Liberated New Ireland was watching Platoon, a movie about Oliver Stone in the Vietnam War, and has asked me to do a Vietnam War RP.


I was thinking having this take place in the Ashau Valley, and RPing a United States 101st Airborne platoon.

I'll RP the VC, since I know noone else will want to, and though I love the US, and many of my relatives fought in that war, I'll take one for the team.

to get into a college. Frankly, he would've joined anyway, though. On his first tour, he was eager to serve his country. On this, his second tour, he's just in 'Nam because it's what he knows. Looks out for the men in his squad, and in the platoon at large. Is vengeful against the NLF, but respects them as an enemy, and usually refuses to take part in any attacks on civilians.

Bazookas were retired, they used LAW (Light Antitank Weapon) then ;)

It was effective against hidden bunkers in the jungle.

Oh, and a bazooka actually refers to a specific weapon, but it eventually became a euphemism for RPG. Maybe because of the GI Joe's

yeah. Lots cheaper to make too. Instead of every platoon having just one, now every squad had one or two. Though most people just got rid of them, since they were just extra weight, and rarely used.

Just for refrence, Hueys can carry 14 troops or some odd number of stretchers.

Speaking of stretchers, we could use a medic as well.

When shall we begin?

I think we should give it a day considering the amount of people we want. Also, if we don't get enough, twe can use NPCs and the squad leaders can role-play them, or people can double up. Also, I think if your person gets killed or wounded to where they can't fight, you just create a new player and RP him as the replacement. If I die, as Platoon Leader, then the Staff Sergent gets a promotion and he chooses a new Staff Sergent. Basically, I think the senior officer should choose the new positions should an officer or NCO die. Just like IRL :)

Thats cool, I'm glad you decided to join :) I don't know as much as I could or as much as I know about WWII, but this should be fun.

If I counted right we have 6 of 35 players XD I hope we can at least get 10-15, although it's tough to get poeple to stay and RP. I'm thinking of inviting people from another military forum I hang around on. So have them make a quick nation, then join up the RP.

Isa, one thing. I don't think a machine gunner would be a Squad Leader (Sergeant), and if he's not a Sergeant the most he can be is a Corporal, and then his assistant isn't going to be a corporal too.

blade likes the m60 then the m16 and he been in nam from the start and would have use the m14 at the start of the war so he likes the big round

As for Jungle fighting, I'm already planning it. Defense of Base is the Battle of Fire Base Ripcord, which was huge, and non combat is required too. Nothing like screwin around on a base, five minute breaks, and ambushes with no results....

Then, after thoroughly humouring each other, we get an operation which i'll come up with then move out. This is how I plan the RP to go for awhile. Run and op, RTB. Hang at the EC, then go on another Op. Eventually, we'll have the Battle of Fire Base Ripcord, and all hell will break loose.

We're moving ten miles northeast to a ville suspected of being with the Viet Cong (it is). Its in the middle of the jungle, and there are about fifty people there. They live in standard indigenous hooches, made of sticks.

Yeah, it was looser, but there were still squads and each squad member moved with their squad, and set up fox holes and defensive positions with their squad. It really depended on the division, and the Platoon leader. The 101 was all volunteer, so they were more regimented then say the 57th Infantry which was all conscripts.

not all were volunteer soldiers, you volunteered to go airborne. And besides, the 101 was just as miserable and discontented about the war as a draftee unit. Watch Hamburger Hill.

I think you should copypaste all the characters (and the IC thread link, plus the roster) to the first post to make it easier to read, instead of everyone having to search the thread page by page all the time.

And yeah, the standard: Which squad is my char in? And also if someone wonders about the weapons, Remington 870:s were issued in small numbers to the GI:s and it was not so uncommon that one would've been sent by the family. And Bill's revolver is his own which he took with him to the Nam.

Well during 1914, yes. But once 1915 came around new tactics were coming around. It's not really old tactics against new machines. It was new unproven tactics never before used against new technology, and they needed to be changed.

Same as the US Civil War. IN truth they weren't fighting like Napoleon. Well not Napoleon who fought at Waterloo. They were tactics from Napoleon the III in the 1840's. New untested tactics against modern technology. That's what caused the massive casualties.

Only the Marines were that well organized. They operated that small, but they were volunteers and much better disciplined. Army struggled to hold Platoons together.
