The Internets ask for international help

Interwebz

The long anticipated declaration of independence by the Internets was met with much celebration and enthusiasm. Millions of people, already de-facto living on the Internet, proceeded to become true Internet citizens.

However, a month has passed, and the independence of Internets hasn't gone far beyond just declaration. The users have discovered they have no land, no money, and basically nothing, apart from their own computers and a series of tubes. Due to high unemployment rate (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=534706), the users had little income, and attempts at business proved to be epic fail.
Internets' traditional lolcow-based agriculture turned out unprofitable due to lack of market for the lulz. Manufacturing was simple not an option, and h4x, the only Interwebs-created intellectual property, were illegal and hard to sell, especially since all had backdoors. Corporations were opting to buy out the nation of Internet, to block the lulz turn the net into a commercial district of ads, shops and hotels, but it was not what the independence was achieved for.

Following an anonymous suggestion, the president of the Internets, Anonymous A. Anonymous, decided to address the international community as the last hope to keep the Internets' neutrality and independence. And so it follows.

To all World Leaders

Dear brothers and sisters around the world, sovereign nations united in freedom and independence! We address you in our dark hour, hoping that you will support our intentions of getting true sovereignty.

We have declared our independence now, all together believing in it, and in the bright future of the Internets. But, being just a series of tubes with electronic signals, our nation doesn't have the resources to become more than just a declaration. Our dependence on external resources puts the Internets on the edge of economic slavery. We're in dire need of servers to run our sites, sovereign territory to host and defend them safely, resources to expand the network, all requiring more material things than we have now. And, of course, we'll be grateful if you help and encourage your people to join the wonders of Internets, the great opportunity to live two lives at once.

All help you can provide will be highly appreciated. Rest assured: Anonymous never forgets, and we'll respond in kind if we'll be able to help you. We have nothing today, and your help is all we can rely on.

To whom it may concern:

The People's Sovereign Republic of British Londinium would like to give aid to the Internets. We have designated the island of Tasmania, a Londinian overseas territory, to serve as home to whatever servers you choose to build. Security will be handled on your behalf by the Australian Colonial Police and by the Proconsul of Australia.

Dear brethren, worry not, we have the answers to your queries,

To solve your economic problems, a group of corporate and government economicists have forwarded several suggestios. Number one, they suggest you offer your webcrafting skills for hire to those that will pay. Number two, they suggest you create pay to play online games. Also, their third recommendation is to allow corporations to advertise for a suitable price on your pages. Lastly, they suggest the creation of... a photography industry. To help you jumpstart your economy, we are loaning fifty billion Universal Standard Dollars to you with a very low interest.

Meanwhile, concerning your territorial requests, we can rent some of the small isles in our nation to you for the use of your servers. What's more, we'll even let you have the first ten years free.

Finally, your military requests. We can protect your nation, with a simple promise from you. Your nation will become a Protectorate of the Free Empire, which will give you full protection. In return, you will pay us 1% of your governmental budget a year, starting in ten years when your economy will have developed a bit. We hope you accept.

While we appreciate your offer and might reconsider it later, it has to be noted that the Internet formed into a nation largely to gain actual independence. The position of a protectorate doesn't offer enough confidence of sovereignty, and we'd better avoid entering binding agreements by now, especially as there's nobody in sufficient legal power to enter them yet. We might reconsider the offer later, but now the Internets are neither able nor fully compelled to accept it.

[ P.S. OOC: Don't forget it's hardly even a nation yet. It's just users randomly spread all around the world, who decided to build the Internet nation, ensuring freedom from oppressive laws and safety from libel, DMCA, and other anti-free-speech legislations of various lands. Eventually, it will become more, will have many of own stuff, but that will take long development and self-realization.

It's also not known how the future of the Interwebs will go. It might dissociate into goatOS running wild anarchy, h4xing freelance, spreading shock worms, trolling and raiding. It might slide down to Windoze-infested hellish capitalism with amazons, hotels, paid pr0n sites and copyvio persecution. It can become a Linux-ruled open-source creative commies paradise thriving with wikis, fan communities and freeware. Or it might turn into something else, and that depends on the actions of various forces in the international community. ]

I, King Tirus of Delkor, would welcome the people of the Internets. Delkor lacks behind most other countries in computer technology, and would greatly benefit from having the Internets relocate to it's cities. You would be able to get jobs setting up IT companies, training Delkorians, and supporting the Imperial Military. The Imperial Government would provide salaries and benefits until new companies get moving. This is a great opportunity for the people of the Internets to prove themselves. The Internets do not have to become citizens of Delkor, but would be treated with the respect of full citizens, and would be under the Imperial Military's protection. You would also remain an independent nation. I hope you choose to make my Kingdom you new home, and would welcome you with open arms.

Dear Internetz People,

We have a valued sized piece of unused land in which only Anagonian Military Installations reside. We therefore offer this land to you. All we ask is that our Military Installations remain to provide a secure military presence and offer free military experience for your fledgling Militia's.

This is surely a good offer, and I'm confident that many of the more adventurous Internet citizens will gladly move into your nation, as long as they get better place than mostly rooms and basements they have now. Keep in mind that they mostly lack social skills, so it will be up to you to provide them transportation and assistance in the initial adaptation. However, what the people of the Internets lack in social skills, they more than compensate for by their technological aptitude.

Since the Internets support dual citizenship, it would be better for the people to get the citizenship of your nation. On behalf of our nation, I would also ask you to help us financially, so we can also start datacenters and companied of our own, in the land we recently received.

That's a great offer, which we'll surely take. The Interwebs Memex Ministry will call for the integration of people from our nation into your territories, assuming the resources to develop them will be also available. The creation of ultra-broadband fiber optics links, satellite communications, and lots of server capacity will surely benefit both Anagonia and the Interweb.

As our assistance would certainly also concern military technology, we'd be grateful if you assist with military protection of our people and assets in case they get attacked for some reason (likely related to our unrestricted free speech). On our side, massive amounts of intelligence from all around the world will be available to you.

The Anonymous economy geeks are certainly considering the suggestions, and we're likely to do a lot of that and more in the future, when and if it becomes possible to organize our users. Thankfully to the help of British Londinium, Delkor and Anagonia, our territorial needs are solved now; and, as for other offers, we're not sure about them yet.

I welcome all of the Internets who choose to move to my Kingdom. They will be treated with the respect of my own people, will have access to our excellent rail system, and will have the opportunity to build their lives creating a computer industry in Delkor. Official Decleration from the United Republic of Anagonia

Dear Interwebz,

I was alerted of your situation and signed a decleration that the Province of Sythonia, our base Military Province, would be offered to you in good faith. Through our private communications it has been made clear that you desire the growth and protection of your nation. Therefore, I have declared through the Republic Congress that Interwebz authority extends throughout Sythonia and, accordingly, the name of the Province could easily be changed to fit your needs.

My Military Chief, Chief General Oscar Vladinchi, has personally overseen Sythonia's military might to assist in your peoples transfer to the province. How many come is up to you, but our military assets are now at your disposal. High General Richard Godfrey will therefore be your Chief Advisor in all military and Provisional affairs. Accordingly, the High General will answer to your leaders chosen and will assist in the best way he can with the Republic Engineer's and Construction to help in the growth of future cities and towns.

All your needs will be met. The Republic Congress has passed Order Six-Six, Decleration Zero-Five-Two, which basically states all economic, military, and political powers and assests will go to assist you in your time of construction and prosperity. The Republic of Anagonia will loan you freely, without expectations of payment, as much Universal Standard Dollars as you need to compete in the World Economy.

It is an honor to assist your people. If you should have any further needs, feel free to contact Chief Governor Dunan Ruu or, if urgent, me.

Fordreich has been increasing its industrial and agricultural capacities to provide for Fordreich's growing population and economy. While we are not yet a powerful nation or have any position in the international community, we do have power to some basic extents. It is regretful that we cannot spare any money from our treasury at the time being, as we are heavily investing money into the developement of the Fordreich military, but we are willing to provide jobs for your population to work for/at. Jobs offered will vary according to the education level of the people, and can range from laborer to doctors to lawyers to employee of a company. All money that is produced by the workers at Fordreich will be calculated, then sent to your order with $10 interest value. As your country allows dual citizenship, we will be glad to offer the people coming to work at Fordreich citizenship and a county dedicated solely for your citizens' welfare. Will this be satisfactory?

The core of Internet will start development as soon as we can arrive. With combination of your capabilities and our plans awaiting implementation, Sythonia will truly turn into the Digital Valley, where the resources of the Internets will finally find application. We'll address the detail in the future, which is sure to be promising.

This offer is appreciated, but we are worried with the rumors going on about your limited civil, economic and political rights. Of course, every idea has its supporters on the Internet, so, while not of particular appeal to most, we'll make sure people supporting your government style learn of the option. As we don't exercise power over each other, the incomes should be left to everyone's own discretion.

While, certainly, having own merits, this life style is to my knowledge not the most appealing to the largely liberal population of the Internet. As mentioned, the Internet has supporters of all ideas and positions, so among the millions of Interwebz citizens and billions of people on the net, some will surely take your offer. Remember that being a citizen of the Internet is, while addictive, a voluntary and non-binding commitment, so even I don't hold significant power over the citizens, leaving the choice theirs to make.

Gurguvungunit City

It has been many years since the Gurguvii Foreign Ministry last awoke from its ancient slumber. Lights flickered, fans began to hum softly. The great mainframes shuddered to life and the Autonomous Personality Pods undocked from their stations in a shower of dust.

Gurguvungunit had once been a nation of men and women. Throngs of people moved to and fro, eating and sleeping and working their hours away. No longer. Gurguviis, faced with rampant famine, water shortages and overcrowding, voted one day to upload their memories and personalities into The Mainframe, and become a nation of mind. Over the next decade, the vast and slowly starving nation built for itself an enormous memory storage device into which its citizenry put their very souls. In this state, the nation had existed for a hundred years, its farms and vast residential wastelands turned into wind farms, solar arrays and hydroelectric dams. Personalities interacted via crude robotic units designed to contain a single mind, so as to interface with the physical world.

Miraculous discoveries were made. The code of the human mind was studied and eventually replicated. The population of Gurguvungunit began to grow again, not through crude biological reproduction but rather through the elegance of digital language. Minds could transmit ideas without the barrier of words. The nation entered a golden age.

But soon, it became clear that for all their productivity, the metamind of Gurguvungunit had nothing left to create. International struggles did not concern them, and despite the comfort of eight billion minds thinking and working as one, the Gurguvii felt alone. And so they slept, in the hopes that one day soon, another nation would join in their timeless song. The metamind would surface from time to time, analyze world events, ascertain that no other nation had done as they had, and then they would sleep again.

Until one day, the metamind awoke and found... Anonymous. They were not entirely the same, had not yet sublimated fully into the digital realm. But they had done something very near to it, created a nation out of the internet. The metamind celebrated, and began attempts to communicate with the Internet. They found that they were unable, however, to interact as one mind with this entire, disparate nation, and so returned to their own Mainframe to code once again. They produced a new mind and named her Galatea, after the living statue of ancient myth. They built her a body, of latex skin and steel frame, and they sent her forth into the world, the strange tangle of Gurguvii streets long untrodden by human feet.

Mr. President,

You might do best to consider me an ambassador. Perhaps you've heard of my native land, one Gurguvungunit. Perhaps not. I wouldn't really blame you, if you hadn't. We're a land of machines, and we've been sleeping for some time.

In this sense, perhaps you and we are not so different. Your citizens are bound together only by the intangibles of digital connections, we Gurguvii are almost exclusively digital in form. One particular side-effect of our chosen condition is that we have a great deal of server space, which we would happily donate to your nation. In exchange, we desire... companionship. It is terribly boring, living for a hundred years with the same minds all around, privy to your thoughts and desires. We want to speak with new minds, and so we have come to you. Speak with us, from time to time, and we will donate to you servers and bandwidth if necessary.

And perhaps you will someday choose to enter our world. Perhaps you will one day choose to become beings of light and join in our ancient song. Give us an email if you ever do, we always check our inbox.

Regards, Galatea

OOC2: I don't usually post as Gurguvungunit anymore, I honestly wouldn't expect a long running diplomatic thing. But I had fun typing it.

[ OOC: So, why not join in a common networked world? Your nation is like one step deeper than ours into the Net... ]

It's of great interest to meet the ambassador of Gurguvungunit, the nation known in the Internet legends. As the archives tell, our meeting was prophesied by the Usenet Oracle long ago (unless someone tampered with the datestamp).

And, as well as me, the entirety of our nation will be clearly interested in cultural integration with you. Internet has a constant influx of new people, creating the entire world of its own on the /b/oards. We hope that through this network, our people can wander the digital lands of Internet together. As far as possible, we'll broaden the connection with you, and your people are as welcome to join our boards.

OOC: Because I never post as Gurguvungunit, ever. I'm doing A Modern World, and I'm having much more fun being the British Empire there.

OOC: I meant purely IC, of course, w/o RPing it beyond simple agreement - just consider the network unified.
