Euthanasia for Depression?

16-01-2004, 04:02
Many people seem to believe in euthanasia for those with terminal illnesses. What this bill would have you believe, is that this is the best possible solution to their suffering.

What it does not address, however, is that many of these people suffer from depression. They feel their mortal life ending, and cannot but feel robbed of the experiences that they could have had.

With proper treatment from a trusted psychologist, these people could live out their days content, instead of wallowing in a constant state of thinking, “what might have been” and “if only”.

These people need competent psychological help, and the love of their families, not euthanasia.

I think what the UN is deliberating on is life threating situations.
The kind of situations where someone gets an actual painfully slow terminal illness that of the physical nature (i.e. cancer or aids). I don't think that the UN is passing legislation suggesting that it is legal to allow medicinally aided suicide due to depression.

I think you're minsconstruing the nature of the Euthanasia Resolution a little bit. Yet at the same time, I really appreciate how you've presented the other side of this issue, bc if u notice the Description of the Resolution itself is completely one sided.

I do not think that the Legalize Euthanasia bill should be passed. Even though someone may wish to be dead at one point in time does not mean that they will always feel that way. For example, if someone has a terminal illness that has no known cure and wishes to be dead, but somehow pulls through, not only will we have saved a life by not passing this law, but medical research may be done on the patient to try to find a cure and save many more lives.
Also, for the problem of the boy killing his mother, that is not murder, as the bill implied, but is actually assisted suicide, and therefore the boy should not be put on trial for it.
