Economy
Overview: Panaxia has an average economy comparable to that of many rapidly expanding former Soviet Union countries. Throughout its history, Panaxia has a proud tradition of balancing the economic weaknesses of a socialist agenda with the monetary benefits of capitalist principles. In recent events however, Panaxia is experiencing a minor recession due to the (largely symbolic) outlawing of capitalism. In the wake of the possible end of the economic Golden Age, Panaxian economic advisors are considering the possibilities of additional restructuring and the creation of free trade zones.

History
The Democratic Socialist Union of Panaxia is the result of hundreds of years of cultural assimilation. The lands which now comprise Panaxia were once inhabited by hundreds of isolated agricultural tribes. The primary ruling groups were the Balamine and Ribosian in the east, the Esterian peoples on the central islands, and the Pectinites of the west. However, the story of Panaxia as we know it begins with the Cyanacon people of the northwestern island. Like the Romans conquered militarily, the Cyanacon conquered through culture. Instead of invading and enslaving the peoples of foreign lands, the Cyanacon amazed, impressed and educated the peoples to their west and south.
For hundreds of years, Panaxia (then the Kingdom of Cyanaco) was a loose conglomeration of smaller kingdoms, headed up by the Cyanacon family in Cyanaco. As is typical of monarchies, royal jealousy was its bane. In the 1960s, as Panaxia entered its fifth century of existence, turmoil rocked the country for the first time. King Prizzle VII passed away, leaving his twin sons, Panax and Contra to rule. Panax believed he had birth right to the throne, having been born three seconds before Contra. Naturally, this infuriated Contra, who was routinely taunted during his childhood for his being second born. For a time, the two tried to rule cooperatively.
In 1969, Contra claimed control of the northern lands of the Cyanacon Kingdom and propelled the Kingdom into a civil war that lasted until the autumn of 1984. Panax's chief advisor, Arion Salazar, "the Great Negotiator," finally convinced the brothers to agree to a ceasefire and truce. Panax relinquished control of the northern lands to Contra, creating the eyesore we now call Contrapositive. While the two countries largely exist in silent hatred of one another, the Cyanacon island of the brothers' birthplace remains a point of violent debate. Panaxia has gained control of nearly half, including the city of Cyanacon. However, the land to the north and west is one of the most unsafe places in all of Central York, comparable to the West Bank or Gaza in the Middle East.
Exhausted by a civil war that led to the division of his former kingdom, ashamed of his inability to unite the country, and amid some drunken ranting with his trusted advisors, Panax vowed to restore his part of the country to its former cultural prominence. In one final act of selfishness, he renamed the country Panaxia, before sparking the socialist revolution that has led Panaxia to its greatness. Largely influenced by Marx and Castro, as well as the democracies of the Ancient Greeks and the United States, Panax hoped to fuse the models of Socialism and Democracy to create the nearly impossible. Amid the confusion of that first decade, Panaxia lost many of its elderly "traditionalists" when they defected to Contrapositive. Nonetheless, this fueled the youthful movement necessary for a successful revolution. Out of this revolution came many of the men who have remained in power as the situation mellows. "Prince" Panax was elected as the first Counselor of Panaxia in 1995. Since then, Panaxia has had three men serve as Counselor. Panax remains as a figurehead and celebrity in the country.
Military
Overview: Panaxia is a largely pacifist country; since the Cyanacon Civil War, there has not been much need or want for an overwhelming military force. Nevertheless, Panaxia does have armed forces which will be detailed shortly. Military service in Panaxia is strictly voluntary, but Panaxian boot camps and training are notoriously lengthy and difficult. Despite the small defensive force, Panaxia's Internal Peacekeeping Corps is world-renowned and is a highly effective extension of the government. The IPC, as the name implies, deals purely with internal affairs and defends the rights of any and all Panaxian citizens by any means necessary.
Branches of the defensive forces
Ducks: The largest branch of the Panaxian Defense Forces is called the Ducks. They are some of the most rigorously trained soldiers in the region; however the subject of their training is questionable. They receive daily swimming lessons, are taught common parachuting techniques five times a week and are well trained to run like hell. Anyone enlisting in the military is automatically assigned to the Ducks. Admission into the more specialized branches of the PANG and PCG is highly competitive and is only possible after one year's service in the Ducks. The Ducks are best noted for their ability to avoid conflict and escape from the enemy. It may even be a stretch to state that the Ducks are stealthy, since they're never in a conflict. Nevertheless, as the Ducks' slogan states, they're "always ready for nothing!"
Air National Guard: The Panaxian Air National Guard is a tight-knit group of Panaxia's best pilots. Should the need ever arise, they all have learned which red button to push to launch the missiles and which one to drop the bombs. Even so, the PANG is more inclined to perform elaborate tricks and stunts at air shows and patriotic flybys at sporting events.
Coast Guard: The Panaxian Coast Guard is charged with protecting Panaxia's 9,000 miles of coastline. If Panaxia were to ever be engaged in a conflict, the PCG can double as transport for Ducks. Occasionally, the PCG stops the drug traffickers from around Central York who happen to be sailing through or into Panaxia to take inventory. At all other times, the PCG performs the routine tasks of helping immigrants swim to Panaxia's shores and making sure young Panxians don't swim too far off and into the floating ocean mines near the aquatic border with Contrapositive.
National Guard: The Panaxian National Guard is a catch-all for those poor souls of Panaxia who want to serve their fine country but can't swim well enough (or at all) to be members of the Ducks. In essence, their job is to push paper. The brightest of this slightly dumbed-down class are sometimes promoted to the IPC.
