Just an OOC reminder to everybody that a long time ago, back in 1967, the nation of Israel practically destroyed the amed forces of and came this close to occupying the nations of Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon. Israel had 2 1/2 million people; the aggressors had more than fifty million.

What's with the reminder, is it the anniversery or something? :)

I know the history of this war, and it is perhaps my favorite war of all time to study. The way the Israelis pulled this one out has to be perhaps one of the greatest military victorys in the history of mankind.

Nah, I just read a book about it, Fantastic Victory by W. Cleon Skousen. I saw the way he talked about this tiny nation (in NS it's impossible to have a nation that size) beating up on the Arabs and I couldn't help but think about the "you got here a week after I did so buzz off" mentality shown by many here.

It was VERY impressive. But the Israelis did make on big assed mistake:

USS Liberty.

Ring a bell?

Didn't think so.

Backstory:
The USS Liberty was a recon boat, loaded with state of the art monitoring equipment. Due to some error in Washington, the Liberty was 13 miles off the Israeli coast, instead of the planned 100. It came under attack by planes and boats maked as Israeli, and came very close to sinking. It limped back to its carrier fleet, and an enormous cover-up ensued. The Israelis maintain that they mistook the Liberty for a transport that was unseawothy, the "Gaia", i believe.

But it was a very neat war. Sorry about the "off on a tangent".

It wasnt a mistake its just that the Israelis executed 5,000 Egyptian POWs because they didnt have the logisitics to do anything with them and the damn Liberty just had to be their recording it. BTW commander of the Israeli army unit in question, if anyone's interested: Ariel Sharon.

Another good book, 'My Enemy's Enemy' by George Crile about the CIA in Afghanistan during the soviet invasion.

I actually think the biggest mistake they made was listening to the UN and stopping all their military operations without a major push into the middle east. The way they were moving- I don't think anyone nearby (with the exception of the Soviets who were too scared of the U.S. to intervene) would have been able to stop them.

Had they told the UN to f*ck off and made that push, then we wouldn't have all this bloodshed and crisis over there today.

agreed especially considering that NAsser had told UNEF troops to f*ck off before the war.
