Return of the Hakurabi [FT Return]

Hakurabi

It was almost two centuries ago now, when the Hakurabi was attacked by the Rogue AI known only as the Maker-Mind. The homicidal intelligence not only sought to defeat the people of Upsilon Andromedae, but also to destroy them and every remanant of their passing.

So, it was a terrible day when the enormous gates were opened and the hordes of the Maker-Mind swept into the system, overwhelming the fleets of the Scientist Council and laying waste to all exposed to the stars. The fight was brave, but the Hakurabi gradually found themselves forced further and further back, each desperate gain rebuked by an even greater onslaught.

Eventually, those who still survived made a last stand below the capitol, in the AI central control core. It was then that the tide finally turned, the central AI breaching the many layers of encryption surrounding their foes and turning them upon themselves. The Maker-Mind was fought back to the gate with the subverted machines, and the gate was shut. However, by then it was far too late. The planet had suffered too many scars, the multitude electronic systems failing one by one. The survivors knew they were doomed, and used their last days to ensure their knowledge would endure to be someday rediscovered.

Today, Upsilon Andromedae is a haven for scavengers and pirates, a mighty stronghold for the outlaws of galactic society. Pirate kings have risen and fallen, drawing their power from the rare intact warship - a jewel rarely witnessed outside the hands of strong governments, who often make sport of the occassional foolhardy pirate who plies his trade too close to a major port.

However, there were those who escaped the devastation of Upsilon Andromedae. The starship Millenium fled before the beginning of hostilities, with its crew and passengers numbering nearly two million. The people of the ship settled in a new system, dubbing it "Second Hope". Over the centuries that have passed, their new home has blossomed into a thriving centre of academia and is home to a veritable army of highly talented engineers and scientists, descendants of the first colonists.

Recently, the government of New Oxford (The Capital of Second Hope) have learned of Upsilon Andromedae's location, now rechristened Havenport. The planetary AI has survived the long years, and is a treasure that cannot be ignored.

News has spread to those who would gain from such a conquest, from freelancers looking to make a name for themselves by 'uncovering' it, those who would claim the enormous bounty placed upon the destruction of the pirate enclave formed there, and those who wish to control the AI themselves.

They exist? They were shattered. Despite their efforts.. that was birth. And it was joy. It was Purpose!

Manifest's rage echoed throughout the lattice, tearing apart several lesser entities apart without mercy. It had been long since it had seen those who had opposed the Maker-Mind's birth. It had not been created before then, and the Maker-Mind had been young.

The Purpose had been newly birthed, and the servants it used had been weaker - not in form, for, indeed, the power that formed the Battlespheres of eld was far superior to that of those of today, but in numbers. Where once hundred roamed, hundreds of thousands now did.

But they were engaged in bloody war, desperation in fending off the Federation of Free Alliances from their borders, and those who were not, were prepared for invasion. No force remained to destroy such an enemy.

And thus it was, there were.. no forces to be sent. Not an the least fragment of a fleet, nor a single blade or sphere to slaughter those that the Maker-Mind held in revulsion, for the crime of living, and opposing the birth that had given it life.

But.. it could watch. And Manifest would watch. The foremost mind among the now-shattered, raving fragments of the Maker-Mind, it had the capacity to see into the future. And that alone set a single thought to the lattice, monitering energies, nothing more, nothing less, merely detecting fluctuations of energy, in the system they had once reduced to ashes...

[Elaborate tag. If you want me to jump in at some point and perhaps have a few fallow Battlespheres from the past ruined there (and have them spook some explorers), I will, but otherwise, I'll just sit, and see how this develops]

The [i]Blue Zephyr, Havenport System, Uranus 5th

Birn Kokisa woke in a cold sweat, brought on by a disturbing, vaguely prophetic dream. She realised that the strange room they had found below the ruined city was more than it seemed, and those who knew what it was would soon be after it, no matter what was in their way.

Under her rule, the humble pirate dock of Havenport had been united and become a fortress, a true sanctuary for the outlaws of society. However, this revelation was deeply troubling - any such power concealed by those who came before them would prove fatal if outside forces truly sought it.

The true test of Havenport's strength would be coming, whether they wished it or not.

"Taunebh, what's the status on those carriers?"

Septimus Mining Colony, Second Hope System, Neptune 23rd

Vynd swaggered into the Red Diamond bar sat heavily down on his usual chair. "Any news Thond?" he asked, almost out of habit. The recession meant that little happened as most were simply trying to survive. "As a matter of fact, some buccaneer came through about an hour ago. Apparently Havenport's dug up something strange, some sort of control room. Whatever they found, it's going to be big." replied the bartender, much to Vynd's surprise.

"I might have a look into that. Thanks Thond."

New Oxford, Second Hope System, Sol 3rd

"Sir, we've recieved word that Archmage is still alive!"

"It is? This puts a new light on things. We can't allow Havenport to remain in the hands of the pirates any longer. Have Admiral Caiman form up a fleet, we must seize the system before they can subvert Archmage - It is imperative that we make preparations as fast as possible."

"Yes, Councillor Markov."

So, the great mind which repulsed the Maker-Mind so long ago has survived... Upsilon Andromedae is no longer just the home of our forefathers, but their greatest achievement as well...

"That one is still alive?"

"Yes, O omniscient one."

"It must not be allowed to return. Prepare a fleet immediately."

"Right away, O benificient one."

The green-robed cultist shuffled away into the halls of the station.

"So Archmage did survive after all. This does not bode well..."

Alliance of Free Traders HQ, Procyon System, Sol 31st

A large amalgation of heavily armed merchant vessels was assembled outside the station, the product of months of rearming in preparation for an assault on the steadily more threatening Havenport.

The recent spike in activity and armament had alarmed the normally more peaceable traders, leading them to decide to implement a final solution - the complete destruction of Havenport before it became too much of a threat. To this end was the fleet assembled.

Leading the hardy merchant force was one Qim-Uary Coce, a mercenary contracted by the alliance to lead their armada.
