After a few years of R&D, and a price tag of 20 billion credits, a laser cannon was finally built by military scientists. It is ten meters long, and has a 360 degree swivel ability. It is a ten megawatt laser (just enough to punch through the atmosphere and into a missile; 5 second burn-through), and has already been tested to 85% efficiency. Powerplant: nuclear reactor.
A dummy ICBM launched towards a spot of empty ocean 1000 miles away, was intercepted and destroyed by the laser, with minimal problems. It is hoped that more can be built to accomodate all the cities and major towns, perhaps smaller ones to destroy Tomahawks or even fighters. The next stage in protection from ICBMs would be air-based, and space-based lasers to be built next year.
