Surprising news this afternoon as the desert Nation of North Terristan formally ceded itself to Roycelandia, agreeing to become part of the Roycelandian Empire.

The Ruling Sheik will stay on as Governor-General of the new Colony, but there will doubtless be a "period of adjustment" as North Terristan adjusts to Roycelandian rule- including the abolition of the Death Penalty and the granting of universal suffrage to everyone over 16.

"North Terristan has long been a poor nation, deprived of the quality of life that most other Nations enjoy, seemingly without effort" Sheik Bafar Usen said at the ceremony today. "The people of North Terristan have voted, and wish to become part of the Roycelandian Empire. There will be difficulties, but of all the people we could join, we feel the Roycelandians are the people best suited for the job."

When asked what caused them to choose Roycelandia, the Sheik replied "After the positive reports from the Bedou in Roycelandian East Africa, we have realised that the Roycelandians are only too happy to accept other religions, despite their officially atheist views and laws prohibiting the dissemation of religious teachings to persons not willing to receive them."

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Royce I attended the ceremony in person, thanking the Sheik in a few words of Arabic, and reading a speech in both English, and a translated phoenitic Arab copy as well.

"The people of Roycelandia welcome the North Terristanians into our Glorious Empire, and look forward to improving the quality of life for all of you. As Imperial Citizens, all of you- men and women alike- now have the right to move freely throughout the empire, to live and work where you please, follow your chosen religion (or lack thereof), vote, and all the other freedoms that come from living in a Democracy."

His Majesty's speech was greeted with cheers, and the ceremony went off flawlessly.

The Sheik's personal guards will remain in his service as the Desert Guard, a new branch of the IDF. The rest of the Army, Navy, and Airforce will be incorporated into the Imperial Defence Forces, with the resulting improvement in pay and equipment quality as a result.
