Because of limitless expansion into the stars, quite a large number of extrasolar planets with Earth-like conditions have been colonized, by one nation, by many nations, but, regardless, Earth is little but another planet in the galaxy now, it is no longer even the primary launch pad for colonization efforts.
However, the stress on the world governments is too much, and war breaks out, after years of insane free-for-all fighting 'twixt all the thousands of nations in the galaxy, five great alliances have been formed. Each named after an arm of the galaxy, they are all more than a thousand nations strong and are to fight a battle against the other four that has not been seen in all the history of mankind. Technology is at a level that nobody could have predicted, and the fighting machines that are made and wielded in space are of breathtaking size, scope, and power. Transportation is virtually instant across even the entire galaxy, and, now, great, almost limitless armies wait on the sidelines to wage the greatest war ever seen.
The five groups of nations are:
Cygnus Alliance
Perseus League
Empire of Orion
United Nations of Sagittarius
Crux-Centaurus Empire
The President of The Holy Republic of Vespucii, making a decision that is bound to cause dissent among the people, has joined the Great Galactic War, fighting on bhalf of the Empire of Orion.
Five Space Carriers built in and launched from the ports of Betulguese II, each carrying a hundred smaller fighters, are accompanied by three Dreadnoughts and ten Corvettes, a much smaller and less powerful battlecruiser than the Dreadnought, that nonetheless boasts powerfull engines and an exceptional subspace speed.
The small Vespucii fleet is bound for a great void near the galactic center, where an enormous space battle is to be waged 'twixt all five of the Glactic Alliances.
