I would like your feedback and opinions on the following proposal.

Description: UN Resolution #19: Religious Tolerance (Category: Human Rights; Strength: Significant) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: The United Nations,

Understanding the importance of freedom of religion,

Understanding the importance of religious tolerance,

Opposing all wars fought in the name of gods and religion,

Noting that religions in themselves can be intolerant of, and sometimes hostile towards, other religions and belief systems,

Noting that extremist religions are the primary and often sole cause of holy wars,

And noting that the promotion of ones religious beliefs can result in the destruction of other cultures,

Concludes that religions and belief systems, in certain cases, should not be tolerated,

And chooses to repeal Resolution #19,

On the grounds that governments should not be forced to support and promote tolerance of religions that

A) preach hostility and intolerance towards others,

B) start or attempt to start holy wars, and/or

C) force or attempt to force their beliefs on others.

Approvals: 0

Status: Lacking Support (requires 112 more approvals)

Voting Ends: Thu Dec 27 2007

Best to submit your draft after everyone had a look on the Jolt Forum.

Whereas,
Freedom of Religion does not exist
in all countries in the world.
Whereas,
Too many wars are started and fought
because of religious differences.
Whereas,
There is a need for more religious
tolerance on Earth.

Therefore be it resolved that the United
Nations support and promote a greater understanding
of all religions and promote more tolerance of
differences of religion.
Be it further resolved that the United Nations oppose
all wars fought in the name of God and religion.

As much as we may or may not be interested, you must realize all this resolution DOES is state that the UN supports 'tolerance of religion' and that it opposes all wars fought in the name of God or religion.

That's it. Doesn't compel National Governments to do...well...anything. So, hm, we might be in support of a repeal, if only to replace it with something stronger.

And the idea about not tolerating religion promoting violence...well, that leads to a problem. You see, according to the Eon Convention, killing off or harming anyone who believe in a religion (wheter or not they condones violence is irrevelant) is basically considered artibrary, and is therefore, genocide. It's not a conflict, as you don't have to tolerate them, but you have to let them go wherever they please, and you can't suppress them at all, otherwise you will be breaking international law anyway. And if you can't suppress those religious groups, well, it's almost like 'tolerance', is it not?

Plus, it's not just religious groups that call for violence. Ideologies call for violence too or try to force their political system on other people, you know. Why not just make a resolution condemning this sort of thing rather than just only harm religions and leave those capitalists alone, letting them spread their spiteful lies.

Besides, we HAVE to tolerate many nationstates in the world who promote violence, partly because they would attack us if we don't, and partly because of the fact that I, as a Terranist, promote violence too.

Anyone that want to kill us, we have to attack back and kill them. Self-defense, really. We are hostile towards those that wish to kill us. By your logic, "our belief in self-defense and hostility towards anyone wanting to murder us"="wrong".

And nobody wants to be called wrong.

Noting that extremist religions are the primary and often sole cause of holy wars,We have found this to not be true as no single religion believes in war, just a segment of that group which happens to be the loudest part of the full group. Look at the voting here and consider the numbers that actualy vote on the polices the NSUN run by.. You will find it a small number compared to the full membership of the UN. Thus if at some point that small voting membership should choose to pass some resolution turning the NSUN it an extremist group does that mean the majority is extremist? We say no as probably the majority should they become aware of the issue be against it. Thus with religious groups, only a small number in most of them are heard and as society is prone more toward voilence they draw to it and that is the small group among a gentle majority... so do we want to condemn the majority for the small part of it that are extremist.

We should as one has mentioned not be looking at just religions here but all forms of groups that are united in causes wars or any hostile actions against anyone.

OOC: Are you indicating here the Church of England was an extremist religion, were they not involved in wars to promote religion. And is some part of that or offshoot of it still not involved today in what many might call a religious war.. or even if not it still war.

Finally...I was beginning to think this would never happen....i find Holy wars extremely Ironic...How would one preaching peace and goodwill to all expect their message to reach the masses with war and violence...The death of Innocents is not acceptable for there are no winners in war...Only victims....I vote yes to repeal Religious tolerance

But the resolution itself condemns religious wars! There is no point to repealing it except for the fact the resolution is a blocker stopping more stronger forms of enforced tolerance.

The argument is void: Resolution #19 doesn't prohibit your government from refusing to tolerate certain religions and belief systems. Other resolutions, arguably, might; but not this one. Phew, no need for a repeal!
