state and the Wolf." Their headquarters is currently in Megalopolis Primary.

The VO has two subsidiary departments - the Public Deception Unit (Общественный Блок Обмана or OBO), which produces propaganda which comes from apparently non-governmental sources (bloggers, anti-government underground newspapers and so on); and the Special Investigative Unit (Специальный Трассологический Блок or STB) which is responsible for the policing of all Imperial intelligence, police, and security units. It is so secret that only the Emperor and chief of the VO know of its existence, and there is a unit which is known only to the Emperor himself whose task is to spy on the VO's chief - and the STB!

External Intelligence:

Имперская Внешняя Сведения (CVS), or Imperial External Intelligence, is responsible for intelligence gathering, counter-intelligence operations, and active espionage and assassination with their 'Active Service Operatives'. They are based in Skgorria.

Military Intelligence:

Part of the Imperial Land Forces, the Имперский Военнаяа Сведения (IVS) - Imperial Military Intelligence - are nonetheless tasked with the gathering of all military intelligence, and it is not an uncommon sight to see officers in the uniform of the Army on board Air Force ELINT and AWACS aircraft. They are also concerned with counter-intelligence, false intelligence operations, and the collation and analysis of all data gathered by all military units. Any captured information or prisoners will eventually end up in front of an IVS team.

Paramilitary Police Units:

The Imperial Judiciary:

Better known as 'the Judges', this unit was formed to control the unruly populace of the super-city Megalopolis Primary, but has spread to all parts of the Empire. Empowered to impart instant justice, up to and including the death penalty, the Judges are feared and loathed; to the extent that they live in barracks and are based in parts of the Empire where they have never lived.

It is suspected by some that they were thought up by an official who had more of a liking for comics than he let on... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_%282000_AD%29)
