Prestonian Navy Withdraws from Gens Romae

October 18th, 2010

Aircraft Carrier CPS Victory sailing into port after deployment to Gens Romae.

Hudson--After three months of tense standoff with Gens Romae, the Department of Defense announced today that it was withdrawing the Prestonian Navy from the region. This announcement comes on the heels of the recently ratified UFAN-CA Nonaggression Pact.

The deployment had been the largest in Prestonian history, with over 250 ships and 1 million men being deployed for a proposed invasion of Rome. No DoD officials were available for comment, but a Sargent speaking to us on condition of anonymity said he was "disappointed that I didn't get to fight...I've been halfway around the world three times but never fired my weapon."

The military is currently maintaining DEFCON 2 but would not go into detail about why or from whom they feared offensive action. The Civilian Alert Level remains at Code Blue.

Military to become Multilingual Over Next Five Years
October 21st, 2010

Hudson--The Department of Defense has announced that it will be spending nearly C$5 billion over the next five years to make all its personnel multilingual. Starting next month, all military personnel will start learning German, Russian, and Volscian. When asked why this was being implemented, Field Marshal David Oliver said "In the next five to ten years, we are most likely to deploy alongside forces from British Londinium, Wagdog, or Kampfers. As such, we need to learn their languages."

This move comes on the heels of the withdrawal from Gens Romae, and it is believed by some that funds from that proposed invasion have been redirected to this program.

Government Raises Price Window on Fossil Fuels

October 23rd, 2010

Oil Rig in the Elysian Fields, the most productive oil pocket in Central Prestonia

Hudson--The Department of Commerce has announced that it will raise the top end of the "price window" for fossil fuels to C$2.85 per gallon, from it's former ceiling of C$2.50. Secretary of Commerce Scott Whittamore cited "several factors" in the decision to raise the window, but did not elaborate.

The price of crude oil has been increasing since the embargo with Griffincrest Oil was announced in 2007. 95% of the nation's crude oil comes from domestic company Republic Oil, which suffered a severe setback two weeks ago when the drill bit on one of it's rigs broke.

The price window was introduced as part of the Fair Pricing Act of 2004 and is regulated by the Department of Commerce.

Soccer Riot Claims 5

November 3rd, 2010

Davidsburg--The match between Hudson United and FC Davidsburg has always been heated to say the least, but it took on a darker reputation last night, as a riot broke out during the match, claiming five lives. At press time the riot was ongoing but reports were that police were stabilizing the situation.

The riot started when a popular Davidsburg player, Ryan Nichols, was given a red card for a hard tackle of a Hudson player. The crowd, enraged, began throwing trash on the pitch, resulting in a halt of play. By that point, however, it was too late. Davidsburg fans began taking their anger out on the fans from Hudson, and the fight spilled out on to the pitch. Reports indicate that at least three Davidsburg players got involved in the fight, though at press time PBG has been unable to confirm this.

Of the five killed, we know that three were Hudson fans trampled to death in the massive panic of the stadium. The identities and information of the other two remain undisclosed at this time.

This match has long been known for it's tension, with sides taken along economic as well as sporting lines. Davidsburg has historically been a mostly middle and working-class city, compared to more affluent Hudson. Lawmakers have pointed to this riot as proof of favoritism, intentional or otherwise, towards the capitol by businesses, resulting in the economic disparity.

Prestonian National Soccer League officials have stated that the match will be rendered null and void and a rematch will take place behind closed doors. Hudson had been leading 2-1 at the time of the riot.

Prestonian National Side Announces Bid for World Cup 37

November 8th, 2010

PNSL Headquarters, St. Andrew--Just five days after the horrific riot that claimed five lives, the PNSL has announced that it will field a team in the World Cup for a second year in a row. The roster has yet to be released to the public, but officials with PNSL state that the national side will retain it's coach from last year, Dan Coover.

The team made an appearance in last year's World Cup, going 0-8 in the first round. Coover says that the team has been training all year for a better showing this World Cup. Said Coover, "we're coming to play, that's for sure. People think we're pushovers after last year, but if they underestimate us this time around, they'll be sorely mistaken. We want the Cup."

Preston: No Military Aid for Order of America

November 15th, 2010

Boston Skyline at night, pre-war

Hudson--Pres. Preston announced today in a press conference at the Presidential Mansion that he would not be sending any military aid to Order of America. He continued, "Although I will not send troops, economic aid and rebuilding is not out of the question."

Order of America was recently granted it's independence by Urcea, and has come under attack by rebels believed by some to be connected to the Urcean government. Urcea denies these claims.

The President's stance comes one month after the signing of the UFAN-CA Ceasefire, to which the President was a signatory.

Department of Travel Releases Travel Guide to Central Prestonia

November 19th, 2010

Hudson--With tourism in the country reaching well over 10 million people annually, not including business trips, the Department of Travel has released a culture guide to the nation. Here is a small piece of this guide, which can be found in full at www.deptoftravel.cp

1. Prestonians value punctuality; if you say you're going to be there at 7:30, be there at 7:30 or call ahead.

2. Nudity is legal and it is common to see women walking around topless on a hot summer day.

3. When eating out, a 15% tip is considered appropriate.

4. Guns are omnipresent in the culture, so don't be surprised if your companion carries a handgun.

5. For business matters, conservative colored suits are the norm.

6. Prestonians love a good debate, but visitors are cautioned to stay away from the topic of soccer (football) in conversation.

7. Being invited to dinner at a companion's home is considered a great honor, and no expense is usually spared. One should therefore bring a small gift, such as a bottle of wine, as a token of appreciation.

Londinians Glass North Calaveras

November 23rd, 2010

North Calaveras--Yesterday, at 2:30 PM Calaveran time, the government of British Londinium unleashed perhaps the biggest nuclear strike in world history.

The strike consisted of 27,000 missiles, although it is unknown if they all carried single warheads. If there were MIRV warheads, the scale of the attack would be much larger.

Current death tolls from N. Calaveras are unknown, but a report from the remains of the Calaveran government indicated that perhaps 90% of it's citizens had been killed, with the death toll expected to continue rising. Several senators from multiple parties have denounced this attack as "nuclear genocide," and called for British Londinium's expulsion form the UFAN. Pres. Preston released a strongly worded statement condemning the attack within hours.

Davidson Commits Suicide

November 29th, 2010

Kensington--Three days ago, the controversial Consul Sir Alistair Davidson of British Londinium was found dead in his office. The death has been confirmed to be a suicide, though means are not known at this time.

Davidson was a career politician, starting as an MP for his region and moving up through the ranks of Londinian government all the way to Consul. He was described by many Londinians interviewed as "a breath of fresh air" for Londinium in the wake of the Swanner regime.

In recent years, however, he came under massive fire from the international community for his human rights abuses in colonies. His nation had twice been condemned by Pres. Preston within the space of less than a year. Preston sent his condolences to the Davidson family yesterday and wished the new Consul luck in his rule.

Consul Davidson's successor is James Azzopardi, the former Vice Consul. He was not available for comment.

Department of Interior Announces Plans for New City

December 1st, 2010

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/JayPhuket/IMG_3994.jpg
Artist's conception of the new city

Hudson--The Department of the Interior announced today that it will combat the overpopulation in the cities in a radical new way: by building a new city.

The new city's name has not been released, but many names have been speculated about, including New Liberty and Prestongrad. The DoI has refused to confirm or deny these names, but has said that the city will be ready within two years.

This move comes after the recent census shows the population of Hudson at 25 million, well over the 10 million it was planned for. The new city will alleviate some of these issues.

The new city is also of interest to the national government, as a possible new capital. Said one government official, "Most of the government buildings in Hudson are over 100 years old and ill-suited to modernization. In addition, with the offices expanding, we have no place to put them. The new city will do much to help solve these problems."

The city is to be built approx. 50mi south of Hudson, along the Freedom River.

New Flag Unveiled

December 5th, 2010

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x267/Central_Prestonia/NewFlag.jpg
The new flag of Central Prestonia

Hudson--Today the Department of Interior announced that it was unveiling a new flag for the Republic of Central Prestonia. The flag has the same colors but features a fist in the center, flanked with sheaves of wheat.

This comes less than one month after the government announced that it was scrapping the Revolutionary Flag, in place since independence was granted in 2002, in favor of a more modern design. A massive "design the new flag" campaign was launched, allowing the citizens to submit their own ideas.

The winning flag, out of a pool of over 100,000 designs, came from a 3rd grade student in St. Andrew, Ashley McCloud. Her parents were quoted by PBG as saying that they were "very proud" of their daughter. Ashley herself said that she was "happy my flag got picked....the fist wasn't my idea but somebody told me it would look cool so I did it."

The flag is scheduled to be introduced within a month, though government buildings are already flying it. The old flag will remain legal to fly but be gradually phased out of sale.

Name of New City Announced

December 8th, 2010

Hudson--The Department of the Interior has announced that the new city under construction south of Hudson is to be named Prestongrad in honor of the nation's founder.

The name was highly speculated about, and the DoI has also revealed that it had considered over 20 names before deciding on Prestongrad. Other names making it to the final round of decision were Riverport, New Liberty and New Hudson.

Pres. Preston for his part said that he "had nothing to do with the naming process...it's nice to see my legacy live on but I didn't ask them to." The city is expected to be completed in 2011, and is built to house 35 million in and around the city.

The government has also announced that it was giving monetary incentives to citizens willing to move in. 10 million people have purchased houses in the new city, which is to become the new capital over a period of five years.

Preston Will Not Run In Jan. Election

December 17th, 2010

Seaside--Speaking from his beach house in Seaside, Pres. Preston announced today that he has no plans to run for a third term in the election scheduled for January 15th.

This move was turns the Presidential race on it's head within the Prestonian Democratic Socialists, with no clear-cut successor. Current PDS favorites include Vice President Justin Gannon and longtime General-Secretary of the party Marcus Combs. These two have been trading the lead in the polls for the past three months.

Other parties are taking notice too, however, with many seeing this as an attempt to capitalize on the lack of organization within the lead party. Republican candidate Steven Propper said that his campaign was focused on outlining the divisions in the PDS as possibly counteractive to continued progress in Central Prestonia. No PDS official could be reached for comment.

The final nominations will be announced next week, and debating will begin. The winner of the election will take office on April 3rd.

Gannon Wins Presidential Election

January 16th, 2011

Hudson--After the election last night, exit polls indicate that Justin Gannon, the Democratic Socialist candidate, has won the Presidential Election.

While the poll is not official, it indicates that Gannon holds a slight lead over Democratic candidate Matthew Quinlan, leading by 3%. Under such tight margins of victory, a recount is likely to ensure no errors were committed.

Elections officials state that the results should be official by next week. For their part neither Gannon or Quinlan has announced victory or conceded defeat.
