"Sir, I understand your ire, but there's not a whole hell of a lot we can do about it!"

Munroe was getting frustrated. He hated to see a new, defenseless nation fall to the enslaving trap of collectivism as much as Karabekian, but still...

If only this had happened a few years later...

Rabo Karabekian, Head Reasoner of State of The Free Objectivist Republic of Tangled Up In Blue, gazed emptily at his Strategic Interpretive Adviser. The man was a genius, had a knack for figuring out precisely what every event meant for the physical and ideological security not just of the country, but of the entire world. And he was right--the first three regiments of the Defensive Force had not even begun training, and it would be years before the nation would be able to project force abroad...still, there had to be a way.

Karabekian just didn't know what it was yet.

Finally, he made eye contact with Munroe. "You're right, Leon...you're right, of course. Such a shame, though..."

"Sir, if we're done here, I've got a dentist appointment in an hour, and I'll need most of that to get there--it's across town, Dr. Alvin, and you know how traffic is on Lucille Street."

"Yeah, sure, go on...such a shame, such a shame."

After Munroe left, Karabekian leaned back and closed his eyes. He remembered several months ago, when the revolution had ended and the new government had been formed.

He knew then that the state needed a way to punish perpetrators of especially egregious socialist treachery even before the country's formal military could reach a respectable strength. Furthermore, this offensive force had to be covert and untraceable--it would be some time before the country could defend itself against any sizable assault on its borders. Then, it hit him.

Throughout the revolution, the Capitalist Force had benefitted from attacks on its enemies for which it was not responsible. For various reasons, there had been an official policy of non-interest in determining just who was responsible for these attacks. However, as it became clear that victory was inevitable, the leaders of the rebellion realized that such an organization, acting without restraint, could eventually prove to be more trouble than it was worth. So, as the Socialist Enemy was gasping for its last breaths, an investigation was launched. Though no contact was ever made, it was determined that the group responsible referred to itself as the World Capitalist Revolutionary Front, and had, on its own initiative, assisted in other capitalist revolutions around the world.

Though, for diplomatic reasons, the new state had to officially distance itself from the terrorist group, Head Reasoner of State-Designate Rabo Karabekian realized that nonetheless it could prove to be a useful ally in the worldwide War on Collectivism. So, shortly after he took office, he personally began an anonymous correspondence with the leader of the organization, culminating in an agreement that The Free Objectivist Republic of Tangled Up In Blue would specify targets for The World Capitalist Revolutionary Front's operations and provide the funding for those particular operations.

It was genius.

The way the government was structured, the Head Reasoner of State had total control over the budget, and could choose to publish it or not at his discretion. This enabled an unprecedented degree of security in the arrangement, as Karabekian was the only individual who knew of the government's funding of the Front--the Front did not even know who it was dealing with. Furthermore, the complete anonymity of the communications made it practically impossible to trace the direction or funding back to the government--the only one who knew was the one who started it in the first place, and Karabekian certainly trusted himself.

Karabekian coughed and returned from his revelry. He closed the door, then returned to his desk and took out a pad of paper and began writing.

As you know, Pythogria has recently made overtures towards Orezia that are clearly aimed at creating a new puppet state for its collectivist empire. It is imperative that you prevent this from happening. Towards this end, I am sending you approximately 19.5 million oons to fund this operation; this will come to you at your base in Mondoth from many directions. Included is a description of the precise nature of Pythogria's intentions as well as what intelligence we have. Choose your own targets, but keep in mind that the end is to remove Pythogria's capability to make Orezia dependent.

He stuffed the letter and the intelligence documents into a manila envelope, made the agreed-upon secret mark inside, and sealed it shut. On his way home he would drop it in the mail with his other correspondence. No one would suspect a thing.

Guy Noire entered the room and dropped a letter on a table. "Well, we've got a request from our benefactor. Wants us to do a number on Pythogria. Doesn't care what specifically, as long as it serves his goal of, umm, 'removing Pythogria's capability to make Orezia dependent'."

Ronnie Hawkins looked up at him. "What...oh, that's right. I remember reading about that. How much's he paying us?"

"19.5 million oons".

"So he wants us to operate from here in Mondoth?"

"That's right, bud."

"Hmm...wanna wake everyone else up or wait until morning?"

"Bah...we'll wait. We've got plenty of time still."
